Loose cotton dress for tropics

GlitteringUnicorn · 15/07/2024 13:47

Hi
I am about to spend a few weeks in the tropics- it will be very hot with high humidity.
I am trying to find cool, loose, floaty and lightweight dresses. Ideally will pack easily, dry easily and not plain (as they show every mark). Definitely not thick cotton/jersey and must cover my arms.
This is the best I have found

www.aspiga.com/products/emma-cotton-dress-shell-navy-white

But £90 seems quite excessive and I will need to buy 4-5 of this sort of thing.

Has anyone seen anything similar please? (And there won't be any opportunity to buy something out there before someone suggests that!)
Thank you

Have you looked online at the H&M sale? You can filter for material & there are loads of cotton & linen dresses on there with sleeves that have been recently reduced. Due to our dreadful Summer no doubt. Lots of Other Stories, Arket & Monki too.

I’d go to Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s and stock up: lots of cotton frocks

I agree
Or try Amazon. I bought some lovely cotton midi dresses from Amazon last summer

OP told you she is from the area. No need to keep going on about this - we get the picture (as provided to us by you).

I find the ignorance shocking, I'm guessing it's a generational thing. I've made my point, provided some literature and invited you to do some reading. You dont have to agree with me. Also internalised colonialism is a real thing.

I think calling someone a fool when you dont disagree with them is unkind. Exposing yourself there x

beybey20 has bored me sufficiently that I'm going to book my pale white self onto a long holiday in THE TROPICS.

Agreed. No need to sink to this level, even if you don't agree.

Is this wokeness gone mad?

Are we allowed to say the weather is tropical?

What about the book Tropic of Cancer- title change?

Fight back against this kind of thing.

IdeallySunnyPleaseToday · 19/07/2024 13:27

The White Company always does linen but their sale is now on - not sure what's left.

Also, J Lewis has some of their own brand linen dresses.

I'd be grateful if you could go elsewhere- this is the style and beauty forum.
Your sanctimonious input is not helpful
Even when I told you I was going HOME to where I was born and raised and do not find the term tropics emotive you have still continued to derail this thread

To all those that have been helpful and talked about SUMMER dresses for a TROPICAL climate I thank you.

The lightest cotton dresses I have ever found are by a brand called At Last on Wolf & Badger.

They do very finest lightest Indian cotton dresses in a variety of prints. It’s not the kind of cotton dress you can buy here.

They’re not cheap - around £90 a throw but you can pick them up on eBay for around £50. Size up if you have big boobs as they come up quite small across the chest.

The use of the word tropical to describe the Caribbean is of colonial legacy.
The word came about to describe the "otherness" of everything outside England as the tropical world. There is a lot of literature to read (eg look up the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine) if you'd like to explore the off chance that you dont know everything.

That's not what it describes at all. Here is the origin of the word:

tropic (n.)
late 14c., "either of the two circles in the celestial sphere which describe the northernmost and southernmost points of the ecliptic," from Late Latin tropicus "of or pertaining to the solstice" (as a noun, "one of the tropics"), from Latin tropicus "pertaining to a turn," from Greek tropikos "of or pertaining to a turn or change; of or pertaining to the solstice" (as a noun, "the solstice," short for tropikos kyklos), from tropē "a turning" (from PIE root trep- "to turn").*
The notion is of the point at which the sun "turns back" after reaching its northernmost or southernmost point in the sky. Extended 1520s to the corresponding latitudes on the earth's surface (23 degrees 28 minutes north and south); meaning "region between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn" is from 1837.

Just considering all the things that would be considered offensive were we to object to the word tropical - sunscreen, juice drinks, holidays, fish…

I've heard a lot of shite on mn in my time but think this is the biggest load on here now.

I often find linen too heavy but each year M&S do some lightweight cotton lawn midi/maxi dresses which are lovely and light. I also have some similar dresses from next. They are almost sheer but lovely and lightweight and have sleeves. They normally come with a belt so you can be more fitted or loosey goosey. I've also seen similar in George at Asda.

KirstenBlest · 19/07/2024 16:41

loosey-goosey?

The tropics is not a colonial term, it refers to the areas around the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn - it is just geographical. People who live in some countries (I don’t know about all) also refer to these areas as being in ‘the tropics’.

I was just coming on to say this. having read the complete balderdash (or am I not allowed to say that?? Perhaps someone can invent a spurious origin for the term making it offensive...) being spouted. Geographically its the region along the equator stretching North to the Tropic of Cancer and South to the Tropic of Capricorn. Right around the globe.
trying to forbid people from using the term because it may have been used by colonists is just absurd. You might just as well start banning 'Europe' or 'the Atlantic' or any word other than those invented post colonialism.

Lilt, the totally tropical taste....
Can it still be got? Haven't seen it for years.

BiliousOhGod · 19/07/2024 19:17

I've worked in hot and dry and "modest" places, and holidayed in and around the equator (are we allowed to say that? 😉) and love Amazon dresses. I have 5 of these from last year in different colours / prints and wear them as beach and office dresses. I got them at less than£20 each, though, so... Otherwise, I look at those labelled as "lagenlook". You don't need to like the total aesthetic, but they are usually linen or linen / cotton blend and loose fitting.

Chai fashions online. They have some lovely dresses & Kaftans. I haven't ordered online with them but I've bought lots from their store and it washes and wears great.

It was discontinued last year. My husband wasn’t happy as it was his favourite soft drink. Now he has to make do with the Aldi knock off.

No doubt beybey20 will have an aneurysm…

Oh goodness OP are you still there? Most importantly do you have your dresses now? I mentioned upthread that I've got some lovely linen and cotton ones from Seasalt. Sale is still on.

From post colonial theory to fizzy drinks nostalgia. This thread should be in MN classics 😂

onegreyhair · 21/07/2024 21:34

I now have five dresses in my Amazon basket to think about tomorrow when the excitement has worn off.
What about other geographical terms then can we still use those: equatorial (rainforest), arctic circle (northern lights etc)?
