Have seen these - anyone tried?

www.meandem.com/sweatshirting-wide-leg-trouser-navy

Much more expensive then I would usually go for and I'm a little bit concerned the wait and might look a bit bumpy on my size 12/14 belly opposed to the svelte size 8 in the pics.

Me&Em quality is great and usually a superior fabric, but I’m 5’5” and find other than elasticated cuff-at-the-ankles joggers, their trousers are way too long. I’ve bought several pairs in recent years but had to return. You need to be at least 5’ 7”. I don’t know why they don’t do regular leg lengths!

minimonkey11 · 14/07/2024 21:19

‘Sweatshirting’ would make me not buy them fullstop.

take a look in zara , though usually things look better in real life than they do on the online model

I've got some Zara ones. They are very comfortable. I'm 5'8" and they're long enough - just.

I like the brand and that’s not surprising because I’m in its target market. It’s also not surprising that it’s being worn by women in the public eye such as politicians, wives of politicians and members of the royal family and I’m not sure why that would put people off.

I’ve had a number of pairs of jogger type trousers from there which have looked great and washed and worn well. I’ve never bought any in the sweatshirting fabric as it’s not my thing and I don’t like the pockets on those, but nevertheless they will in a different league to M&S.

I am getting a bit fed up that every time someone posts something in this sort of price range that the main response is about the price, usually with a load of cheap ‘similar’ suggestions.

It depends on the item of clothing, if it's pants that will be worn a lot or look great for a high flying job or business then no price tag is too high IMO.

For jogging bottoms that will be worn for what, dog walking or a rush trip to the corner shop or slobbing at home, what's the point in spending over £100 for one pair.

Katiepoes · 15/07/2024 12:40

I have these in dark green, I love them. The waistband is thick and heavy and sites right across the middle of my very round belly in a way that flatters well, the skim my bum without making it flat and they hang beautifully. Mine are three years old and still look great, they're worn at least weekly and are my standard for travelling. They are long though - I am 5' 10 and they come right down over my foot, I wear them with chunky soles and it works perfectly. I'm a size 14-16 and carry weight on my middle if that helps.

MrsSlocombesCat · 15/07/2024 13:02

Good grief £105 for joggers?! More money than sense, some people, as my nan used to say.

Because my life doesn't consist of doing anything "nicer" than that. I don't see why that should mean I can't wear quality clothes in good fabrics that hang well and make me feel great. You might not value those activities or care how you look and feel whilst doing them, but I do. Judging by the fact such items are sold and the companies selling them haven't gone bust, I assume many other people like wearing quality clothes for basic activities too

CurrentHun · 15/07/2024 17:12

Easipeeleri can you link to your joggers?

My M&S comment was because I thought from the navy version OP posted from M&E was extremely similar to a standard M&S offering. That’s what my eye registered. Definitely go for M&E trousers though if you are happy to pay 5 x more to look like you’re wearing M&S Collection trousers, than it would be to actually buy them from M&S. I’m only going on looks here and that’s my subjective impression of what I see.

Obviously I can’t say anything about a nicer weight or feel of fabric or the joy of wearing a non-M&S pair, because clearly this is just a visual exercise. Those IRL factors like fabric feel are all absolute valid reasons for spending whatever you can afford on an item. Absolutely fine. Those subjective things are definitely part of value for money in my book.

Caveat to the visual appeal of these specific trousers though- I looked at the Olive colour version to try to see more of the detail. Turns out the patch pockets are back and front and that it has numerous quirky seams as part of the design detail, and raw hems. Those things are not for me as a design detail personally. Even though a very soft heavy fabric pair of wide legged trousers seems like a very useful thing to have in the wardrobe and I will keep looking out for something in that ballpark. I’m happy to get them in M&S if the fabric is good or to get them somewhere more expensive, or less expensive, I’ll see what’s out there and try a few things on.

I don’t want to comment on Angela Rayner wearing an unflattering dress or suit because really it’s inviting comment on her body not the dress. I doubt I’m the only one on here who has a standard middle aged body who would hate to be in the public eye having my physical looks picked apart while trying to do a very hard job.

Politicians aren’t like influencers or socialite celebs, actors or models with stylists, they’re working 24/7 basically hopefully for the good of the electorate. I positively wouldn’t want elected MPs to be spending loads of their time thinking up the most flattering outfit they can possibly find. I’d rather they just did the job. It’s also a particularly sexist factor against women politicians. Loads of male politicians at work look a mess or just wear the exact same suit for their entire careers (which is a sartorial sidestep of the whole issue men get to take) but they don’t get publicly slated for that.

well I wouldn’t buy those, but this is ‘style and beauty’ not ‘budgeting advice’. It’s the tendency for a load of people to rush in and say that’s too expensive, here’s a cheap option when that wasn’t what was being asked. ‘Anyone tried these sandals, are they comfortable?’ ‘OMG £150, here look at these £30 ones instead!’ People who want a dupe will ask. Otherwise it’s not your place to tell someone whether £100 for joggers is a pointless waste of their cash. IMO.

I was thinking the exact same thing, @PinkTonic. Different people have different price points. And in general, you get what you pay for - not just in terms of quality of fabric but cut, style etc. If your price point is lower, that's fine, but there's too much judgement of people who spend more.

As for the PPs who have complained about Me and Em being worn by politicians - bloody hell, if I could look as chic and elegant as Victoria Starmer (not a politician), I'd be absolutely thrilled. Not sure Angela Rayner's green suit was as flattering as some of her previous outfits but hey - her choice, and she looked happy and confident. I am loving seeing a stream of politicians who are not dressed in a suit and tie

KirstenBlest · 16/07/2024 11:20

I like a man to wear a shirt and tie. I didn't like Angela Rayner's trouser suit but she looked like she'd made an effort and she looked confident. I expect politicians to look presentable, which most seem to.
Two well-respected politicians not known for their style were Shirley Williams and Mo Mowlam. Women seem to be judged more for their appearance.
There was also Michael Foot's coat (NOT a donkey jacket at all) and Kenneth Clarke's shoes. A few others look(ed) like a sack of spuds but were wearing suits and ties so got away with it.

With the Me&Em joggers, if you like them and can afford them, then go for it.
They don't do it for me.
I wouldn't wear joggers outside the home, so M&S ones would be fine.

I don't seem to like Me&Em or Baukjen, the fabric seems heavy and a bit synthetic somehow. It might work when worn. It's not for me. I have a nice Baukjen sweatshirt but it's organic cotton so I can put up with it being slightly heavy.

Cantonet · 16/07/2024 12:24

There's an argument for buying the very best clothing you can afford for the items you wear the most. So if your office is smart casual or you work from home & live in these sorts of trousers then buy & invest in the high quality/better cut or just the ones that make you feel good. Don't spend a lot of money on one-off dresses for weddings & the like for one wear. Same with jeans if you live in them. I've always found Me & Em great quality.
