Bikini wax

I don't usually swim but now I am going to a holiday where I will wear swimsuit. I don't want to go to any salon to have bikini wax so what do you recommend I use for home wax. I checked Amazon but there are several products with different reviews.

I always go to a salon. It’s painful and the hot wax and speed of professionals makes it easier!

BippetyBoppetyBooHoo · 12/07/2024 15:17

Do you really think you can brace yourself to pull off the wax knowing it's going to hurt.

I've never heard of anyone waxing themselves down there.

If you're embarrassed to get it done somewhere just get a bikini wax rather than a Hollywood. That way you can keep your knickers on and they'll literally just wax the parts outside.

Precipice · 12/07/2024 15:47

Why not just accept that you have hair as an adult mammal and/or get a swimsuit that covers more, in the way that men do?

sweetpickle2 · 12/07/2024 16:00

I never get a wax, I just use the bikini line Veet. Just be careful where you put it, wait 5 mins, then rinse it off in the shower. So easy.

suki1964 · 13/07/2024 01:17

If you are brave enough, buy an epilator. I used one for years for the bikini area. Just remember to hold the skin very very taught

haypole · 24/07/2024 18:35

Bloody hell. I bought Veet sensitive skin wax strips. I put one on and managed to pull some hairs off but rest was a hair and wax mess. My skin looked awful after faxing, see below. Now I have instead of hairs bruised skin.

Bikini wax

Did you use a whole strip? You may find it easier to cut off say 1/3 or even 1/4 of a strip, and wax a smaller area at a time: I cut off a piece, stick it down firmly with the hairs pointing from one wax-free edge to the other, stroke a few times in the direction of hair growth, take the strip by the wax-free edge that the hairs point towards, hold skin taut and pull back sharply. Try to pull back rather than up. It takes time to get the hang of it but it is possible.

haypole · 24/07/2024 18:54

I had my underpants on so only one third of the strip was used. I don't understand why my skin looks so bruised.

UpUpUpU · 24/07/2024 18:57

Because you don’t know how to wax and have tried to do it in a very sensitive area!

I have had my waxing today. Full Hollywood. Honestly, she took the lot off in less that 15 minutes. Just the actual bikini line would be done in less than 5 and be for less painful.

BashfulClam · 24/07/2024 19:01

Yeah I did it myself and ended up black and blue, you didn’t pull it quick enough and probably pulled it out the way rather than back against itself. Go to a salon next time, it’s not that expensive and over in 5 minutes.

WhiteNegroni · 24/07/2024 19:05

It is a bit tricky and as PP said it’s not the easiest area to start practising on. Essentially you have to make sure the skin is as taut as possible: use the fingers of your other hand either side of the strip to pull the skin so it is taut and flat, pull tummy skin up - anything to minimise the strip itself pulling the skip up as you take it off. The second thing is to pull the strip off sharply, in the opposite direction to hair growth, and when you pull do it kind of horizontally back, almost parallel to the skin.

haypole · 24/07/2024 19:10

Thanks for the tips!

The Veet packet read that try with legs first if you haven't used wax strips before. I did my legs and the wax strips worked fine. So I thought I do the same with the bikini area. I didn't stretch my skin but did do the right direction. I will try again after my skin heals. It's quite sore.

Ive always done my own hair removal as I found getting it done "professionally" inconvenient , expensive and a lot of the time no better then I can do myself

I HATE VEET

You have bruises because you havent held your skin tight enough and its hard to do that when you are inexperienced . Legs, the skin is easy to pull tight, bikini area - not so, skin is generally a lot softer and looser

This is why I suggested an epilator, because you have more control . It can hurt, but its fleeting, and because its not a misplaced strip of wax, if you havent pulled the skin tight enough, its a tiny area, not a wax strip worth

Now Im a lot older and too busy and dont have a "beach body ready" lol body, I cheat, I wear longer legged swimsuits :) Cheaper and more comfortable

haypole · 27/07/2024 17:18

I got rest of the hair of by stretching the skin but it wasn't easy. I am fine for the holiday now but won't try again.

If you don’t want to go to a salon, use Veet at home instead of wax. Waxing at home is much harder than it might seem, whereas Veet is cream you leave on for 10 mins and it dissolves the hairs - it doesn’t stay hair free for as long as wax but if it’s just for a holiday that should be fine.

RampantIvy · 27/07/2024 17:25

I always get ingrown hairs wirh waxing so I have gone back to using the razor.

WetBandits · 27/07/2024 17:27

That’s what happens when you try and do something you have no idea how to do unfortunately!

Salon waxing is worth the initial embarrassment of getting naked for a stranger!

locket2009 · 27/07/2024 17:44

I've self waxed for around 6 years and would never use strips on my bikini line. Much easier and less painful to use hot wax even f it's a bit messier. You can buy it on Amazon and you basically let the wax set on a small area then pull skin tight and flick corner up and pull off. I think it would be hard to get the hang off it if you've never had it done before though.

I would honestly just go to a salon and get a high bikini wax. You'll be one of many so they won't be bothered in the slightest

suburburban · 27/07/2024 17:51

I managed this year but it did bruise a bit
.aloe gel afterwards

KnittedCardi · 27/07/2024 18:01

Maybe just shave?? I generally use a wet razor for good clean going over, then an electric for on holiday maintenance.

haypole · 27/07/2024 18:29

I am going away for two weeks to a summer cottage that doesn't have a shower and is very basic. After that I am going straight to camping for a week. I wanted a solution that lasts longer than shaving.

Not even a bath @haypole?

haypole · 27/07/2024 20:13

We have a huge pan we heat water buy burning logs. Cold water comes from the river. You mix the waters so that you have nice temperature then you pour the water on you.

OP posts:
TheFormidableMrsC · 27/07/2024 21:08

Just go and get it done by somebody professional. It's not expensive and is quick and largely pain free. I use a local lady with a home salon. It costs me a tenner. I made the mistake of using strips at home some years ago and looked like I'd been massacred. Never again.
