Will this 2nd degree burn leave a scar?

Will this burn leave a scar? How long does this usually heal? (Picture attached)

I spilled boiling coffee on my pants and it soaked it and pushed against my skin. It took me 5, minutes before rinsing it with running water.

It's a 2nd degree burn because it has blisters, on the first day of it the redness doesn't go away and it was alarming for me. The blisters popped but the redness is still there. The redness is getting darker and it never left.

Will this leave a scar? I really love my legs it hurt my heart. What should I do? can you give me advice?

this is how it looks like before and after, the after is 10 days after the burn.

Did you see your gp? If not then i think you should as burns need looking after. If may or may not scar depending on the depth of the burn. I had a third degree burn on my leg and had it dressed by a nurse regularly and it did scar.
Yours looks sore and i do feel for you.

I had something very similar when I was younger. It eventually faded to unnoticeable but I think took around two years. It's vitally important to moisturise and protect from sunlight - cover the area or wear Factor 50 suncream at all times until the skin has returned to a normal colour (and no harm in being careful for a number of years afterward) - this is what I was told by the burn clinic (though they did also say there could be a scar no matter what I did).

Once the skin is intact / blisters are healed, I don't imagine seeing the GP now will add much tbh. If you still have an open wound absolutely you should seek medical help though, that's a large area. Mine looked just like that (reddish brown and also sensitive to heat and touch) for many months before beginning to substantially fade very slowly. Can't see it at all now, literally just normal skin. I was very careful especially with sun exposure for many years.

This takes me right back to when I had a very similar accident when I was 14. I am now 46. Yes it virtually totally faded but took a few years and I think the fact I was young helped.

do see the GP if you haven’t already

the complication with mine was that one of the blisters “solidified” and never went away. I got it sliced out for cosmetic reasons after about 2 years though (it was on my arm). So I have a short scar from that but it’s very faint.

Ouch, that looks painful! Bless you op.

I agree about seeking some medical attention, it appears to cover quite a large surface area.

isthismylifenow · 12/07/2024 06:13

Gosh that looks incredibly painful.

A family member of mine had 3rd degree burns and it has healed up completely now. The only time we know the area was affected, is when it's really cold and that area will be a slightly different colour.

I assume you had medical treatment for this? They will let you know when you can start applying creams or anti scarring treatments.

Going forward, please always keep burn patches in your first aid kit. It's not something people think about as essential but they are.

My son got a 2nd degree burn on his palm. It was dressed by the nurses for two weeks. If it heals by 3 weeks it won’t scar I was told. It healed very quickly and didn’t scar.

blacksocks33 · 12/07/2024 06:51

A few years ago a hot water bottle exploded in my face and burnt all one side.
I had to have dressing on it for a couple weeks with silver dressing inside. The silver dressing was an absolute GAME changer!!!!
After the blisters and soars healed, they gave me some oil to roughly run into it twice a day to keep the blood going and help healing. The redness went entirely after a few months.

Hope you heal well OP, it I agree with others, I would get it checked out. They can really help you with your healing!

That looks incredibly painful. I do hope that you have sought medical attention for this burn OP.
You need to go to A&E for a burn any bigger than your hand.

I had a similar burn on my wrist from boiling water and a friend who recently had a nasty one on her leg advised the following to avoid scarring: keep covered with those burns plasters with hydrogel and after it's healed, apply retinol twice day, as strong as you can get hold of. I scar really badly and have no scar at all.

Not sure if you can get large enough covers for that though....

This is the most pointless advice ever to treat small burns. Keeping it moisturised with a fatty cream is key to reduce pain and scar. Never understood the point of the cling film unless you have a serious burn and need to protect it until you get to the hospital. Never understood why the NHS doesn't provide sensible advice for treating minor burns at home.....

focacciamuffin · 12/07/2024 10:44

Several years ago I spilt boiling oil on my bare feet when a pan handle broke. You can’t tell at all now but it did take a couple of years.

I think my burns may have been worse than yours so your skin may take a lot less time to recover. I had to keep my burns covered with some special sticky gauze for weeks. Once the skin had healed I didn’t use anything else.

Mamimiaa · 01/10/2024 08:45

@mumonthehill it already healed but left a hypopigmentation on the part that blistered, it's what I'm working on at the moment, thank you very much!!!

@Blobette I am trying my best to protect it from the sun, mine has a hypopigmentation on the part that blistered :( If you have scar cream recommendations though I doubt it will bring the pigmentation back huhu but thanks!!!

@Clearinguptheclutter your solidified blistered got me a little surprised, it's my first time hearing about that case I'm glad it healed. thank you for your advice
