Do you find high street shops now really expensive ?

Obviously I know things have gone up everywhere but the likes of new look charging £44.99 for a dress that's gonna shrink in the wash and zara prices are crazy now.
It's a bit depressing that even cheap brands now are expensive

Totally agree!

Often just thing fabric in a basic shape too.

£60+ for a blouse seems mad to me.

IDontHateRainbows · 24/06/2024 15:39

I think there is 2 tier pricing even within the same brands.... sale and non sale

They know some people can afford full price and will pay that... probably majority hold out for sale price

Normallynumb · 24/06/2024 15:41

I've bought pretty much everything from Vinted in the last year or two
I'm happy to buy pre owned brands because a few years ago, the fabric was so much better than recently.
Price doesn't guarantee quality either
My jaw drops whenever I look recently at the prices
I'm wearing a lovely well made linen top today originally from next.
I'm sure this years offerings pale in comparison

SausageRoll2020 · 24/06/2024 15:54

I think prices have probably gone up inline with the increase in production and staffing costs.

ExhaustedCoffeedrinker · 24/06/2024 19:30

Oh definitely, I can't get myself to buy from Newlook anymore.

VestPantsandSocks · 24/06/2024 19:32

Over priced and poor quality. It's depressing.

PrincessCordelia · 24/06/2024 19:33

Check out eBay, charity shops, vinted ect if you want a bargain these days it will probably only be found second hand smh

purpledagger · 24/06/2024 19:51

i find you're never too far away from a discount code or sale though, so there is normally a deal to be done.

MidnightMeltdown · 24/06/2024 20:29

I dunno, I think that prices are still alarmingly cheap. I haven't shopped in Zara for about 15 years. Just had a quick look on their website and you can still get dresses around the £30-£35 mark. That's about what I was paying 15 years ago!

Not sure how cheap people expect things to be. Even if the shape is basic, someone still has to produce the fabric, dye it, sew it, ship it half way across the world etc.

MidnightMeltdown · 24/06/2024 20:43

New look also have absolutely loads of dresses for under £35. They've even got a 'dresses under £20' option 🤷🏻‍♀️

I guess that they've just added a few more expensive lines for those who want to spend a bit more on a more elaborate design/better quality fabric, but the cheap options are still there!

Absolutely they are still there but the dresses that were say £24.99 previously are now the £35 ones a few years ago a £35 dress was quite a nice one.
For me it's just pushed me up a bracket or two personally if I'm spending £35 in newlook I'd rather spend £60 on a great material alternative.

Bohomovies · 26/06/2024 20:06

I find the high street so expensive as well. I really can’t justify £50 for a polyester dress. I remember back in the 80s and early 90s when the high street was much better quality. Things in Topshop and New Look could be silk velvet, or leather, or cotton. Now everything is polyester or viscose, and the natural fibres are even more extortionate!

These days it’s Vinted, EBay and charity shops for me. I tend to buy shoes brand new because of lack of choice.

GettingStuffed · 26/06/2024 20:13

Cotton isn't particularly ethical due to the large amount of water needed in it's production from seed to fabric and viscose is made from wood pulp. What we need to do as consumers is buy less clothes and dismiss fashion as a hoax to get us to spend our money.

Says me in a polycotton dress I bought from Temu

BeefBrisket · 26/06/2024 20:39

It's going to have to be sale or secondhand then.

I find a lot of high street retailers depressing. Lots of it is tat. The sale rail has the most awful fabrics, cuts and patterns that nobody will ever buy. Full price is a rip off for some polyester tat made in a sweatshop

H&M is ok. I usually chance it with secondhand though, or mango sales.
