What can you do with hideous earrings?

DH decided to go off piste with my birthday present (despite me dropping several hints and straight out saying I'd like "x")

And today I open the most awful pair of earrings - he got them from a vintage shop so no chance of a refund or exchange
And I think they were .over £100 ugh!

I'm so disappointed and so cross at the waste of money! They are just nothing i'd ever wear

He is in a grump at me being ungrateful (which I know I am!) and I also think he's cross with himself as he thought they were smaller than they are and once I put them in he realised they weren't what he thought they'd be

But what can you do with a pair of earrings that you know you won't ever wear
(Big garnet studs the size of peas that droop forward out of my ears as they are so big)

Back to saving again for the handbag I really wanted or the jacket I really need

Make me feel better or kick me up the arse for being a miserable cow!

Vinted!

Aquamarine1029 · 08/07/2024 01:48

A picture of said earrings is needed, obviously.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 08/07/2024 01:52

Can the stones be reset into something else?
Otherwise, all you can do is sell them on.

Cardencallr · 08/07/2024 02:03

Don't throw more money at them. Happened to me too. They live in a drawer. My DH is crap at presents so I buy my own now and tell him to wrap them. Particularly so after I got a bottle of liqueur I don't drink and some crisps one year (I cried).

BettyBardMacDonald · 08/07/2024 02:26

I believe it is possible to buy specialty backings that will prevent the earrings from flopping forward.

Honestly, it's outside of my experience to let the giver know of any disappointment. If their efforts were heartfelt, why make them feel like shit?? No one is owed gifts let alone perfect flawless gifts. Isn't it the sentiment that counts?

nzeire · 08/07/2024 03:10

Ha! Well good thing you didn’t pretend to like them! I did that one year and used to put them on every now and again as not to hurt his feelings.

he gave me the exact same pair a couple of years later!

mondaytosunday · 08/07/2024 03:26

Sell them on. You could try and exchange them though - why assume the shop won't take them back?
Brave letting him know - my husband got me a present once he was so chuffed about. It was not at all my taste. Luckily it was not a wearable item so just kept it in the bedroom.

PaminaMozart · 08/07/2024 03:35

Go to the shop where he bought them and tell them how you love the look of the earrings but they are simply too heavy for your ears...... they hurt soooo much..... PLEASE could they possibly change them for you... If you can tear up ever so slightly, without overegging the custard...

Thank you - needed this reminder to stop being a spoilt brat. Have woken up to my self!

He did think he was getting something lovely

I will maybe see if the shop will exchange (worth a shot?)

And I will be much more careful in future

FFS!' Is not being spoilt to say you don't like an unsuitable gift.

Why do you have to be grateful for something you don't want? It's hardly being thoughtful to ignore the clear option of something you need and/or want.

A picture would be useful. They might be able to be reset as a pendant and a charm.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 08/07/2024 13:31

I'm biased but I think garnets are lovely. I've been googling garnet stud earrings and couldn't find any I didn't like !

You might surprise yourself. I have one pair of earrings I hated at first but they really grew on me. (Not literally obviously)

OolongTeaDrinker · 08/07/2024 13:43

They sound like they would look like two big drops of blood on your ears if I am picturing them correctly!
Why not get the stones set in a ring or pendant instead?

BettyBardMacDonald · 08/07/2024 13:44

FWIW, I love garnets above all other stones, but they aren't perhaps the best summer jewelry.

They work great with denim and sweaters and such in fall and winter, and for Christmas/New Year events.

They may grow on you as those seasons approach. And look for the specialty earring backers; can't recall what they are called but they balance out the flopping.

Moveoverdarlin · 08/07/2024 13:46

Earrings are a stupid thing to buy as a present as they’re pretty much the only thing you can’t take back.

similarminimer · 08/07/2024 17:29

If they're already vintage then the taking back thing isnt such an issue - why dont you take them to the shop and see if you can exchange them for something?

Petrine · 08/07/2024 19:11

If they’re from a vintage shop they’re obviously pre-owned and so hopefully you’ll be able to exchange them.

jewellery is such a personal thing it’s so easy to get it wrong… hopefully now that your husband can see for himself they’re unsuitable he’ll take your hints onboard next time.

Good luck - I hope you find something that you really like!

Allezallez · 08/07/2024 20:12

Could be worse OP. My DH bought me some unwanted earrings and I don't even have pierced ears.
