Tips on looking less "basic"

I'm getting bored of my style and would like to be inspired by women who are looking different, more interesting, artsy maybe. I'm in my 40's and size 10.

Can anyone point to some brands, ideas, influencers or ways of styling clothes so I don't look so ordinary.

Can you say what sorts of things you currently wear and/or your lifestyle so people know what kinds of things to recommend? There’s a big spectrum!

Chaosx3x · 16/07/2024 23:52

Also depends what you mean by ordinary. For example I follow Alexandra Steadman on Instagram and I think she’s very stylish but she’s not particularly “different”, her style is quite mainstream and she follows a lot of trends eg. She has red adidas gazelles like every other Instagram fashion influencer at the moment. So I don’t know if she would fit your description of ordinary or not?

Currently I wear a lot of wide leg trousers and blouses or tops. Quite a lot of oversized blazers and platform-ish shoes.

I am short with long dark thick hair that is highlighted and center parted.

I work in a very creative profession.

Yeah, just checked Alexandra Steadman out and I dress a bit like her and that's what I am bored of. Ha ha!

Why not cut out the middle-woman by creating your own way of dressing? You have entire runway collections accessible in the palm of your hand - it’s easy enough to look at a few collections every week, note new proportions or colour combinations and apply those things to your own wardrobe. It’s hard to see why you’d need an influencer to interpret design for you?

I’m quite intrigued by

A. Roege Hove

at the moment.

im the same. I’m in a creative profession and bored of my look I need new ideas so jumping in your thread.
I tend to see someone I like on insta then even follow some of their followers for inspo.

John Lewis do a free personal shopper experienced it really changed the way I dressed myself

Are you in England? Because I was just back there for a month and all I could think was every middle aged woman looked exactly the same except from their haircuts. Same weird, kind of next version of Amish dresses, same ugly sneakers that didn't complement their ankles, same striped shirts and same jeans!

Garlickest · 17/07/2024 02:23

Insufficient information. What does different, interesting, artsy look like in your head?

Some possible avenues (by no means exclusive!):
Normal clothes in brightly-coloured graphic prints, a bit nursery adjacent;
Floaty, ethereal, draped;
Clashing colour blocks, layers;
Wide structured, large antique prints;
3D architectural, folds;
Shiny, sparkly;
Retro styles: 60s, 50s, 40s, 30s;
Geometric silhouette: inverted pyramid; balloon;
Masculine with good fabrics;
String, mesh, crochet with big pants underneath;
Ethnic-adjacent: Chinese, Indian, Tajik; embroidery.

Or various combinations of same, or other Confused

I agree with you that a lot of women dress similarly, but how can a shoe complement an ankle, and why do trainers not do this?

henlake7 · 17/07/2024 05:29

Nothing complements my ankles....they are fugly, and one is fatter then the other! (baseball boots for me).😆

Surely you have some idea of what styles you like OP? I mean if you cant really see anything you like maybe 'basic' just is your style? (nothing wrng with a basic, classy look).
Personally I had to reinvent myself somewhat in my 50s and I am def sliding towards a more vintage/retro, boho look. But alot of this stuff is just calling my name! LOL😀

Accessories are a great way of changing up your look. Maybe a bag that is out of your normal comfort zones d same with things like shoes and jewellery. For example of you wear classic necklaces and ear rings maybe check out Tatty Devine for something a bit more fun and quirky. You could start your image overhaul there and then build up to changing it up.
