Come and talk BELTS with me...who can and can't wear them?

Since I can't get an answer on the Gok Wan thread!
I've got big norks and unfortunately a big tummy (with 'lady lines') I'm a size 12 most of the time and I have a waist though not the one I had before dc (sigh...)
The girls on the programme were similar shape to me (much bigger boobs though) and they looked fab with wide belts but I just have visions of flab oozing out of the top and bottom! So what's the mn verdict?

Trousers always look better with belts however curvy you are. They finish off a pair of trousers.

moondog · 08/04/2008 22:12

No belts is horrid early 80s look.

zippitippitoes · 08/04/2008 22:14

i just got a belt as my jens all fall down and i do a builders bum all the time

but tis not one of those decorative not holding things up ones

and i had to go through airport security three times on sunday and was a nuisance having to take it off three times

DANCESwithaMuffinTop · 08/04/2008 22:16

I just don't know if I can get over my fear of wearing things tucked in (wobbly stomach) but then have eighties flash back issues with belts over long tops. What a dilema

Ah eighties high waisted jean, no belts and bouffant shirts....lurvely.

I think you've just got to try various ones and see what works, and it won't necessarily be what you think will work. I bought a dress the other day that was a kind of shirt dress shape, but it was a bit shapeless and mumsy, and I thought maybe one of those elasticated waist cincher things might work with it - looked dreadful. What did work, turned out to be a really quite loose belt almost on my hips. Dunno - just have a play around, I'd say.

moondog · 08/04/2008 22:18

You don't have to tuck in, or if you do,go for a jacket/nice cardy over the top.

Oh and stay away from jersey/t shirt material. it is the worst for showing up lumps and bumps.

DANCESwithaMuffinTop · 08/04/2008 22:23

I know what you mean about jersey, it is EVERYWHERE, find Kew jersey tops particularly clingy.

Jackieno - you are right but I have these pesky flamin' kids who whine and disappear in shops , don't leave alot of time for trying on I think I need an online belt shopping spree but then belt shopping online

Gawd I'm boring myself...

JackieNo · 08/04/2008 22:25

I know, belt shopping online just isn't any fun at all (it's not really that much fun in an actual shop, to be honest, is it). Do you not have any at all you could play with? I found I did have 2 or 3 (mostly ones that came 'free' with other garments).

DANCESwithaMuffinTop · 08/04/2008 22:32

Hmmmm...maybe, I'll have a look, I have a few of the sort that go round the hips. I like the really wide ones that look like you wrap them round a few times and knot at the front but haven't dared try them on. Somehow when I get into New Look I suddenly feel like a try hard, overweight oldster and usually half heartedly pluck at a few garments before running off back to marks and spencers

OP posts:
JackieNo · 08/04/2008 22:37

Yes - I love that style too (obi style, isn't it?). Haven't tried any on though.

DANCESwithaMuffinTop · 08/04/2008 22:43

Obi style - I like it, I can draw on my sci-fi geek roots when I feel my will slipping in New Look

OP posts:
JackieNo · 09/04/2008 08:13

No, obi as in geishas, not as in 'Help me, Obi wan'. But I guess he wore a kind of one too.

JackieNo · 09/04/2008 08:14

(oh, and may the Force be with you, by the way)

i can't either, have shortest body on earth so look like monobosom in a belt. dh is constantly urging me to wear one but he thinks i should dress like a hooker most of the time so is disregarded.

DANCESwithaMuffinTop · 09/04/2008 09:13

I am a geek.

Agree with moondog on trousers - if there are belt loops, wear a belt.

I saw a black patent semi-wide belt in Marni yesterday afternoon that I am hankering after for a new dress of mine (that doesn't need a belt, but I could achieve a different look with the belt). Belt is unfortunately same price as dress was...

Yes Cod I love Marni

There are great metallic belts and shoes in Miu Miu too.

DarthVader · 10/04/2008 12:32

why wear a belt even? just pin £20 notes around the top of your trews!
