If you work from home, or spend a lot of time at home for other reasons (chronic illness, etc,), how do you keep looking stylish and put-together?

As above.

I always get ready in the morning! Even when WFH I'll shower, wash / dry my hair and put on mascara or similar. I also pick outfits that are comfortable but also look nice, so matching gym style sets or linen shirts and leggings / shorts, that sort of thing. Comfy to sit in for 9 hours but if I answer the door no one is assuming I've broken in! I even wear perfume and jewellery when WFH because it makes me feel put together 😂

I think having matching / simple outfits, done hair and a little bit of makeup keeps my looking less troll like when wfh. For me it's all about personal grooming and simple clothes, I think taking the time to do my hair especially stops it from looking scruffy.

I am the same now. I just get ready for the day. I used to sit in my pjs or have a shower at lunchtime but it just meant then I felt skanky and also a bit panicked if I needed to do something. Now I have a quick shower daily, hair every two days, do the moisturiser, light make-up/none depending on what's on that day or how I feel, and then put on a semi-decent outfit. For me that would be good jeans or wide-legged trousers, strappy top, shirt, jewellery, perfume. Nothing tight or uncomfortable. Or dress, but more on days I go into work. It doesn't take that long and I feel ready for anything- so when I have to collect parcels at the door, or run down the shop, or a colleague wants a quick meeting in 5 min or the children need a lift, I can do that, and also socialise without having to do all that later in the day.

I didn't used to do this and now I do, and it's made life easier rather than harder.

I also think it helps your mind-set of being 'at work' at home, once I'm off duty for the day, I get in my PJs and watch TV! It helps distinguish times and stops the bleed of work into the rest of life.

Chronic illness here.

Not sure I would quite qualify as put together but...

I spend some time on Sundays planning ahead to help set myself up for the week as I really struggle in the mornings to find the time and energy to make enough of an effort.

I look at the weather forecast and pick out outfits for Monday - Friday, ironing what needs ironing and hanging them all up with underwear, accessories etc. I tend to go for wide leg trousers, jersey dresses and smart t-shirts. A necklace and or earrings make a small but significant difference.

Then I paint my nails and give my hair a deep conditioning treatment which helps minimise time needed for styling. If I can be bothered (rarely 😂) I'll put my hair in my daughters heat less curls thingy.

I’m not especially put together but I always shower and get dressed in clean clothes once ds has left for school so that when I log on I’m actually in work mode.
Still sometimes in leggings and a sweatshirt but they’re clean and what I could wear into the office anyway. I mean usually I wear something a bit nicer because I have lots of really nice clothes and I feel more productive when I look the part if that makes sense but I definitely have the odd day where I’m dressed very down - and even then, I’m showered with clean teeth and hair is up.
I don’t bother with make up as I rarely wear any in my normal life but I generally spray a bit of perfume.

I'm disabled and don't work so I'm at home most of the time
Think about what you feel comfortable in and up style it a little
For me I need firm material so I wear skinny jeans and a cotton( not jersey) popover blouse
If you like soft clothing you could wear wide jersey bottoms/ Tapered jersey trousers or drawstring trouser with a fitted or loose top
I always wear lipstick and perfume and have freshly washed hair
Basically a smarter version of your comfort zone

Not in the least bit stylish, but I feel I can face the world

RomanRoysSearchHistory · 11/07/2024 16:01

I fit into both categories. I don't bother when at home, however my main cheat is to wear nice coats/jackets when leaving the house.
Everything else can be lounge wear/a disaster but I just cover it with a nice coat, co-ordinating shoes/bag and sunglasses.
Never fails.

Following for tips. I try to keep on top of haircuts and brows maintenance but don’t have the energy or budget for any more really.

I kept a few smart jumpers by my home desk when it was cold because I was moving less and working in a colder room than I would do in my office at work, and was getting really cold. Wapping myself in a blanket wasn’t ideal for work Zoom calls.

000Zer0 · 11/07/2024 16:24

Lol, I don’t 😂
However at the beginning of this year I started to make a concerted effort to try to
do so and am succeeding in this 80% of the time!
For me it means very simple things - I had my (long, unruly) hair cut by a brilliant stylist who knew what they were doing into a shorter style which actually looks like a style without really needing any styling except for a quick blast of the fringe after a wash. I have a quick shower when I get up, or if I am expecting to not want to do that in the morning I will have a more luxurious shower the night before with some nice s. gel etc followed by lotion and an eyebrow pluck, paint my nails if I’m in the mood.
I got myself a tinted moisturiser and eyebrow pencil & gel - this alongside mascara and a lip tint takes five mins to apply but makes me feel groomed without feeling ‘done up’.
I wear a pair of earrings every day (just some casual hoops, but they look nice against my hair colour) and my glasses suit me.
I dress fairly comfy and casual but always clean and in flattering colours. I no longer buy things that crease!
I know these are all pretty simple and basic but honestly this routine has done wonders for me confidence-wise.

@MavisTheMonkey you and I sound v. similar!

WeRateSquirrels · 11/07/2024 17:01

Always shower and put on proper clothes (usually put something out the night before). Also do make up, even if only a little bit. I have an on camera meeting every morning at 9, so that's my deadline for looking presentable. I would HATE to be sat working in PJs or even leggings/joggers.

Outfits are either jeans and t-shirt or a dress, with knitwear if needed (so almost always!). Leave my stud earrings in nearly all the time and put a necklace on if the neckline is right. Hair just gets combed as I'm no good with hair. Nails always done.

For me, leggings, hoodies and trainers are for exercise, but I think I'm just old.
