Workwear into Casual wear!

I've recently spent big on my work wardrobe, started a new job and needed a refresh. We live overseas and I'm keen to make some of the bits work for a trip back to the UK in September. Any tips on how to make classic tailoring work dressed down?

These are a few of the key bits I've bought

Shorts and trousers with t-shirts/casual tops and trainers/chunky sandals

Blazer (over t-shirt or vest top) with jeans

Waistcoat with jeans or wide leg trousers

I don't think I could be trusted with such a light coloured blazer but love love love all the other bits. Some basic tshirts and a nice pair of jeans would see you a full casual wardrobe.

Wear a smart piece with a basic item. Casual shoes and bag.

Leave the light coloured jacket at home, I think it's the hardest to dress down and the hardest to travel with as it's so easily got dirty and stained.

The hardest thing a a jacket or a coat - I have a trench which I love. Also jeans ! Feel a bit clueless with them.

But I've seen these which I like

I love your style and don’t really think you can go too wrong with the brands you’ve picked from! Some of my most stylish friends are wearing & Other Stories indigo coloured, high waisted, wide leg jeans and I think they’d look great with all of the top halves above and a blazer/trench. Depends how casual you want to be - I’d wear pretty much all of your selection on a normal weekend day so wouldn’t feel the need to dress it down much further! To your existing picks I’d probably add a nice plain white tshirt, smartish trainers, ankle boots/loafers, the aforementioned jeans and the french coat you mentioned. I think that would give heaps of options from v casual with the trainers and tshirt (nice with either the wide leg trousers, jeans or shorts), to suitable for a nice dinner eg lace top/waistcoat, blazer and ankle boots. You’ve made me want to go and sort out my own wardrobe!

I would also wear all those pieces casually, so I don't think you'll have any problem. Agree with PP that a plain t-shirt (baggyish, tucked in) and a pair of trainers are sufficient to dress it down. Look up Lydia Tomlinson on Youtube or Instagram, I think you'll like her style. She's a UK influencer.

Not keen on those jeans though.

I have great boots - you might disagree

I've typically always bought this brand of white pumps (although not comfortable)

At the weekends here I wear scotch & soda and lulu - but want to be a bit more 'dressed' don't feel I can rock up to lunch in tights Confused

Mmm I get they're expensive but I feel like those are mum boots. Ditto the trainers, pricey and nice, but not particularly on trend.

syndromeImposter · 03/07/2024 13:47

@JudgeBurrito

Can you suggest a better less 'mum' boot?

Although I'm a mum..happy for an alternative runner too?

I'm not looking to be the most stylish person in the room - just someone who can make their wardrobes work together

I quite like a Chelsea boot - either more classic or chunkier. Definitely not the height of fashion and not sure they’d go with wide leg trousers but not sure what would be best tbh. Re trainers, I wear Sambas a lot (which I guess are no longer cool post-Rishi(?!)) but I’d prefer something plainer than some giant colourful running shoe, if that’s what’s more in fashion now…
