Work clothes on a budget for Size 4 DD

DD is 5'7, a size 4, a 28 A bust ( if that), basically very slim and slight and tall-ish. ( Please don't bring up eating disorders and anorexia. We are Asian and our entire family is built that way).

She is looking for office clothes for a work placement, but none fit right. She prefers trousers and a shirt to a dress. She is also on a budget so she just ordered some clothes from Uniqlo, New Look and Zara, standard grey trousers white shirt kind of thing.

But none fit right.
Trousers:
If they fit her waist, they are too short in the leg, and if they are long enough, they don't fit her tiny waist.
Tops and shirts: Just too big around the bust and drown her!

Out of work, she wears huge drawstring cargoes and teeny tiny crop tshirts.

Where do your very slim DDs shop? Chinese stuff on Amazon or Shein would probably fit right but be very poor quality. I am not that keen on Vinted as it confuses me ( and her).

I feel like one of those poufy floral dresses would be easier to fit and acceptable in her office, but she wants to look "smart".

Don't get me started on office shoes for a very narrow foot!

Primark go down to a size 4. Not sure what the length is like though.

How about ASOS or Topshop online? Similar quality to New Look, in that it may not last a lifetime but certainly good enough for a placement.

Maybe shift dresses could work? They would just skim over her waist.

H&M always do quite good work wear (although the skirts are teeny) and they do a 4 which seems true to size (DD's size too)

Lentilweaver · 04/07/2024 13:04

H and M is her usual go to but she didn't go for them this time, no idea why!
I think shift dresses would actually work v well but she seems resistant.
Will remind her of Topshop. Had forgotten it existed!

If you know anybody that can sew/have a local seamstress it may be better to get the correct length stuff adjusted at the waist.

ebay may be a good shot- lots of people sell old office clothes on there still as well as vinted.

henlake7 · 04/07/2024 14:11

As previous poster suggested she might be better off finding someone who does alterations and having things taken in (alot of dry cleaners seem to offer this service).

Yerroblemom1923 · 04/07/2024 14:15

What about a smart dress, with a belt if necessary?

TemuSpecialBuy · 04/07/2024 14:16

hmmm surprised Zara and mango trousers come up short

I would maybe try taking a look on vinted…

Lentilweaver · 04/07/2024 18:05

Think she either has to go to Westfield and take 4 hrs to try everything on or find a seamstress. I used to have the same problem in my early 20s. Manufacturers assume that if you are very slim you must also be petite.

Anyway she has come home and said everybody was in jeans. She does have jeans that fit so maybe those with a button down shirt.

Poor teeny tiny daughter. I'm sure she will find some clothes somewhere

Did you mean to sound so bitchy?

CormorantStrikesBack · 04/07/2024 21:13

Dd is very petite, between a 4 and a 6. It is really hard to find clothes actually. I remember with her first job taking her to Next and no trousers were small enough. She has found some stuff at ASOS

TheCompactPussycat · 04/07/2024 21:15

My DD is 5'5" and barely a size 4, with long legs.

I would suggest looking at Hollister. For lots of their trousers you can choose leg length as well as waist size.

Otherwise, DD has found Stradivarius and Bershka good.

Partridgewell · 04/07/2024 21:17

DD was a very similar size in Sixth Form and had to wear smart business dress. ASOS and Monki were her go-to choices.

ADHDHDHDHD · 04/07/2024 21:26

What about school uniform clothes? They should be designed for slim but tall? Age 16 might be worth trying

Lentilweaver · 05/07/2024 08:31

Thanks everyone. Some useful suggestions. I am sure she can find something. Sizing is so weird these days.
