Lacking inspo!

Going to Edinburgh in Sept with DH (never been!).
Typical city break plans, shopping, eating, drinking, general wandering.

I’m mainly keen for night out outfit ideas, I am 36 (with a younger style I think), size 18. Mainly wear dresses, and like to cover my arms.
Will likely wear converse or DMs on my feet.

Would love to hear/see your suggestions.

With the exception of the likes of the dining rooms at The Waldorf Astoria or Prestonfield House Edinburgh isn't a dressy city or different from any other major European tourist city. Wear what you'd wear on any other city break

Lj8893 · 22/07/2024 19:14

Oh yes I didn’t mean what dress code. Just lacking inspiration!

What would you wear on any other city break?

Or here's links to a few good independent shops. I have stuff from all of these except Epitome and Pie in the Sky

I would normally wear some sort of dress and DMs/Converse and some sort of jacket (unless warm) for a night out.

I am struggling to find any nice dresses at the moment. Will have a look at your suggestions, thankyou.

Probably should have put a budget up! I wouldn’t usually spend more than £50 on a dress.

Converse/DMs definitely a good idea - Edinburgh has lots of hills and cobbles

Absolutely. I don’t do heels anyway!

That’s lovely, and definitely something I would wear daytime/for work. A bit too casual for a night out though. Have put it in my basket for a new work dress though!

Oh they have sold out in my size!

What are you expecting to do in Edinburgh that that dress is too casual?

I mean for a night out, I live in dresses very similar to that (it is lovely) for daytime wear and work.
For a night out I would wear something a little more glam, maybe shorter or more fitted (although not bodycon!).

My favourite night out dress has sadly had its day but for an example, it’s a dark green mini tea-style dress with a lovely floral print from Oliver Bonas. I have worn it in the day too, but it’s lovely with DMs and jewellery in the evening.

I mean no disrespect to the dress, it’s gorgeous and I wish they had my size, but it’s very much a daytime dress for me, maybe because of the length?

This is similar to the dress I described but a different pattern and colour. Sadly this isn’t available in my size either!
But something like with DMs or I even like the cowboy boot style she is wearing is something I would usually wear for a night out. Dressed up with jewellery, hair and make up etc.

I love this that keeps coming up on my Facebook feed, but I don’t know much about the company in terms of quality etc and another one without my size available!

Edinburgh isn't a particularly dressy city so you really can wear whatever you want. If you want to dress up you can too.

Lj8893 · 30/07/2024 20:22

I think I shouldn’t have said where I was going 😂
I just want some inspiration and ideas for a dress for a night out whilst on a city break with DH. It’s irrelevant as to where we are going (other than weather!).

I will keep looking and hoping I will find a suitable dress in my size!

I am bumping this for you, as you've had some really unhelpful replies. I'm not sure why people bothered posting if they were just going to tell you to wear what you want, which I'm sure you knew anyway! I don't see why mentioning the city brought on those replies, you were just sharing a detail!

I'm not very good at finding links for people (I just enjoy reading the usually great replies), so I really am just bumping for you. But I love how you've described your style. You'll love Edinburgh.

TizerorFizz · 01/08/2024 09:53

That mini dress in a size 18 is ?

I’ve been to Edinburgh. Didn’t see anyone dressed up. Are you clubbing? Get an Uber. DMs just scream not dressed up as do Converse. I’d do wide leg jeans and a silk shirt. Something classy.

Lj8893 · 01/08/2024 11:11

Oh I’ll go back, it definitely was out of stock when I looked.

may well go clubbing, who knows!
Heels is nothing to do with walking, I just dont like wearing them. Much prefer to be comfortable for dancing!

Similarly to heels, I don’t find jeans comfortable either and have yet to find a pair that fit me properly with my big tummy and flat bum! Shirts don’t work either with my ample chest.

I shall keep looking for a dress 😃

The replies were "unhelpful" as you put it because the question wasn't clear.

OP mentioned a city break in Edinburgh. There's no particular reason for wearing anything different in Edinburgh than you'd wear in any other major, cultural city break.

Edinburgh is not a dressy city despite heaving with Michelin restaurants , fabulous hotels and Harvey Nicks etc so unless the venue was one of the very swanky 5 star hotels, dressing up isn't a big thing. The OP or anyone else, can dress up if they want or not, if they don't want to.

However what the OP actually wanted information on is "what to wear on a night out with husband which might include going clubbing on a budget of £50"? - which other than the budget is a huge remit.

Lj8893 · 01/08/2024 13:09

I think what reads as “unhelpful” is the “you don’t need to dress up” comments. Which isn’t what I asked about.

I perhaps didn’t word my OP very well, what I was after was dress suggestions to fit my brief. I have since sent a couple of examples of how I usually dress, but unfortunately not available in my size.

I think where I am going and how dressy I may or may not want to be is irrelevant to my question.

OP posts:
Somethingsnappy · 01/08/2024 13:44

Your post was worded just fine! Other posters start threads asking for ideas for city breaks, without receiving the snippy replies. Your OP was perfectly clear. You didn't even mention wanting to be dressed up.

Although as mentioned before, I'm not great at helping out with links, I can suggest having a look at the shops on Cockburn (pronounced Co - burn) street while you're in Edinburgh (a street just off the royal mile) . From the image I have in my head of your style, I think you might love some of those shops, which from memory of when I lived in Edinburgh, were independent, and pretty funky.

Lj8893 · 01/08/2024 13:50

Oh sounds fab, thankyou, I will be sure to check it out!
