10yr old is slightly whiffy under arms on sweaty days. Any recommendations for deodorant? What should I be avoiding for chislren chemical wise? I use a roller Nivea myself as any sprays set off my asthma but wondered if more gentle product available for DC. TIA

Fussy?

I've not used it but one of my teens who does alot outdoors stuffabd away alot of weekends has this as it packs easily and they like the smells you can pick.

DD also 10 has the wild deodorant, it's quite pricey but it lasts for absolutely ages

RookieMa · 19/07/2024 23:02

DS uses Mitchum spray. He prefers a spray

DD Mitchum stick

Never gone in for the non chemical route because I think it's utter nonsense

DD and I have started using a Nivea roll on which works really well

You need anti perspirant NOT just a deodorant as all that does is mask the smell of BO and not well

dontforgetme · 19/07/2024 23:04

My 10 year old dd uses roll on dove. Absolutely hates it and moans blind but she really needs to wear it now.
I just went for the same deodorant I use.

Thanks all. So maybe the chemical thing isn’t such an issue then?

@SunGoesIntoHiding I think it all comes down to your kids preference and yours of course. We use a non-chemical deodorant. It works and It just feels like the right thing to do. Who knows what the chemical stuff is actually doing?

We use balm from a company called Rubb. They have a kids deodorant coming out soon which looks like it's gonna be a refillable roll on type thing.

My 8yr old uses salt of the earth, works well and smells lovely, she has ocean and coconut: Salt of the Earth Natural Deodorant Roll On Ocean & Coconut - 100% Natural Ingredients, Effective Protection, Vegan & Cruelty Free. Suitable for Men, Women & Kids - 75ml : Amazon.co.uk: Beauty

Went through a load of non chemical ones that didn't work for my ds and found nuud really does work- promise I don't work for them! We now all use it. Ds has sensory issues and this one doesn't offend him on either smell or texture/ feel

WildCherryBlossom · 12/08/2024 10:50

My eldest DD and I tried salt of the earth. It worked well at first but dried out spits out so much the skin became raw and painful. This was a few years ago so maybe the formulation has been updated.

For sports we now use Bionsen deodorant (not antiperspirant - sweating is actually important during high intensity sports) and for antiperspirant either Dove roll on of Vaseline sensitive spray on.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 12/08/2024 10:52

My DD uses Mitchum roll on. She started off with deodorant at 8, all natural and no chemicals but she absolutely reeks!

Went to Dove and that was a bit better but actually Mitchum is the only thing that seems to cut it. My DD is seriously stinky - just hoping the hormones calm down soon as she is very whiffy!

She might prefer a Dove stick rather than roll-on. I hate the wet feeling that roll-ons give you.

WellyBellyBoo · 12/08/2024 11:11

Mine used Sure or Nivea roll on from about age 9 with no issues. Now uses mitchum as the others don't seem to work well enough. There's no way a deodorant without anti perspirant would have helped. The chemical thing is a matter of choice, some people will quote evidence one way or the other but ultimately the jury's out.

Lovetotravel123 · 12/08/2024 11:21

Wild is really good. I think it is healthier and manages to withstand hot days.

Mangobaby25 · 28/08/2024 10:32

@WildCherryBlossom my eldest (11) also had v unhappy armpits after using Salt of the earth, but we've since tested a brand called Rubb Deodorant, who have developed a new deo for little ones with none of the bad stuff, and it works v well! No irritation at all, as they've removed all the irritating ingredients that Salt of the earth and Wild use (baking soda etc). He's used it for about about 5-6 wks so far, and we'll be using that from now on. Probably for DD (8) too, who is also very active and can smell after a long day. I know they are launching soon as we've nearly finished all our test deodorant package lol

sunshinechaser · 28/08/2024 10:44

My DS just uses normal spray antiperspirant same as his dad's. Why would chemicals matter? Are they absorbed through the skin? I've never given this a moment's thought.

WildCherryBlossom · 28/08/2024 10:46

Thanks @Mangobaby25 I'll keep an eye out for that!

Blarn · 28/08/2024 10:49

Nearly dd1 is nearly ten and wasn't smelly but was getting sweaty and conscious about it so I got her a stick one, Sanex I think. It dries quickly unlike a roll on and she can't accidentally spray it into her face rather than her armpit like I did this morning! I looked at the natural ones but I've always used a regular anti perspirant.

Saisong · 28/08/2024 10:50

My DD used Bionsen for quite a while when she was a tween/young teen.

HauntedBungalow · 28/08/2024 10:58

There aren't any age restrictions on regular deodorant and they're safe for everyone including children.

Mangobaby25 · 28/08/2024 10:59

@sunshinechaser I didn't either until I started getting irritation under my arms and ended up in a google hole haha, basically there's loads of stuff in anti perspirant and some deodorants that are really damaging for all of us really, but esp our little ones. Aluminium, alcohol in nearly all of them, and then I read that aerosols aren't advised for kids cause they breathe them in more apparently. Feels a bit like you can't do anything right, so I just buy a natural deodorant mentioned above (called Rubb) for DS and DD and know that it hasn't got anything nasty in! It's only got like 6 ingredients or something and they're all natural, but it works like a charm.

DrCoconut · 28/08/2024 11:38

Following for ideas. My DS is autistic and hates the feeling of deodorant. But he's 13 and smells like a ferret cage without.

Lovethatforyouhun · 28/08/2024 16:10

I don’t use aluminium anti persp, just naturalish deodorants. I do not smell. You have to wash well with proper soap under the arms daily, shower gel won’t cut it.
My fave is Megababe as its not messy and works brilliantly.

Chemicals are absorbed by the skin hence certain medications are applied that way. Modern life is chock full of chemicals, you can’t avoid them all, but this was an easy change to make…she says as she covers her face in makeup 😂
