Going naturally grey

I'm 38, dark brown hair and currently getting my roots done every six weeks to hide the ever-increasing strips of grey.

I've been thinking about how to transition to grey for a while and today we took the beginning steps.

Plan is to lighten up my whole hair, add some light pieces through so that my whole hair is a much lighter and multi-tonal brown, which will make it easier for my grey roots to come through. Do a fairly big chop at some point so that the ratio of brown-grey shifts.

Can anyone else share their experiences of going grey, and the process you went through (and do you love it now??)

Yeah i'm the same as you - 39 and going more and more grey.

I have blonde through my hair, it's ashy blonde and i've had highlights built up and built up over the past few years. It blends it in.

Yeah I like it, but I do love my dark hair to be honest so I may ask them to tone it down a bit darker when i go next week. Having the differing tones in your hair does make it less noticeable. My hair is extremely dark brown - almost black, so anything to lessen the contrast is good for me.

No tips but I've got dark brown almost black hair and a ton of grey, I'm 37. I really can't be arsed faffing with dyeing it so I'm just leaving it as is and assume it will look better at some point 🤣

My hairdresser put a toner through it and turned it a soft gold and then I just let the grey come through. It is very white all around my face, so it came through a lovely silver and I’m very happy with it.
It was a bit of a shock at first, but not having to to the hairdresser for hours every 3 minutes is great.

I had long hair, that I used to get foiled blonde, then one day decided nope not doing this any more. Got it cropped into a pixie cut, and left the dye to grow out.

Its now half way down my back with silver grey and salt and pepper sections.

My hairdresser is amazed at how great the condition is and how shiny my silver is.

I love it, others not so much, but then again I don't care what other people think.

I love just going for a cut and blow dry twice and year and being in and out very quickly

My dark brown hair started going white in my thirties and I dyed it. Gradually it was dyed a lighter shade, the white bits took less dye so they looked like highlights. Eventually the dye was a light blonde and I stopped all dyeing when I could no longer see the regrowth line.
The whole process did take some years, but I never felt that my hair looked anything but natural. Although those who knew me with a full head of brown hair, knew the truth.
I now have white silver hair which I keep in tip top condition with chemical free products.

I've got very dark brown hair, almost black but it's also thick.
I was pleasantly surprised by how nice it looked when I grew it out, it suits my face having the lighter (grey) looking back at photos when I coloured it, it was too dark and fierce for my face and looked awful.
I really like my S&P look.

Grew mine out in lockdown the painful way. Wore a lot of hats. Had it cut a lot shorter than usual. It's pretty grey on top, and by the sides of my ears, but there's still a lot of dark brown mixed in too. I'm really glad I did it. Once people got used to it, I got a lot of compliments, although also lots of 'fuck me we're old now' comments from people I hadn't seen for a bit. I seem to be a lot greyer than my friends, which is probably due to some auto-immune conditions, so I couldn't keep up the expense and effort of dying it. I also think it suits my aging skin more than the all over dark brown I had. I have a lot of hair so even though it's grey it's still very voluminous so doesn't look flat and sad.

Grey blending is your friend.

I don't dye my hair, because it's such a dark brown the grey looks silver and almost like tinsel I like it. It can be wiry though so I double check it after I've straightened it as it looks a bit witchy if they start curling up.

I've got black hair and grey is coming through thick and fast. I'm 41 and similar to others on this thread, I just can't be arsed with the expense and upkeep of colouring it (I did once colour it bright pink when the grey came through a few years back). I'm still predominantly black and don't think I could lighten my hair to help it blend without bleach - I don't want to do that. I have been thinking about trying purple shampoo though, have any other greying dark haired folk tried it?

I have no tips as have never dyed my hair. I'm 39 and very grey. Just want to say that's great that you want to embrace it!

kersh33 · 20/07/2024 21:27

I am dark with a fair bit of grey and didn't want to keep dying either.

I had my hair cut into a pixie ( which I love and have kept!) and grey balayage put through to give me an intentional salt and pepper look. My roots now just look like a continuation of the rest.

I have the balayage topped up every 9 months or so to keep it looking right. I actually love my hair and think it suits me!
