Please help me with a foundation!

I have dry skin.

I went in boots yesterday and was wandering aimlessly around the makeup when a Boot no 7 counter lady caught me and suggested I get a colour match.

I told her no make up seems to stick to my nose which has red pigment.

She did the colour match and got me green colour correcting primer.

She put it on me and told me she couldn't get the makeup to stick to my nose either but the colour match was nice and she suggested a powder because I was pale and needed colour. She dis the powder on one side only.

Under the bright white lights it looked good.

Get to the car and I look completely TANGOED.

So orange.

So I'm going to return the products tomorrow but can anyone suggest me a foundation please! I can buy from boots

she suggested a powder because I was pale and needed colour did you agree? Did you want "colour?" If not I suggest you go to another counter and try again and say you're happy with your skin colour and want to match it.

And go outside and check in daylight before purchasing.

I'd also get a rich moisturiser

Easipeelerie · 30/06/2024 09:45

Use pore refining cleansing products e.g. cleanser/masks. After you’ve moisturised, put primer on. I use Nars light reflecting foundation. It looks lovely and stays on.

Being orange seems to be in fashion at the moment, I’ve seen beauty instagrammers applying something several shades too orange/yellow, I don’t get it.

Ask her to match your skin colour as closely as possible. If you are very pale it can be hard to find matches although getting easier. You can also ask her to apply the tester and then go outside/home and look at it there, before you buy anything.

By the way if your products are open and used you won’t be able to return them surely?

Being colour matched is such a pain but can provide a useful starting point. I have a rosy undertone so I get matched with the counter-balancing orange (warm) crap. I learned though that the neutral stuff is what suits me. I also once got matched with "ecru", which makes me look like a vampire. So my take away is this, do get the suggestions from the folks at the counter, but then explore the products near it for your best match.

I also have a red nose (rosacea), for me I've found that it's skin care that helps foundation stick, not the foundation product itself. I don't need the green stuff and I don't wear thick makeup - I buy a full coverage product (EL Futurist) but I apply it lightly, my freckles still come though but it takes out the rosacea. It's the cleansing, toning and moisturising for my skin's needs that helps my foundation to sit right.

I forgot, about the dry skin. I'm very dry, always have been. I use a balm cleanser. Followed by glycolic acid, followed by serum, either nicinamide (if the acne us rearing up) or hyaluronic acid, followed by spf in day time, followed by a balm moisturiser, then the foundation.

It looked good under the big lights

I'm autistic and have social anxiety so I'm not great at standing firm but it looked nice under the very white light.

When I got in the car and looked in the mirror it looked totally different

They aren't open.

She used shop testers on my face in the same shades and I bought them.

They're in the bag unused.

Oh no I'm not blaming you at all. You should be able to trust that it's not going to look silly.

I think if you go again I'd practice asking for it to be a true match. I also have social anxiety and it is really hard. I have got used to saying I like my foundation to match but I totally get it. You put your trust in the professionals. I had to build up to asking to go stand outside and look in a mirror!

Ok that's good. I think you should be able to go back and return them but it's going to be hard due to your anxiety.

Something like "hi I was matched to these in store but they are a bit to warm for me in daylight would I be able to swap for a different shade?"

She said it was a perfect match, they use the machine and take photos of your skin?

I think the powder was also the colour match one.

She said I could go with translucent, which is colourless but she suggests the colour match one as I'm pale and could use the colour.

Sorry if I was not clear.

My friend will do the returning 😅

I've triple checked the returns policy

whenever i'm buying foundation, i always tell the staff i'm going to go outside and come back in an hour so i can wander around and see how the tester looks in different lighting. they've always been fine.

it can take a while to find a decent shade;

counter 1 (day 1): got colour matched, liked it, but didn't love it.

counter 2 (day 2): they plastered so much make up on me, it looked awful under their lighting, but looked better after a while.

counter 3 (day 3): same brand as counter 1, but different store. suggested the product on day 1, but it looked awful. we tried various products and none looked right, so i left it.

counter 4 (day 3): hit the jackpot and found a decent shade.

... quite long winded, but the point i'm making is that it can take time to find a decent foundation and don't be afraid to say you aren't happy.

if you are struggling with a foundation, maybe try a tinted moisturiser, as they have a lighter coverage and can be more forgiving.

minipie · 30/06/2024 11:39

Oh yes sorry if unopened you can return. Sorry, I misunderstood

Go and find a MAC counter which has lots of shade of foundation on a day and time when it's quite. Have a consultation and get them to put three close matches for you on your jaw line in distinct streaks like this image below.

Get them to give you a mirror, tell them you want to check it in natural day light and go outside of the shop to have a look. If you want a second opinion, see if the assistant will go with you. You will be able to see which one is the best colour match.

MAc have different foudnation weights too so you can pick one that suits your 'non-stick' skin.
