Post partum clothes

Hi ladies - I’m expecting my first baby in a couple of months time and I’m looking for some advice on what clothes i should be buying for the first couple of months post partum.

I’ve lived in summer dresses during my pregnancy but by the time baby is here we will be heading into Autumn so my current wardrobe won’t cut it !

I’m hoping to have a C-Section so I’m guessing I’ll need high waisted - also planning on breast feeding. Do you ladies have any tips please ? Dont want to spend a fortune but equally want to look vaguely decent especially when people come over to meet the baby!

Wide leg high waisted joggers/trousers
Gym leggings
Sweatshirts, jumpers
Oversized shirts
Vest tops under everything for breastfeeding, then you can just pull your top up and the vest top down, with the baby in front basically nothing is on show. I’m still breastfeeding at 13 months and can wear most of my ‘normal’ clothes as long as I do this.

Vinted is your friend for the first few months! I bought a size up of the stuff mentioned above. I was very swollen for a few weeks and my scar was tender. Im actually a bit smaller than pre pregnancy now one year on, I think thanks to breastfeeding (you burn so many calories making milk!), and I had to go dairy free for a bit due to my son having suspected allergies. So you do go back down- don’t panic!

Have a look at Beyond Nine, @Bride2Be25.

And then maybe see if you can find their things pre-owned, if you don’t want to pay full price. They do have a sale on at the moment, though.

I've seen new look and next have quite a few loose knitted dresses with a "flap" to lift for breast feeding. That might work well if you're a dress person?

I'm imagining there will be some jumper dress style versions around too towards the end of summer. Seraphine currently has some, but they are £££

H+m do these incredibly soft post c section leggings. I lived in them for the first few weeks. Highly recommend

High waisted leggings!

Lovall maternity leggings and Seraphine jersey joggers saw me through the first week or two. Then the Seraphine post partum jeans were perfect. They have a sort of soft space waist which holds you and isn’t sore in your scar.

I'd say don't buy anything much (if possible) until a couple of weeks after the birth. I found I couldn't wear my maternity clothes after the first week or two as they were too baggy in the wrong places and made me feel much bigger than I was. My boobs stayed big because of feeding so some of my pre pregnancy fitted tops were no good but personally I don't like the specific nursing clothes, I found they hung oddly and I didn't like the visible flaps even if the actual garment was ok. You also won't know exactly where your scar is or how long it will take to feel comfortable so some things might be fine but others not.

I favoured dresses and tops with buttons/zips or a looser knit/top with a vest underneath so that one could be pulled up the other down. I didn't wear dresses without buttons or a very stretchy v neck or zip neckline for ages, until I could leave baby without feeding for several hours.

Trousers with drawstrings could be an option if you don't love leggings/stretchy waists or knitted/stretchy skirts if you prefer those.

Depending on where you live, if your summer dresses have a button front you might get some wear out of them with tights/boots and a jumper if your winter is mildish.

I'm thinking about this too as DC2 is due end of October and DD was born similar time but we had the 2020 lockdown and no other children so I didn't have to think about leaving the house much or being decent for visitors for a few months.

I just wore my maternity clothes / leggings for the first 6 weeks then my normal clothes fit again. Like a PP I found 'breastfeeding' tops really uncomfortable so button up shirts etc were better for me.
Make sure you have high waisted pants as regular pants sit right on where your C section scar will be and it's uncomfortable. I'm 18 months on and still wearing the giant pants!
