50’s size 16, no dresses so what can I wear?

As I said, I don’t want to wear dresses as I’m usually walking the dog or cleaning, and I get chub rub. I usually wear leggings/short leggings and t-shirts and desperately need to sort myself out. I’m sure I’d look more shapelier if I wore better clothes.

TBH if you just want stuff for walking the dog and cleaning then you probably wont find better then leggings and t-shirt!😉
Although you could try something different like a pair of well fitted jeans, cargos or parachute pants. Maybe invest in a more fitted tee as well.

Have a look on Halara. They have some more tailored pieces but made with comfortable, stretchy material. They also have practical clothing like dresses with shorts underneath, pockets etc.

Other than dog walking and cleaning, how do you spend your days? What would you be dressing for? Country, town, city? Who do you see, how do you travel about?

And, crucially, what’s your budget for new clothes?

Betteroutdoors · 19/07/2024 11:22

If you want something a touch smarter but still practical then Acai trousers are worth a look. I quite like them, but honestly didn't love them enough although a lot of people really do.

It would just be for popping out for coffee or shopping.
And there’s no budget, but not hundreds of pounds.

Hi op somebody recommended Fat Face to me on threads have a look. I got a nice dress on Bon Marche I wear my denim jacket with it. Some dresses dont suit me just drown me in more fabric.

TheQueenWhoNeverWas · 19/07/2024 12:48

I'd advise looking at New Look and Tu at Sainsbury's if you want attractive practical stuff without spending too much. You could do a lot worse than a trip to a huge Sainsbury's to just look at stuff if you've got one. Wide leg trousers are a good option for this summer.

And do try one of the many chub rub solutions on offer, because being able to wear skirts and dresses makes summer so much easier.

Oblomov24 · 19/07/2024 13:10

What about longer smarter shorts?

mumonthehill · 19/07/2024 13:11

M and s pull on wide leg jersey trousers might be a good place to start. Smarter than leggings but very comfortable.

I am almost 50 and a size 16. I am often NOT stylish. But I do have a few things that make me feel better dressed.

Nicely fitted trousers - I have some cargo pants that are sort of just above the ankle (very similar to these), some chinos in similar lengths, a pair of wide legged linen blend (less creasy) that look like a lighter fabric version of these witout th ecargo style pockets, all of which I feel really good in. even better if the waist is elasticated or the fabric is stretchy.

For tops, this is hrd for me as I have larger breasts and carry weight on my tummy. But t-shirt style in thicker fabrics work well and I like to get things that have a pattern or a colour. I have various short sleeve/crossover/v-neck/button up type tops/shirts, often in colours or prints that I like.

The odd dress is good too (not for dog walking) but I usually wear with chub rub shorts underneath.

Begsthequestion · 19/07/2024 13:58

Would you wear a dress over leggings or cycling shorts?

Donotgogentle · 19/07/2024 14:03

These have sorted out my chub rub. They may open up dress options for you.

Donotgogentle · 19/07/2024 14:05

M&S also has decent dress options this season.

BuffaloCauliflower · 19/07/2024 14:08

If you’d like to look at dresses, the Snag chub rub shorts are excellent, not hot, really comfy and do away with chub rub

With jeans/trousers ou need to pay attention to shapes and keep up to date. Have a look at barrel legs, I'm size 14 / 16 and find them very flattering. Tu and primark do them, Cos have a lovely dark blue denim. Toast have some canvas ones. Wear with a jacket that's an up to date shape. It's all about the fit as well. Trainers that are the right shape, new balance and m & s are my go to. Mix in a pair of leather waterproof knee boots or wellies. Perfect for dog walking as well as town.

PrincessofWells · 19/07/2024 14:14

Have a look at Trinny online. I find her an inspiration sometimes, on how to put clothes together, and shapes. She's 60ish.

Linen or cotton culottes, I have this one and this one

I wear white shirts 50% of the time, the t shirts I get from here

A raffia bag or one of those Uniqlo banana bags if I walk the dog.

I wear chunky silver jewellery. Birkies or trainers, or the Zara flats in wacky colours (red, silver etc).

Would second the m%s anti chafe shorts. I'm a size 20 and never wore dresses until i found them. Now my clothes are a lot of dresses and I often walk over 10000 steps in them (walk to station to go to work and back). They have been a total game changer

henlake7 · 20/07/2024 09:10

Ive def gotten more into dresses recently. They really make you look like you've put effort in (but with very little actual effort in reality!).
They are def wearable for average dog walks and cleaning, etc. If I have a mucky dog walk planned I chuck on leggings and tee for the duration and for cleaning (if you want more movement then I just whip the dress off and do whatever in my chub rub shorts!).

Ive never ben a dress person before but they are so easy to wear and like I said you can so easily throw it off and on if you 'need' to wear something slobbier for certain jobs!
