Winter footwear for 18 year old girl

Notahelicoptermumsupporter · 24/07/2024 05:20

We currently live in a warm climate but my daughter will be going to university in September. She has never lived in the UK before so has never had the need to wear winter shoes.
What do young people tend to wear on a daily basis? She thinks she will be ok in her Air force ones whereas I don’t and think she will need some thing more substantial. We have reached a stalemate. Any ideas or advice please? Links would be especially welcome . (She doesn’t like Doc Martins btw ).

Air forces are good all year round. Students wear whatever they fancy so don’t stress…She’ll need a pair of winter boots - ASOS are reasonable my DD has various versions of these style (I know she doesn’t like DM’s but these are dressier ) lots of price points for this style.

I’d suggest she buys a cheap pair of wellies in case it snows. Plus a formal pair of shoes if she’s going to do dinners/work experience etc. if she’s taking on a waitressing job, a pair of ballet flats or similar would be sensible.

set her up with an ASOS account with a one-off delivery fee for the year. She’ll be able to get what she needs quickly and they offer a student discount.

Air Force 1s are perfect and are solid leather shoes Smile.

My teen girls have lived in them and converse high tops. It's all they'll wear.

We live in Scotland and teens wear converse high tops or chunky white trainers like AF1, New Balance or Air Max. If I bought them anything else they wouldn't get worn!

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 24/07/2024 06:11

@Margesherwood I cannot imagine any teen voluntarily wearing wellies if it snowed!

Mine wear trainers all year round - the oldest has doc boots that she would wear if it snowed.

lol. We live in the country so mine does….

EasterlyDirections · 24/07/2024 06:17

Mine lives in trainers. She has walking boots for if it snows or is muddy (she has an outdoor hobby), a pair of black brogues for interviews etc and crocs. For her school prom she wore smart trainers.

Mumofyellows · 24/07/2024 06:24

Trainers! My daughter is at Uni in the north of England where it does snow in winter regularly and doesn't have winter boots. She has wellies for when she comes home (we have dogs and horses) but doesn't take them to uni. They even wear trainers on nights out. She has various including Air Force, New Balance, Converse high tops. ASOS is great, student discount and getting her the unlimited free delivery is a great shout. Me and my daughter use it a lot.

Let her work it out when she gets here

Peonies12 · 24/07/2024 06:28

Shes an adult woman - not a girl! If she needs new shoes once she gets to Uk she can order or go out and buy some herself 🤣

ApolloandDaphne · 24/07/2024 06:51

I live in a uni town on Scotland. Trainers are absolutely fine all year round and are worn by most students. If she gets here and finds she needs different shoes she can buy some.

NightBirdy · 24/07/2024 07:01

Trainers are pretty ubiquitous, but if she's old enough to go to uni in a different country to where her parents live, she's also old enough to work out what shoes suit the weather conditions where she is going. Live up to your user name and let her find her style and buy her own shoes when she gets here.

NellietheNumpty · 24/07/2024 07:24

What could be helpful is to think about socks. My DD and DN are both students in Scotland. They used fleece lined leggings and woolly socks in cold weather with trainers. DD also wears 2 pairs of tights especially when they have holes in to save throwing them.
Buy some merino socks and a give a shoe allowance of £100 for the Autumn term and let them figure it out would be my advice.

Decompressing2 · 24/07/2024 08:26

Honestly, there are shops in the uk - uni rooms can be tiny - much better for her to come and see what others are wearing and choose for herself.
I have 17 year old teens and when they go to uni next year they will just be taking trainers which is what they wear all year around.

Let her work it out when she gets here

Yes!

She'll then see what the others are wearing and know the best place to buy them.

longdistanceclaraclara · 24/07/2024 08:34

AF1s will be fine but surely she can figure it out for herself when she gets here anyway?

FionnulaTheCooler · 24/07/2024 08:36

Where in the UK is she going to be living?

CaMcC · 24/07/2024 08:38

Where do you live? I wouldn't say the average UK shop has a great range of winter boots - I didn't actually get a proper, fleece lined pair til I lived in Germany. I've needed them for a couple of weeks every winter for the last 3 years but otherwise thick wool socks and spring/autumn boots will work fine. Wellies rated to -20oC (like bogs) would probably cover more eventualities than a pair winter boots. Better traction too.

AndYesTheWeeDonkeys · 24/07/2024 08:46

We have reached a stalemate.

Oh, @NotahelicoptermumsupporterGrin You probably didn’t mean to be so unintentionally hilarious - but the idea of an 18 year old student having to take any notice of what their mother thinks of their footwear choices …

Obviously if you get on well she might share her shopping news with you - but once she’s here she’ll simply go with the prevailing fashion at her university.

BerwickBeak · 24/07/2024 08:59

Airforces are fine. My daughter also has timberlands and those most hideous of boots, UGGs. But they are a fashion choice rather than a weather-conscious one.

Notahelicoptermumsupporter · 24/07/2024 09:01

🤣 those of you telling me she’ll work it out when she’s there… you’re so right. I think I’m worrying too much and trying to be too prepared🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️ Thank you for all the advice though - I really appreciate it.

I don't think you can dictate what shoes your 18 year old wears.

I wouldn't tell my 14 year old.

AdultChildQuestion · 24/07/2024 09:06

Air Force 1s are fine. That's what pretty much everyone of that age wears most of the time. Or maybe they also have a pair of converse for a warmer day, or a pair of Adidas Spezials if they want a touch of colour.

mitogoshi · 24/07/2024 09:13

Leather trainers are fine for the first few weeks, but she's going to find her style once there. She'll need a formal outfit with appropriate shoes at some point usually, assuming she goes to these sorts of events. Unless it's the highlands of Scotland or agricultural college i wouldn't worry about winter boots, we got zero snow and only 3 (and not severe) frosts in our part of the uk last winter.

You're allowed to worry about her going off to university. A lifetime of being responsible for her health and welfare is hard to just switch off!

Comedycook · 24/07/2024 09:15

Going by the last few winters, they really haven't been particularly cold at all. Trainers are fine.
