What’s the best way to help your nails grow?

Mine are terrible. They keep splitting from the side down below the quick, very painful..
I’ve already tried various things, Nail Envy, Nailtiques, OPI Repair mode, Sally Hanson Maximum Growth, the OPI nail oil etc but nothing seems to stop this happening as soon as they get the tiniest bit of length. I’m on thyroid treatment for low thyroid, recent blood test shown correct dose, but I know this is a factor.

Castor oil is good for nails, vaseline also

AutumnFroglets · 09/07/2024 19:27

You need something with biotin in it. My DD swears by these but I'm sure you can get a supermarket own brand for cheaper.

Thank you. I’m willing to try anything

Vitamin D supplements!! What's on the inside fixes them better than stuff you paint on the outside!

Builder gel manicures, from a good salon. My nails are like steel after a year

This 100%. I have been taking vitamin D tablets (1000 iu) for about a year now, and I have really noticed the difference in my nails.
I get mine from Tesco…cheap as chips. They also sell 2000 iu, tho I have never felt the need myself.

AnneLovesGilbert · 09/07/2024 20:11

Have you ever had your b12 checked? I don’t absorb it so have regular injections and my nails are pretty much unbreakable.

Overtheatlantic · 09/07/2024 20:13

Honestly get a manicure. It will cut back your cuticles and nourish the whole nail. Nail technicians will have seen worse than yours. In two weeks time you will be amazed by how wonderful they look.

MartyFunkhouser · 09/07/2024 20:13

I have good nails, always have had. I don’t do anything other than a weekly (diy) manicure.

But the one thing I never do is so much as pick up a wet cloth without rubber gloves.

Eat steak!

Peony15 · 09/07/2024 20:26

My nails are similar, I like this blogger and her review caught my eye as I'm a fan of OPI products in general.

Wow, kid not, 1 week in and nails look amazing.
They feel rock solid. First time in my adult life managed not to wear any polish either as nails looked so good, normally wear just Nail Envy.
100% recommend.

Pyaar · 09/07/2024 20:27

Since i stopped applying any nail strengthening treatment (or any other polish) , and have been soaking nails in oil for 5-10 mins when i can, mine have significantly improved. They used to peel so badly but now i can grow them with a bit of length and i noticed improvements within a few weeks so could be worth trying, it's not much to invest in.

Peony15 · 09/07/2024 20:28

sorry OP just saw you tried it already and it didn't work 😔

JennyfromtheBlok · 09/07/2024 20:29

Yes. Cheap as chips Vitamin D

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 09/07/2024 20:32

I take Hunter Gatherer collagen powder and my nails have never been better. I was sceptical and I thought the stuff might be hyped up but to be fair, the whole winter, no breakage. Normally they get shredded at some point in the season. My nails now are super strong even when quite long.

PumpkinSpice24 · 09/07/2024 20:32

Cuticle oil every day (twice a day in winter) , body shop do a amazing almond oil one that looks abit like a pen/ paintbrush that's perfect for keeping in your work/ handbag. This one is also great - amzn.eu/d/0hTbwHUH for keeping on your desk/ bedside table/ coffee table whilst you're watching tv etc.

a good nourishing hand cream too.

BIAB is best nail treatment for stronger nails and improving the nail bed

Use gloves when washing up/ using cleaning products, basically too much water or hand sanitizer can dehydrate them so always follow up with cuticle oil after washing hands etc.

Try not to open things with your nails either as that will just undo all your hard work lol

Vitamin D is also a good supplement to take to improve nail strength

Nails grow out from the cuticle so the stronger/ more hydrated they are at the top, when that grows out to the bottom of the nail you'll see the results / progress.

Biotin tablets and cnd rescue topical.certain to work.

wefly · 09/07/2024 20:32

High protein diet

ChocolateTea · 09/07/2024 20:37

Tbh I’ve tried everything and nothing worked for me. I have a few health issues which probably haven’t helped. But I started getting SNS once a month and now love my hands and nails. It’s not a great long term solution, but it has meant I don’t have sore or split nails anymore

Darklane · 09/07/2024 20:45

Oh gosh, so much to try. Thank you so much. I’ve never had my B12 tested though get annual general bloods for thyroid, cholesterol & liver etc & don’t take vitamin D so that’s something I need to start. I’m also very bad at remembering rubber gloves for washing up & cleaning so I’ve need to get into better habits.
I’ve ordered some biotin tablets & a myleen lamp & kit, I can’t really get to a salon easily as live a bit remote rurally but am going to try your other suggestions so thank you so much.

Vitamin D

Zippedeedooda · 09/07/2024 20:52

Get out in the sun and take vitamin D, C and biotin supplements.
Watch out re overdosing on vitamin D and take it as a joint supplement with K3. If you overdose on vitamin D it can be toxic.

I took D and K3 during covid but read the label wrong. I was supposed to take one every 5 days but took one every day. A year later getting my bloods checked the GP couldn’t stop looking at my vitamin D result and told me to stop taking the supplement. It wasn’t till I got home that I re read the dose instructions 😳
