What do you wear for travel?

I'm going on holiday at the beginning of August. I'm flying to from london to Venice, and then taking private boat transfer to a fairly upmarket hotel.

What do I wear? I'd usually go for comfort (black lulu lemon yoga leggings and a tshirt and trainers) but I'm thinking that will look too scruffy for my arrival in Venice. It could be cold and rainy in London, but probably sunny in Venice. I want to look stylish, but not arrive crumpled from travel.

Anyway, what do you wear for air travel? Any outfit inspiration welcome.

I always wear a dress or skirt because the thought of trousers or leggings potentially touching the pee soaked ground of airplane or airport toilets gives me the ew.
The last flight in April I wore a nice midi skirt from M&S, a vest top, and loose denim shacket with a bomber in my carry on. In September I’m planning on a maxi (I’m tall so doesn’t drag on the ground) black dress from hush, and a black textured bomber from Zara. October probably very similar to April!

Venice in August will be around 28c. It will be heaving with tourists wearing the sort of clothes tourists wear in a city heaving with tourists when the temperature is 28c

No one will notice what you're wearing when you arrive at the airport or the hotel.

Unless you've booked a porter to collect you, you walk for what seems like miles, in the airport building carrying your luggage to get to the waterfront where the water taxis and water bus are. The water taxis/ private boat transfers aren't anything grand or glamourous. I stayed at The Danieli in May, can't remember what I wore on the flight-probably a cotton or linen dress from Oska.

What you've thought of is fine. Have fun.

If you want to go to St. Mark's Basilica or the Doge's Palace book "skip the line" entry tickets in advance.

Thanks. We have arranged a meet and greet, so a driver will drive us and our luggage from arrivals to the private dock to take a private boat transfer directly to our hotel. We are staying at the excelsior on Lido, which has it's own dock so it shouldn't be heaving thankfully.

The hotels have their own docks and they won't be heaving. The hotel will have its doormen to help you off the water taxi but honestly I wouldn't worry about what you wear to get there. Whatever is comfortable.

I really don’t think it matters what you wear on the flight.

For a short flight like that, I’d probably wear jeans and a vest with a blazer.

I love your username 😅 I was almost Bam Bam Funkhouser, but went for a niche star trek reference instead.

it depends how you are with the heat. In summer I have to forego my usual leggings because I can’t do with hiking up staircases and cobbled streets feeling like there’s no air, so yesterday’s flight for eg I wore black shorts and a nice tee, trainers and an oversized denim jacket that could be tucked in my backpack. In the event of freezing temps on the plane the denim jacket makes a surprisingly decent blanket.

Even in the nicest of hotels there will be very little judgement over how you arrive, particularly in the middle of summer.

I travelled in jeans, white vest and navy blazer with tan loafers and tan LV Neverfull when we went to Venice - the private boat transfer is fantastic. We stayed at the Danieli which I think was a 5 star, there was a complete mix of casual to smartly dressed people, lots of trainers too - I wish I'd worn mine to travel in!

Just wear regular clothes suitable for hot weather.
I don't get the thing on Mumsnet about having to have special outfits for travelling by plane. It's just a form of transport.

morellamalessdrama · 06/07/2024 07:43

I usually wear something like loose khaki chinos and a silk vest top with a jumper. I always get cold on the place but don't like to be overheated when stepping out of the airport so a jumper is a must.

This. Unless you have some tame paparazzi on standby to capture your arrival nobody is going to notice you.

Have you checked out Rohan lately? Clothes/fabrics used are perfect for travelling and the staff couldn't be more helpful.

I haven't heard of Rohan, I'll have a look, thanks.

Can I just do a blanket response to the "who cares what you wear" responses.

  1. I do. I like to look stylish and put together every day. But I like comfort when I fly.

  2. I'm genuinely interested in what others wear for travel. Outfit inspiration or brands I haven't heard of.

  3. this is style and beauty. Discussing outfits is our raison d'etre.

Trousers you are comfy in but feel smart in and will do for evenings out and about. Venetian Mozzies are terrible so you'll appreciate leg coverage.

A silk shirt or top (can be washed out in the sink if necessary and ironed)

A cashmere sweater for the plane which you can take off and tie around your shoulders in the boat and at Reception.

Good sunglasses

Good bag.

I don't know what it is, but the jumper round the shoulders look with sunglasses always looks upmarket to me

RubiesandRose · 06/07/2024 15:58

My go to travel outfit is a pair of Lucy Dodwell ultimate joggers in stone, supergra plimsolls, light t-shirt and then a linen or soft cotton bomber on top for the plane. LV cross body bag and I'm ready to fly!

Mumofyellows · 06/07/2024 19:12

Last year, and planned for this year (Croatia both times, this year with water taxi involved!) shorts and shirt co-ord, linen blend vest, Birkenstocks. Comfy, cool, looks nice!

Worldgonecrazy · 06/07/2024 19:41

I always wear flat shoes and natural fibres when flying (for safety). If going somewhere smart I would go for lightweight jeans, loafers, silk vest and lightweight blazer/jacket, all in dark colours.

<light hearted> You will know you’ve hit the jackpot when you’re addressed in a language other than English - if they think you’re Italian it will be the ultimate compliment 😎

Prototyper · 06/07/2024 19:54

I usually wear loose linen/cotton trousers but ankle length, (barrel shape) so they aren’t trailing on the floor.
A fitted vest top with a shirt thrown over the top, then a jumper over my shoulders, as I sometimes get abit chilly on flights. The jumper also acts as a nice cushion if I roll it up.
Footwear is either Boston birks or comfy trainers.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 07/07/2024 13:41

I love clothes, I love dressing up and spend ages planning what I wear, but for getting on a plane I pick something not new, something comfortable, something I don't worry about if there are delays and I'm stuck wearing it for ages, or that I'll spill something on it.
