How to go grey gracefully and cheaply

Hello 👋
I'm 50 and have always dyed my short, brown hair at home using a box dye which is cheap and relatively convenient. However, as I age, it's looking too harsh as it needs to be a darker brown to disguise the roots. I'd like to lighten it to allow a few greys through with natural streaks of brown) auburn.

I don't want to spend a fortune at the hairdressers. Can anyone recommend a product I can buy?

I did it using that colour spray (l'oreal magic retouch) and colourwow root powder that disguises roots, until it was long enough to cut into a pixie, then grew the pixie out. (Like Dame Judi Dench length pixie)
It helped that it was during the pandemic and I was wearing PPE a lot though

What shade of brown is your original hair colour? Is that what you have been aiming for? With short hair it should be a quick and easy process. Don't think about Auburn with lightening unless you are happy with orange. Do you have your hair cut by a hairdresser? Have layers put in, change your parting from one side to the other. As we get older, our skin tone changes, mine is much lighter. It's very difficult to colour your own hair leaving streaks of your natural grey. Lockdown showed that grey/white hair could be fabulous

My hair is a dark brown which I'd like to soften. I quite like the colour when it goes brassy in the sun but the roots are still dark which looks odd. I'm not ready to go full grey yet. I'd have a look for kits with streak combs.
