Gummy Smile Botox problem - pic included.

Hi all,

(Name changed due to pics).

Had a top up of my Botox a few weeks ago, always have a bit put in just under my nose to treat a gummy smile. This last appointment she said she was going to put a tiny bit more in another place (still very close to the usual injection site) for a reason (can’t remember what it was).

I just saw some photos from last night and I’m not sure if I’ve got a bit of a problem with the area just below and lateral to my nostrils, and into the nasolabial fold. It looks kinda chipmunky/ or like one of the Who’s of Whoville from the grinch.

Anyone know what muscle is involved in this? Or if it’s a known pitfall of treating that area of the face? (Like needing to treat the bunny lines, for example, after having your forehead done). I will speak to my injector, but would like to do some reading first.

I don’t need any comments about the rights or wrongs of getting Botox, I understand all of that and I am a capacitous consenting adult fully understanding the risks.

thank youuuuu.

Without seeing what it was like before it’s very difficult to tell, but I think it looks fine.

Kittea · 11/07/2024 12:24

Yeah I concur it looks fine. I think the chipmunk look comes from filler. I wouldn’t notice anything amiss with your face OP.

BowlOfNoodles · 11/07/2024 12:30

You look gorgeous I see no issues here.

WhoOfWhoville · 11/07/2024 12:35

Thanks everyone.

I’ve included a pic of how it normally looks so that you can see the difference. I now seem to now have two little bumps/lines.

It’s not a big deal, and I know it will wear off, I just wanted to understand what was happening (whether another muscle is now overcompensating) so I can make sure it doesn’t happen next time.

I can see what you mean, I'd definitely ask and be interested to know what she's done differently.
You still look amazing though and it's not really noticeable.

Thank you for the replies so far, and your very kind comments.

Change your username as you don’t look like that :)

Botox is looking fab on you - just be mindful of your right eyebrow at your next top up - you don’t want the Kylie look!

Epicaricacy · 11/07/2024 15:07

Don't mention this to anyone in real life, because until you do, they won't notice.
You look beautiful before and after.

Hope you find a specialist nurse who can answer!

Hahah, I know about that rogue brow. In truth I’ve not gone back to get it looked at as I quite like being able to do The Rock’s eyebrow at people and it makes my DP laugh 🤣

Yeah can see what you're talking about op, so in your shoes I'd want to avoid next time. At least it's temporary. Can't shred any light on the anatomy reasons though sorry.

Looks perfectly nice, and you are SO PRETTY!!!! 😍

EasternStandard · 11/07/2024 15:31

I can only see a small bump if I try but what was it it you wanted to fix?

I can’t see anything in the original pic

The second picture is with my normal “gummy smile” Botox, the pics in the first post are after my most recent treatment where these little bumps have appeared that aren’t there usually.

I haven’t posted a photo of my untouched/pre Botox face. But I have the Botox because when I do a full smile my top lip recedes quite significantly leaving me with a lot of gum on show above my teeth.

I can see it because you've highlighted the area but not sure how noticeable the bumps are in real life.

Could it be a build up if you regularly have cosmetic work done? Or perhaps something to do with facial muscles as suggested. You look fine btw, and personally I'd be cautious of any one doing work on you who's trying to push more and more - you see some real horror stories where people have so much work done that it's really obvious and they look very different to their natural, pre-work look

Botox doesn’t build up like filler can, in fact my understanding is that you’re likely to need more units over time as the muscles become less responsive to it. I don’t have any filler at the moment. Last thing I had was my tear troughs about two years ago, and I’ve never had anything in this area around my nose/mouth.

She wasn’t really pushing for me to do anything else, it was that she thought it would enhance the result but still formed part of the same procedure and with no extra charge associated.

I’m very conscious of avoiding the over-done look, it’s really not what I’m going for. I’ve no desire for huge lips or cheeks, etc. I just want to look fresh, healthy and well rested.

Well don't have a gummy smile at all. Your teeth are fully visible which I thought was a good thing!
I would change Botox person to an experienced Dentist Botox practitioner as they know the most about the anatomy of the face.

Plus don't obsess as it is NOT noticeable unless you are looking in a magnifying mirror

Pinkclarko · 12/07/2024 06:17

I do t think you have a gummy smile, but that’s just my opinion. I had Botox for mine, and I think what’s happening here is that it changes your face so much you just can’t get used to the new real estate above your too lip. It made my smile look really insincere and weird afterwards and I didn’t have it done again. Yours looks good though, before and after!

MulberryBushRoundabout · 12/07/2024 06:22

I can see what you’re talking about - absolutely would not have noticed if I wasn’t looking very closely to see what you were talking about though! I am not a Botox expert, but it doesn’t seem like the extra she’s tried has had any beneficial effect, so you would probably be fine just having your normal next time.

lolly792 · 12/07/2024 14:49

I have a thin top lip and worry about the gummy look but I think I do a pretty good job with lipliner to give my top lip a little more emphasis. I've always been a bit nervous of going down the route of getting work done on my face! But I agree with the pp that I would stick with whatever work you have done usually because the extra bit around your nose hasn't been an improvement. I probably wouldn't notice if you hadn't highlighted in the picture so I don't think it's too bad either - but why pay more if it's not a benefit?
