I use big velcro rollers as I have curly/frizzy hair and i helps to smooth it and give it a shape

yes - ages ago I bought cheapy mccheap velcro ones from the £ shop to try and they were fab. Tried heated ones but they were too heavy and fell out.

make my not-quite-wavy hair into smooth bouncy 40s screen siren waves but my hair is fine and takes curl quite well, if yours is thick and poker straight will be harder

1.5" diam

you need loads though as you can't put too much hair round each one

takes ages to dry as well - if you put them in wet hair after the shower in the morning they will by dry by 3pm. Better to start with dry hair, damp each bit and spritz with Product ('firm hold gel styling spray' or sommat) then wind up.

I facy heated rollers

Use them in damp, but nearly dry hair, as they take forever to dry, otherwise. Great for fine hair - thick hair just takes to long to do. Heated rollers are really good on thick hair.

they are good for making it curl at the ends because the bit nearest the roller gets the strongest curl

I cannot find pic

like Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale
or Dita von Teese

Bumble & Bumble have a curl cream that you put on damp hair- curl conscious or something. From Space NK. It makes my otherwise frizzy hair quite ringletty, which is a plan of sorts. Tis quite expensive but lasts years. And they have sachets for free that they give you to try it.

Also i put a bit of hair tied back while the underneath dries which really helps the no frizziness.

Tbh i have never bothered w rollers/curlers as it takes me long enough to leave the house as it is. I think that same Eva Longoria look can be done really easily with a hair dryer and the right brush - but no idea myself as don't dry my hair (due to leaving the house issues)
