Greasy hair!

DD (19) has suddenly developed very greasy hair over the past month. She used to be able to comfortably wash it every other night but now she’s barely making it through day 1 without her roots starting to look oily. Her hair is naturally very straight so it gets obvious quite quickly. No idea of the cause as nothing (shampoo, exercise level etc) has changed.. it’s really strange.

Any recommendations for remedies? A good dry shampoo maybe? She wants to avoid having to wash every day due to bleach damage/frizz. Have already tried Neutrogena T Gel shampoo for oily scalp but it didn’t make any difference whatsoever.

It’s probably hormones, progesterone drives oil production.

No option but to wash it, scalps like being clean.

On the expensive side but Ouai Detox Shampoo is perfect for cleansing an oily scalp!

Worth a GP visit or would that be overkill?

I’ve had oily hair since a teen and need to wash it every day.

I find that after my hair gets “used” to a certain shampoo it doesn’t even seem to last a day without looking bad. I swap shampoo to something else then.

Absolutely nothing I’ve tried has done anything to reduce the daily washing unfortunately.

Probably not if it’s in isolation.

Has she started birth control in the last 6 months?

I'm using shampoo designed to remove chlorine. Hard water area so my hair looks lank and greasy v quickly. (Paul Mitchell Clarifying Shampoo 3)

I wash it daily. Hairdressers have a stroke but my hair has never looked better. It's not drying out and getting brittle and I'm using it about a year now.

Nope, no birth control. Now I think about it she recently had quite a strong course of steroids though - after googling apparently these can cause hormonal changes so you’re probably right!

I have occasionally had a bout of horribly greasy hair. I find a rinse with rosemary water works well. Steep rosemary in boiled water for a while, drain and use as a rinse .

Ah there you go, they cause acne in men who abuse them to bulk up but if you need them you don’t have much choice.

It should be temporary then.

I’ve had this problem for years. I started using Faith in Nature shampoo and conditioner a couple of months ago . Think it’s the grapefruit one. The conditioner doesn’t seem to coat my hair like other ones do. Not as moisturising. I can leave it a day in between now which I’ve not been able to do before.

Air drying will also make a greasy scalp.

I use hair drier and the hair oil the ends only which has helped

I’ve got awfully greasy hair and wash it daily. If I leave it any longer my scalp gets inflamed and very sore. People will tell you that you can ‘train’ your hair to be less greasy by washing it less frequently but it doesn’t work. I’ve never found anything that helps. On the plus side, being a greasy beggar means I have no wrinkles at 50!
