Highlights and hair care question!

Thegirlwithnousername · 14/07/2024 07:52

Hi,
I have lost a lot of weight and have decided to actually start looking after myself, Recently had my hair chopped off and at my next appointment I am going to have highlights added to blend in my greys.
My hairdresser was great and told me to get a purple shampoo so in preparation I have been looking at them.
My question is do I use a purple shampoo every hair wash? Or once a week?
I wash my hair daily if that makes any difference.
I have been looking at the bedhead range and they have two options so I am confused!

Sorry its long and thank you.

Purple shampoo is great for blights but only use it once a week as it can be quite drying. Also over use can cause build up so you end up with purple/ greyish tones.

Rattai · 14/07/2024 07:54

*hi lights not blights

Great thank you for a quick response that's really helpful.

I got a blue conditioner for my highlights. I figured it would be less drying than a shampoo. So far so good. I use it once every couple of weeks. It tones down some orangey/brassy bits.

Well done on the weight loss!
I wash my hair daily and use purple shampoo and conditioner twice a week. I find if I don't, it goes brassy. I also have a good purple/silver mask that helps that I use most Mondays.
If I want my hair to get more of a tint (if I have to leave it a long time between appointments) I will use it most days.
My hair is not that porous though.

CommeUneVacheEspagnole · 14/07/2024 08:11

I think you should use it as you see fit. Official advice is once a week for five minutes but I either do twice a week for around 5 or every day for a minute ish.

It is drying so use a good conditioner. I used to used a mask - just a store bought one. I'm sure it's Pantene (purple tub) and it made my hair so soft but if you're not meant to put conditioner on the root, you risk missing some.

I used to use it too much and had purple streaks in it so watch for that but it really is only with excessive use.

I use provoke which is available in Tesco and really cheap. I've tried all the fancy ones and really rate that one.

So much to learn when your use to just buying the cheapest shampoo and conditioner and not really caring!

Thank you, I will look at masks too! I have so much to learn! I am going to try once a week and see how I go!
Just nervous that I would ruin my hairdressers hard work by being such a newbie!

Don't worry, even if you do leave too long, it will resettle quickly.

FifteenLove · 14/07/2024 09:12

Be careful as it turns your parting purple! I use the Elvive one.

dementedpixie · 14/07/2024 09:15

@Thegirlwithnousername blue shampoo is for neutralising orange tones and purple is for neutralising yellow tones

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 14/07/2024 09:16

Whether you need blue or purple depends on the hair colour. If you're brunette and going for caramel highlights these will tend towards orange so you choose blue products (opposite on the colour wheel so neutralise each other). If you're going really blonde you'll need purple to get rid of yellow tones.

Funkyslippers · 14/07/2024 09:18

Just wanted to say I started having highlights 18 months ago and have never looked back. Disguises the greys brilliantly well & I don't have to keep retouching the roots myself

That makes sense!

When talking about colours she suggested purple shampoo so I will go for that to be on the safe side!

Oh brilliant that's what I wanted to hear, I have been going grey a long time and box dyes aren't covering it so well anymore.
Hopefully I will love it as much!

I recommend Bleach London shampoo, less drying than other purple shampoos I've tried.

Cantonet · 14/07/2024 13:51

I have bleached highlights on dark blonde hair with a sprinkling of grey. I was told to use a beige toner rather than a purple shampoo. The advantage is the one I'm using is a semipermanent, colours the grey and is conditioning at the same time. It means I can extend the time period between highlights too.

Highlights and hair care question!
ClaudiaWinklepanda · 14/07/2024 18:46

Ooh, @Cantonet , how effective is that at covering grey? I've never thought to use a toner as I presumed it would wash out in a couple of washes.

Cantonet · 14/07/2024 20:59

It's definitely coloured my big white streak at my temple. Its harder to see the change in the silvery strands but overall my hair looks better blended & refreshed. Its the first time i've used it as i was a little scared before. But i've recently returned from a holiday where my hair became a little frazzled & i thought i had nothing to lose. Semi permanents are thought to last up to 20 washes. Bearing in mind i'm 4 months into my highlights anything that extends the time between appointments is a benefit.
