What coat / jacket for early Autumn?

I live in Australia and I'm coming home in September, early October. What coat do I need, worried I might feel the cold but don't want to buy something I'll never use in my Australian wardrobe. I have an oversized trench but it's a lot of fabric for travelling.
Any ideas?

Is home the UK? Cornwall or Shetland? Weather's a bit different all over...

Sorry .... I was multitasking!
Fly into Edinburgh and out of London, so spending time north and south.

I know this is S & B and these are potentially not super stylish but I swear by my lightweight puffer in autumn and spring, all year round basically! Mine is from bravissimo so it’s got a nice shape but the Uniqlo lightweight ones are good. A bit waterproof and small and light enough to scrunch into a bag if it’s too warm for a jacket.

Who knows. You've lived here before you know how changeable the weather is. Early September last year it was 30°c in the south for a few days.

Lightweight puffer would probably cover it.

Quilted jacket maybe. Scotland could be very different to London. You may need something for rain. Sometimes it's hot in October sometimes cold! Layers?

lol sent my reply at the same time as the others and they're reassuringly similar!!

systemicmotivations · 18/07/2024 09:04

I'd do a light puffer type jacket or quilted and ensure you have plenty layers for colder days or for those days where it starts as one weather and changes by the hour. That should be fine for anywhere in the UK really and I'm in Scotland too.

Layers (merino is good and wicks moisture) and a lightweight shower proof cover-up.

A scarf of pashmina you can use on the flight in case of cold A/C.

After a long tiring flight, you could feel tired and cold at the airport. Put something warm you can pull out of your hand luggage to put on. Pashminas are my flying saviours!

Even this week the answers could be different from day to day, let alone September ... 😂

When versatility is needed, I would always go lighter weight waterproof that I could layer things under for warmth if needed.

MinistryofMom · 18/07/2024 09:08

Puffer to keep the chill off and layer it up with a thin waterproof if it's wet.

Both fold up super small and you can get them relatively cheaply here, depending on your budget.

Friyay27 · 18/07/2024 09:29

Oh god - I really didn't want a puffer! I have a north face vest, which I thought would be fine casual but not for other things.
I'm all about the layers, and I hate being cold but I don't really need a coat in a Queensland climate.

This is my trench, if it's not pulled back (like on the pic) it feels really bulky. Just worried it's too much coat and not that warm.

Yep, I think you're going to need a puffer underneath that!

There's a reason why Europe has embraced the hideousness of the puffy coat. They're very versatile!

You'll never look back!

The frustrating thing is it will be worn for 4 weeks begrudgingly and then never again.

Uniqlo. Not expensive

So don't buy one. The UK is not bitterly cold in September/ October. Just layer up with base layer, midlayer and a jacket you will wear - doesn't have to be heavy if you've layered.

Don't buy a coat you won't wear and don't like.
