What embellishments make stuff look posher?

Like, if you had a nice but plain T shirt, or dead boring jacket, what embellishments look good?

(I’ve asked my witless kids and the best suggestion so far has been Pokémon patches. No.)

Jewellery

Doesnt have to be expensive, I buy lots from Temu. Right now Im wearing a pair of earrings that cost less then a quid and I had 4 or 5 compliments on them, no one noticed I was wearing my dog walking coat where the zip is broken, just noticed the earrings

Temu uses slave labour. How else do you think they can afford to sell jewellery for a pound. It’s gross people are suffering so you can have a large collection of jewellery.

I’ve got a plain navy jacket from M£S or similar and I’ve edged it in tiny seed beads and changed the buttons and it looks totally different. But I’m not very creative so it was that sort of thing I was looking for ideas of.

I'm sure that looks more creative but it won't look "posher".

Notjoinedup · 02/07/2024 07:48

Maybe I mean more creative then. Just a bit more personality.

Fuck I sound all “live laugh love.” Ugh.

I don't know why people are being so harsh - I do think embellishments can make something look posher. Etsy has some beautiful patches to sew on.
Although if you go for accessories and are wearing something quite plain - wear a big brooch. They instantly elevate an outfit and make them look less ordinary

Parrotcoop · 02/07/2024 07:52

I agree with PPs, simple and unembelished is much classier

You do you and Ill do me

Artisfun · 02/07/2024 08:12

You can buy lace collars / lace necklaces which I think look nice or try a lace trim under the lapels of a jacket

Artisfun · 02/07/2024 08:14

You can rent Hermes scarves apparently

KatPurrson · 02/07/2024 08:30

I think you might mean trimmings not embellishments OP.

From subtle things like little ribbon loops with tiny press studs in the inside of a top at the shoulders to loop round bra straps so everything sits nicely. Or grosgrain ribbon on the inside of a boat neck to keep the line.

Or little weights (beads or chain) sewn into the hem of a jacket or skirt to maintain the line and hang.

A little bit of velvet ribbon here and there on the outside to add depth and ensure a seam stays straight. Maybe as a placket on a cardigan.

Nice buttons. Tiny hidden press studs in
between buttons to avoid gaping.

Garments being properly lined in a nice fabric that looks good if a brief flash of it shows.

A little ribbon pull at the top of a zip.

Basted edges. A ruffle here and there. A little bit of eyelash ace at the top of a camisole. Frugging, tippets, satin bias binding.

KingOfPoundbury · 02/07/2024 08:35

One finds a Crown sets the scene best.

Although hardly an 'embellishment' more 'de rigueur'.

Yes! Yes! I’m obsessed with trimmings! I have a collection of them and I get them out and reorganise them and think about what they might enhance! I used to be like this as a child with scented erasers but I’ve upgraded!

They’re all nice ideas. I like embroidered edges too. And picolt edging.

A what? Like headwear? Even I think that might not work. Anyway surely a diadem is preferable. I have been married and am therefore allowed to wear a tiara should the occasion call for it.

Expensive but battered shoes. Expensive not battered bag. All rich people I know in Europe.
America is different.

Recuperation7 · 02/07/2024 11:33

Anyone else going to Google the term "frugging" 😀 ?

Notjoinedup · 02/07/2024 11:40

I just looked that up!!! What tosh!
im a slightly impoverished Sen mum and unless my hands stay busy I get anxious so adding sparkly stuff etc keeps me off the streets/drugs! Frug my arse! Anyway I just painted the buttons on my cardigan with gold nail varnish and it looks less shit than you’d think!

But if your clothes are mass-produced and polyester, nylon or other non-natural fabric types, and not tailored or (subtly) fitted to your body, or not lined, or made with skimpy amounts if fabric, then no amount of trimming will make them look "posh."

For those of us who know about fabric and good tailoring, it's pretty easy to spot polyester instead of wool or cotton, viscose instead of linen, polyester/nylon instead of silk ...

I'm sorry but ultimately, the "secret" of "looking posh" is being posh ...

Recuperation7 · 01/07/2024 21:26

I'd query why you want to look "posher" op but each to their own!

Model a Parisian woman.

Good quality, carefully chosen accessories help like a leather belt with a buckle that matches either gold or silver jewellery.

A good haircut that is smooth and low key but well cut and glossy and off your face. Not too "red" or dyed but more low key ash tones depending on your natural colour but try and stick to as natural as possible.

Some plain, classic earrings and maybe a discreet necklace and watch.

Good quality sunglasses and handbag.

Stick to three classic colours like: stone or tan, navy or black, and white.

Maybe a silk scarf? Or a light cashmere jumper around your shoulders?

Classic leather shoes that have lowish heels?

Have clothes altered to fit.

Agree about changing high street buttons for something better quality.

Pale pink well manicured nails, or French manicure.

Jeans that really fit well.

Natural discreet make up.

Everything ironed, repaired, clean, neat, polished and considered (unlike me who gets dressed in 5 mins flat without looking in the mirror).

Appropriate clothes for weather and location. Nothing too frilly or flouncy or shiny but low key and well fitted.

No obvious logos.

This all sounds so dull 😭

ladygindiva · 02/07/2024 13:40

Yes. That's because it is all quite dull. Parisian women tend to be quite conformist in their dressing.

And I was addressing op's question, about making her clothes look posher; not advising on how to make her fashion sense more dynamic and lively, which was not the question.

Generally speaking, it's much easier to "get away with" high street copies of designer clothing if the item in question is plain, one colour and unembellished.

KatPurrson · 02/07/2024 15:14

@Notjoinedup @Recuperation7
Mistyped frogging, apologies

Tilly22222 · 02/07/2024 15:17

I have a friend who resews the buttons on everything she buys as loose buttons look cheap- sewing them properly so they sit well makes a big difference. She resews hems as well. Not really embellishments but ways to make a cheap item look more expensive with minimal cost.

I agree with that one. And changing the buttons. I've got a denim dress from Monsoon I keep meaning to do that with. The buttons are horrendous.

Agreed. Don't take any risks. Don't wear anything that stands out. Don't wear anything fun. Don't wear anything that shows you have a personality. Very dull. And I'm not sure the OP is looking for dull.

Having read backwards from your later posts, I don't think you've got a shortage of personality. And I'm not sure if "posh" in the sense of dull, classy be more French is really for you.

Have you tried channeling Helena Bonham - Carter "posh"?
