I need to start switching over my make-up to non-toxic products to help reduce my exposure to various chemicals (trying to get on top of various health issues) - can anyone recommend some tried and tested brands for things like mascara, eyeshadow, BB / CC cream, primer, lipstick.. 🤗🤗🤗

Try looking at brands like ilia, RMS Beauty, Lily Lolo, 100% Pure. The website Naturisimo sticks all these and would be a good place to look as it focuses on clean beauty.

I'd be checking where you're getting your information. There's nothing dangerous in cosmetics. For instance you say you want to avoid parabens but they're there to stop the product going off.

EllaPaella · 07/07/2024 17:17

Have you heard of the app Yuka OP? It's really good. You can scan the bar code of the product and it will tell you how good it is in terms of non toxic chemical content and all the chemicals that are in there. They have recommendations as well. I spent about an hour in Boots last week scanning hair products, deodrants and various beauty products.

Phthalates are an endocrine disruptor found in some cosmetics.

Some cosmetics can be and are dangerous, please don't say things that you don't know. www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2024-02-07/are-pfas-in-skin-care-shampoo-why-forever-chemicals-are-still-everywhere

OP, I'm trying more and more to stop buying cosmetics made in China, which is incredibly tricky since all cosmetics companies own processing plants over there. L'Oréal owns 4 processing plants there and they own pretty much over half of all cosmetic brands on the market.

China are know to use heavy metals and forever chemicals in its cosmetics manufacturing. So, when I see on a label "Created in the UK, Made in China" or "Made in China with UK/EU products" I know that the product will be made in a plant that uses all sorts and there may be cross contamination. Some information is completely missing or even misleading because we don't know all the steps in the supply chain. For example, you buy a beautiful Lancôme lipstick or a nice foundation that says "Made in France". However, Lancôme is owned by L'Oréal, so how can you believe that that particular product was actually made in France?

I absolutely love makeup but I've been researching like mad for things that are made in the EU because Europe has stronger regulations when it comes to cosmetics. I include nails in this too as a lot of people are having more allergic reactions to brands made in China which contain unsafe levels of methacrylate and hema (hema itself isn't the problem, the problem is unsafe levels of it).

I would download the INCI Beauty app which lists all the ingredients for a product. If you see something you don't like in the list, then you don't buy it.

Having said all that, some of the ingredients that you listed are not used anymore, no one uses lead in cosmetics in this day and age. Talc is less and less used too. But your list very restrictive and sometimes something's gotta give. Good luck!

I forgot to add: there's not one brand fits all. I mean, you will really have to research product by product because sometimes brands have different products made in different places and containing different ingredients. There's no magic formula here.
However, Kiko is a brand that is entirely made in the EU (or so they say). Inglot is Polish but some of their eyeshadows were found to contain forever chemicals in them a while ago. Like I said, you will have to research individually for all the ingredients for each single product. A pain in arse? Yes, but better be safe than sorry

Thank you @BetsyBobbin your posts are really insightful.💡

Thanks @EllaPaella I will get the Yuka app, good reminder as I used to use this and had forgotten about it!

Face Theory. If you order their foundation and get the wrong shade they will send (for free) a replacement in another shade. Amazing face products too

PoisedOrca · 20/02/2025 17:26

Try Found clean Beauty (new uk company). All their products are individually screened and they only stock makeup, skincare etc with no toxins in them

Anything on mypure.co.uk - I particularly like Benecos
