Clothes buying addiction

Ok this may not be the right place for this but I need to stop!!! For the sake of my bank account and my expanding wardrobe!

Back story (although I've always been bad). Lost a load of weight, chucked out most of my clothes. Now can't stop buying stuff. Lovely dresses! Shorts! Jeans! Trainers! Everything. Luckily I don't have super expensive tastes and it's mostly high street stuff. And because I shop a lot online I'm constantly bombarded with emails and social media ads to buy more.

Short of turning off all social media and freezing my bank account any tips on stopping spending? I'm at the stage I'm hiding stuff from my husband...

Are you wearing all the new clothes you’ve bought and getting pleasure from showing off a new you? Because that would be entirely natural.

It’s a problem if you’re just acquiring and hoarding stuff, maybe in unopened bags, that you have no need or opportunity to wear.

chalkyc2 · 29/06/2024 08:49

I was...but I now have more stuff than I have opportunity to wear. Particularly shorts vs current UK weather!

I think I'm at the tipping point. I now need nothing more.

Wait, a minute.....did I write this!?

I can really identify. Lost just over 100Ibs and am now shocked by the skinny person in the mirror who can fit into things I only dreamed of before.
then spent an absolute bloody fortune on clothes using the excuses that nothing fit and it was only cheap high st brands anyways!
I do wear all my clothes and TBH Ive found my buying is slowing right down (there really arent many gaps left in my wardrobe and I dont need another denim maxi skirt when I already have one!).

Hopefully you will slow down too when your wardrobe is more complete.

Hey OP, it is only normal to want to get new clothes for the new you!
However now that you have enough, I would unsubscribe from the emails. Remember that these emails are prepared by marketing specialists and everything in them will be made to entice your brain to buy more and more. Also send back any catalogues posted in the mail. This will reduce temptation.
And also adapt your mindset - if you get the high of buying, remember that you can always return. The purchase point is not the end point, if you made a bit of an unsuitable or experimental purchase, you can always return the purchase.
I would also follow some social media accounts on how to shop your own wardrobe, style existing things together, new ways of doing your hair. This might hit your social media spot and self-care spot without having to spend extra money and purchase stuff.

Ha @henlake7 yes same!! I can actually wear the clothes I wanted to wear and I WANT them!!

I do find it gives me a high. But the wardrobe is full. I need no more summer clothes. I do return a lot (mostly trainers which I've always had a thing for).

Shopping my wardrobe is a good idea @Pancakeorcrepe - I do find despite the lovely things I often revert to jeans and a sweatshirt! I actually love basics and neutrals. I cycle to the station for work so some of the dresses I've bought aren't easy to combine. But I will! I will be randomly overdressed because why not!

Also - S&B - stop tempting me!

Vinted is your friend in this situation. I have a new wardrobe for this summer and i’ve hardly spent any money. Sold things and used the money to buy new things

Same here, after weight loss. I am trying to tell myself to be more critical of the things I buy. When I was overweight I was just relieved things fitted and I could do the buttons up! Now I try to be a little more strict on the best of the best.

Also make a list of key things you need - I don't need three different colours of the same style of shorts. I follow TurquoiseFlamingo on Instagram and she has great style rules to follow. For example pick three colours to coordinate etc. That helps you narrow things down a little.

When I shop in store or online I tell myself that it's one item I'm allowed, but allow myself to try on everything. Then hang them up and be truly critical in the cull. Also will what you buy fit into your wardrobe with existing items.

Maybe try and sell your older larger clothes to drive a budget for new ones? There are probably many people who are between their old weight and goal weight whooght appreciate a bargain item?

chalkyc2 · 29/06/2024 10:19

All the old clothes were donated. I was ruthless. And it was terrifying! I've been very (too) successful at rebuilding though!
