Do hairdressers not just do trims anymore?!?

I think I'm being dumb and would appreciate some help, please.

I used to always (badly) cut my hair myself but I've decided recently to get my hair done properly. I've done some research and found the highest rated salons in my area but when I have a look at the price list or try to do online booking they only seem to offer "restyle"s or "styling". I have already been to have my hair "restyled" a few months ago in the top rated salon to correct my own work so am now just looking for simple maintenance.

The description for these say you'll get a "bespoke" consultation to find your new style, to "refresh" your look etc. If you just want a trim, do you have to book this? Maybe it's just the case that the description is overselling what could be just a trim? I also don't want to overpay for "styling" if literally all they're going to do is cut off my dead ends.

Thank you.

Just phone up and ask to book a trim.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 01/07/2024 15:02

Bespoke consultation. The language is ridiculous. I think women's cuts cost a lot more than men's, but I don't see why, mostly.

bananaboats · 01/07/2024 16:11

Sounds like fancy salons! Mine you just phone up and ask for a haircut lol

Comefromaway · 01/07/2024 16:21

I can book in for a fringe trim or a dry cut (trim) if I want to.

dottyaboutstripes · 01/07/2024 16:34

The salon I go to call it a "reshape" and it costs 40 bloody quid! Rip off!

hopeishere · 01/07/2024 16:39

Can you not go back to the salon you already used?

Is there no "cut" option?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/07/2024 16:41

Call and ask how much for a wash cut and blow-dry. But basically I think the "styling" price will be it.

spiderplantmum · 01/07/2024 18:11

Yes @dottyaboutstripes that's why I'm hesitant, because their cheapest cut seems to be £62. I was happy to pay this when they were completely overhauling my hair but it seems silly for a simple wash, trim and rough dry! (Blow drying is extra...)

@hopeishere yes, that's the one I'm looking at. It's a really lovely salon. The reason I started cutting my own hair was because I've had some realllly dodgy haircuts over the years so I was happy to pay extra for a highly rated place if they were going to do a good job - had it styled there a few months ago. But the "restyle" price seems to be the same as a trim?

It seems more down-to-earth places like supercuts actually list a simple cut and blow dry and price it lower but I've had some very questionable cuts from there in the past.

I go to a very nice and normal independent hairdresser who does a normal wash, cut, blow dry and I'm very thankful after years of struggling to find someone !

RaininSummer · 01/07/2024 18:40

Mine does. A dry cut for 19 quid. Look for small salons off of the main shopping streets.

Hedgeoffressian · 01/07/2024 18:48

One of the salons in my town only charge adult rates now so if I want to take my 5 year old daughter in there for a simple cut I would be charged £45 minimum. Outrageous money grabbing is what it is. I went to the other salon and paid a trainee hairdresser £15 instead.

EmeraldRoulette · 01/07/2024 18:51

Not in my old London burb or my new place

mum used to do mine but can’t now post-stroke. I cut it myself. Cheapest I can find is £30. That’s their minimum. They don’t have “trim” on the list at all.

Screamingabdabz · 01/07/2024 18:53

I get a dry trim from super cuts. I don’t go when the manager is there as she always tries to upsell the ‘proper cut’ which is twice the price.

cathyburke · 01/07/2024 19:14

Hairdresser here - a trim is the same as a hair cut, same effort involved. But it is not a restyle, I would say they've worded it differently to sound more posh!

movingonsaturday · 01/07/2024 20:01

A trim takes the same amount of time usually. It's not 'just cutting off the dead ends' it all has to be perfectly straight/ shaped, just the same as if you were having more cut off.

Why is it outrageous? She probably has a similar amount of hair to you and you want it just as neat I'm assuming?

Thepurplecar · 01/07/2024 21:00

Cutting hair is cutting hair - the amount cut off is irrelevant - the work is the same however much is cut off.

pizzaHeart · 01/07/2024 21:05

So basically you want to find a cheaper salon which charges less for cut and blow dry. Just look around.

user1471538275 · 01/07/2024 21:16

So if the work is the same however much is cut off, why is it more expensive for a long to short cut?

suki1964 · 01/07/2024 21:24

I often pop into the barbers for a quick trim of the fringe. I walk in, ask if they will trim a fringe and sit and wait along with the fellas - im in and out of the chair in minutes and costs about 6 quid.

However my own hairdresser does a cut and finish for £20, a re- style is £30 and a cut and colour -£40 to £50. Id go to her for a trim but shes always booked or only has inconvenient times when I just want a bit off the fringe

Fair enough @cathyburke. Would you say £62 is reasonable though?
