Wool and colour query

I am trying to move towards a capsule wardrobe.

First question – I am puzzled by the whole concept of wool being cool when it’s warm and warm when it’s cold. It would be incredibly helpful if this was actually true. Is it true and what am I looking for? Am I looking for hundred percent wool clothing? I tend to run cold so I’m always more worried about feeling cold in my environment.

I presume the problem it’s going to be dry clean only, that could be a nuisance but there is one right by work.

Second question – One of the colours that I’d like to use is grey with a hint of pink in it. I see huge amounts of greige but I am not seeing that grey with pink. It used to be quite popular. I suppose you could flip it and say a pinkish grey colour. Has it gone totally out of fashion?

The only colour match I can find is paint! Sorry for the long link

Giving this a bump
Especially if anyone can help on the wool query. Office air-conditioning is very hard to navigate at this time of year.
Thank you.

Lots of wool can be machine washed or hand washed, no need for drt cleaning. I like cotton cashmere mixes in the summer.

WeRateSquirrels · 22/07/2024 16:33

I have several fine knit merino dresses which I wear for most of the year, with varying layers on top/underneath. I do find it too hot if the weather goes above about the mid twenties, so I'm dubious about the 'cool in summer' claims. It all gets machine washed on cold.

Also, merino is amazing for not needing washed very often at all.

RoundandSad · 22/07/2024 16:35

Oh, that’s good to know about the washing. And also the mid 20s temps. I haven’t bought clothes in ages so I’m a bit puzzled by the concept of a wool T-shirt. I tend to think of wool as being rather itchy but I don’t know if I’ve ever had anything made of merino.

It’s expensive, though, yes? If it lasts, I am happy with that. I can’t have anything clingy and synthetics in variably cling.

Merino lasts. Cashmere is variable, although I like Autograph at M and S for reasonably priced 100% cashmere. I find merino ok in summer but not cashmere.

RoundandSad · 22/07/2024 16:40

I don’t know What I was expecting because I have never spent much on clothes. But when I went into M&S, wasn’t impressed with the cashmere. Perhaps my expectations were too high. I thought it would feel very luxurious but it didn’t.

Wool can often be aired between wears instead of washing. You may wish to have it professionally cleaned every so often.
Merino wool is a good option - as a pp said you could layer more in colder weather. Wool is a natural fibre and I think it does let your body regulate it's temperature quite well (aka breathing). Some people are allergic to pure wool/lambs wool (not Merino) so make sure that's not the case with you before you buy loads!

Was it definitely actually Cashmere and not 'Cashmere effect'?

RoundandSad · 22/07/2024 21:47

Yes, I’m 99% sure.

All my summer t-shirts and tanks and almost all my Summer dresses are merino, mainly from here: www.icebreaker.com. I only buy in the sale, as they are expensive, but last for years. I also have winter trousers, long sleeved tops, winter dresses and hoodies. Yes, it is true, they are great in summer for keeping cool and being able to wear multiple dsys without smelling and warm in winter. I wear thick knitted wool or cashmere jumpers in winter too as wear the merino as a base layer. I even have merino bras. The only real exception to my wool wardrobe is cotton/linen trousers for summer.

RaininSummer · 23/07/2024 07:42

My wool jumpers only get washed once over the winter unless I spill something as airing is enough. I dont think wool is particularly cool in the summer though. I go to cotton and layers then.
