Will this 2nd degree burn leave a scar?

Will this burn leave a scar? How long does this usually heal? (Picture attached)

I spilled boiling coffee on my pants and it soaked it and pushed against my skin. It took me 5, minutes before rinsing it with running water.

It's a 2nd degree burn because it has blisters, on the first day of it the redness doesn't go away and it was alarming for me. The blisters popped but the redness is still there. The redness is getting darker and it never left.

Will this leave a scar? I really love my legs it hurt my heart. What should I do? can you give me advice?

this is how it looks like before and after, I took pictures everyday .

I did similar. I was on my lunchbreak in my car. Went back to work, put water on it...but felt so much pain that I then went straight to A&E. I can't remember whether it blistered or not. I reckon that you should get that checked out. Mine didn't scar, but - as I said - I don't remember whether I blistered.

Some years previously, I got 2nd degree burns on the back of both my hands. (Frying pan fire. Not my fault, but I was the one who had to deal with it.)

The nurse at A&E told me that I'd scar. I was so pissed off that I Googled like mad...Bought myself an expensive jar of Creme de la Mer. Used it on both hands. Did not scar.

Having said all that...OP I feel for you. I remember how painful it was when I scalded my thighs. I'd used cold water straight away, but the hospital gave me ice packs. I think you should get that checked out so that the hospital can dress it for you, though it does look as though the original redness has died down.

I recall being told by the A&E nurse to keep my burned hands out of sunlight for a year after the accident. I think she also told me to use moisturiser after it healed. As I said, I used Creme de la Mer (after reading about its original use for burns) and I didn't scar. That must have been about 20 years ago or more.

Did you get that looked at my a health care provider, nurse or doctor.

It will fade but because of how deep it was it will take time though, but I think only a medical professional can tell you about permanent scaring. Which if you've had proper medical care you can ask about scaring.

MigGirl · 15/07/2024 01:46

For anyone else reading this thread. The first aid treatment for burns changed a couple of years ago now. You need to keep a burn under cold running water for at lest 20 minutes, not 10 minutes. If it still hurts when you take it out then put it back in, a burn this size is really an A&E job due to risk of infection especially with blisters. Don't mess about with burns, I've sent kids to A&E with much smaller burns just to be on the safe side. 👍

mamimiaaaaaaaa · 15/07/2024 02:36

Thank you @WearyAuldWumman !!! The last picture is 13 days ago, it doesn't hurt anymore. The part the blistered is the only red part left. All the brown part is close to peeling off. I bought a burn cream that is good for scars in UAE, it's called MEBO. I hope it helps. I'm surprised all of your burns didn't scar, I hope mine too.

Thank you @MigGirl the last picture is 13 days ago. It blistered for 5 days after it popped. No, I never went to get it checked but should I ?

@mamimiaaaaaaaa in short answer yes a burn like that should have been looked at, the biggest risk is infection where there is blistering. Proper treatment can reduce scaring as well, your luckily it's on the full side of your leg but burns on joints can be a big issue as the skin tightens can cause movement issues on joints. I'm not a medical professional but have first aid training and unfortunately have had to deal with a few burns.

It could still be worth seeing the nurse at your GP practice to make sure you are treating it correctly and that they think it is healing well. Next time go to A&E or a minor injury unit.

NotEvenTheRainHasSuchSmallHands · 15/07/2024 07:59

Ouch, OP, that looks really painful! I agree that you should have had it looked at, and maybe still should. I got a rope burn a few years ago on the back of my knee (long story!) and wasn't going to seek medical advice but my dh insisted. I was so glad I went, as they gave me special burn plasters which kept the wound moist and really helped it to heal painlessly. Please consider getting it checked out.

cheesypinwheel · 15/07/2024 09:23

Hi OP, yes you should go and get that looked at ASAP. The NHS says you should go to A&E for any burn bigger than your hand- that looks like it's around that size to me.

I had a similar burn on my arm (although mine might have been a bit deeper because it didn't hurt at all, so had damaged the nerves). I had to keep it covered and have it dressed by the nurse every few days for several weeks. I had very visible scarring for about a year, but now it isn't noticeable and just goes ever so slightly pinker than the rest of my skin in very hot weather. I suspect the burn care I received probably reduced the extent of the scarring, so it really is worth having it treated- plus a doctor/nurse can explain how to prevent infection.

Hope you feel better soon Flowers

bananacreampie · 15/07/2024 09:46

A burn that size should have been checked by a doctor, had Silvadene cream (or any other cream containing silver sulfadiazine) applied and then the burn dressed in gauze, and the rechecked for infection every few days and redressed.

But as you've missed that step! When it has completely healed, use Palmer's Cocoa Butter lotion on it daily.

Hi guys, it'sbeen 3 months since the accident happened and my burn healed. I didn't get an infection but I'm very sad the part that blistered is turning to white scar, but I'm not 100% sure it would be a white scar, what do you guys think? It's still pink-ish

I would just keep waiting it out OP. It may be that the best thing would have been to get help at the time but it's too late for that now.

It's nowhere near the same scale, but I have had much smaller burns that scared for ages but have eventually stopped scarring. Several I had marks for over 12 months and they did eventually improve. I don't know that you can predict what the long term outcome will be only a few months on.

You could always ask for a GP appointment in case there's anything that they can do or recommend.

mamimiaaaaaaaa · 24/09/2024 06:50

Hello, I posted my burn 3 months ago and asked if it will scar, some said it won't some said it depends. I was depressed!!! It was so so big and painful! But it ready healed but the part that blistered, I'm afraid might turn into a white scar. But it's still not fully healed for it's still pink-ish. What do you think? Will it turn into a white scar? Will it not? How can I prevent it from white scarring? Thank you

@cheesypinwheel thank you! Mine hurt so bad the first 4 days I think but it didn't hurt as much the following day I'm noy sure if it was a third or 2nd degree, I think we had a similar case. It's pinkish too out in the sun. I hope it improves!

I’ve got a scar just like that on my arm. I could see it all the time for about a year and then It faded to nothing and is only
visible, very faintly, when I get a tan. No one else would notice it.’

mamimiaaaaaaaa · 24/09/2024 06:58

@Ineffable23 hi, did you use any scar ointment to improve the appearance of the scars or you just waited it out?

@BoobyDazzler hello, thank you for this comment! I'm kind of relieved, may I ask if you used any ointment for the scar or you just waited for it to improve on it's own?

No, nothing at all. I think the white skin is just new skin and eventually it just tanned and weathered to the almost the same colour as my natural olive skin.

PollyOrange · 24/09/2024 07:13

My friend scalded herself and used the Tropic tamanu balm. I'm not a fan of the brand and it's hard sell /MLM structure but this stuff is really good for scars. Smells strange but it is good for burns.

I just waited it out but they were much much smaller.

parentingisstressful · 24/09/2024 09:50

Healing scars are very susceptible to sun damage, so make sure to protect the area from the sun (and continue to protect it for at least a year).

mamimiaaaaaaaa · 24/09/2024 23:52

@BoobyDazzler that's amazing! Thank you for letting me know, I felt relieved. I hope mine does that too. Have a good day!

I have a scald on my arm which whilst did "disappear ", shows as a dirty looking mark when I get tanned

AutumnTimeForCosy24 · 25/09/2024 01:56

Anything bigger than the palm of your hand you need to get checked.

its too late to stop it burning deeper, but they still might be able to help.

i think it'll fade or deepen rather, so you can barely see it, but you need to protect it from the sun.

Geppili · 25/09/2024 02:19

Your legs are still beautiful , Op!
