Does this look ok for a wedding celebration party (no ceremony)?

Context is southern Spain in mid-September, late afternoon and evening buffet and dancing in a fancy hotel but the hotel also have a pool party kind of vibe to it. Would imagine most guests (literally hundreds of them) will be European/ Middle Eastern, well-off, glam, and in their 30s. I am none of those things (not well-off, don't dress up, mid-50s, English).

I'm quite hard to dress - 5ft 2, don't show legs, a bit overweight, mid-50s, need natural fabrics but can't afford silk etc. This dress ticks the boxes in that the shape and colour suits, it covers my legs (more like a mid-maxi on me), shows my waist, and is cotton. Minus is that it possibly isn't dressy enough. I'd wear it with suede block platforms, jewellery and get a bag to try and make it look a bit more dressy. It's also quite booby on me, which I'm putting in the plus camp as it makes it feel more like a going-out than office dress on me.

I don't know if I'm overthinking it. Maybe the younger people will all be quite casual, I have no idea. Thoughts welcome! I did also get an Another Sunday dress which I liked but the proportions completely swamped me.

I was going to say no, that the fabric makes it look casual and the colour hard to wear (looks more dark orange than red), but it looks fab on you. You have an amazing figure and colouring so I think you could wear many different styles.

Thanks I'm going to keep it as back up then have a look around shops beginning of September to see if anything else. It's put my mind at rest though to have at least something now. I ordered 7 dresses and sending 5 back, so have had enough for now.

Generally have to order online to get the petite length so not quite as easy as just browsing shops.

You look great in that photo, OP. Really lovely. Shoes included.

you look amazing in that dress @Fraa perfect for a wedding in the heat

DelphiniumBlue · 21/07/2024 14:32

The dress suits you and you could bling it up with gold earrings/bracelets etc.

Mamabear487 · 21/07/2024 15:23

It looks nice on! I would pair it with gold heeled sandals and gold bag personally:)

Lovely dress. This is lovely but maybe a tad over budget

Op wear that dress...it looks great on you.Dress it up with gold block sandals and gold jewellery ( H&M gold if you don't have the real deal). You will look amazing and its perfect for dancing in.Take some gold slider flat sandals of sparkly flip flops if you want out the heels later.

OneNewUser · 21/07/2024 17:19

Agree with others - the outfit you have looks great on you. No need to change anything!

Tryonemoretime · 21/07/2024 18:35

You look lovely in that dress! I might buy it in Chartreuse....😉

Mosaic123 · 21/07/2024 19:24

Definitely add faux gold jewellery. It looks good on you.

RallySooney · 21/07/2024 20:06

OP, would you consider posh espadrilles (Penelope Chilvers) to wear with the red dress?

I''ll try them...not sure the shades will be quite right. These are the shoes. Can't do a photo for some reason.

Moda stuff is great

As a pp said red and pink, or orange and pink, look fab. Also the clashing colours are very trendy!

Fraa · 21/07/2024 20:15

I just ordered some gold platforms as per the kind suggestions, similar style as black ones in my pictures. They are not gold all over - gold straps but wooden sole and heel, all over gold would be a bit full on for me.

So I'll try the pink, and gold, and see how I get on.

I'll have a look, not really an espadrille wearer but I need to expand my clothes style in general, not just for this occasion.

Definitely go for clashing colours. Little bit quirky and stylish.
You'll look great!

mitogoshi · 21/07/2024 20:20

On an aside, why do & other stories have such unflattering images??? No smiles, material awkwardly draped, models without shape? Considering how expensive they are they could take better photos!

BirthdayRainbow · 21/07/2024 20:23

The dress looks lovely on you. I don't believe you're mid 50's. However, I think you could get better shoes for it.

Chickenvhotdog · 21/07/2024 20:24

Agree with others. I thought from your OP it may look too casual, but you look amazing in it! It looks much better on you than the Boden model, the colour is fantastic too. Definitely keep it OP - not as a backup. Have confidence in your gorgeousness!

Thewaytogohome · 21/07/2024 20:29

Love it on you! Like idea of gold block sandals. Raffia bags are in at the moment, and pretty classic so can use on other holidays. I think that dress would look good with an updo, with wavy tendrils. Nothing stiff, more relaxed. Enjoy - you'll look lovely.

Babychewtoy · 21/07/2024 20:30

You look great in the dress.
Agree with others that different shoes might be better. A more summery colour would be good - gold/ white / a bright colour.

Thewaytogohome · 21/07/2024 20:35

I'm imagining a hair do like this.

Fraa · 21/07/2024 21:25

I've got very fine hair so not sure I can manage that much of an up-do. I'm going to have a look at gold jewellery, I only have silver.

Thank you all for the encouragement. I've been in a bit of a menopausal slump the last few years with clothes and my looks, it's been good to be forced to buy new things and try and think of some new things re hair, jewellery, clothes etc.

I did see a lovely raffia bag today! It had a green leather plaited strap. Someone was wearing it, not in a shop. I did think I might like one like that, for use in general.

I like the idea of the pink shoes with the red dress, I think that would look great. Dress looks fab on you, much better than the model and definitely wedding suitable.
