Please tell me if this pink lace top worn with smart black trousers in an office setting is frumpy? I wore it yesterday and was told I looked really old in it !

Whoever told you that is very rude. It's certainly not something I'd expect to see on a young person though. How old are you?

keylimedog · 19/06/2024 10:28

That's very rude of someone! Unless you specifically asked?

It's not something I really see people wearing in our office, I perhaps might be a bit old fashioned but I wouldn't say that to someone. I don't really care that much what people are wearing!

Lentilweaver · 19/06/2024 10:28

I generally find lace ugly; It conjures up images of doilies and tablecloths. Not old, but displeasing to my eye.

That said, your colleague was very rude. I don't comment on other people's clothes, except here.

Chewbecca · 19/06/2024 10:35

That is rude!

To answer the question, I think the trouser style is key. I like the top itself. It could look non frumpy if worn with an up to date trouser / shoe combi but would look old fashioned with 90s office Next style trousers / shoes?

Floisme · 19/06/2024 10:35

Yes you will definitely catch old age from that top - just look at all those holes in it.

I'm sorry if you were upset op and your colleague sounds like a bellend, but I cannot take this stuff seriously any more.

CakeIsNotAvailable · 19/06/2024 10:38

Who cares? It's the office, not a night on the pull. Unless you're hoping to catch the eye of a hot colleague, why worry if you look young or old?!

For what it's worth I'm late 30s and I might wear it - I like being fairly modest at work. But I do probably dress older than I am, in part because I find I get taken more seriously if I don't look pretty or glam.

ArcticBells · 19/06/2024 10:39

Worn with ankle grazer Zara trousers and pumps. No comment invited - was working and minding my own business Confused

What fucker said that?!

The key point is who said it, and what is their problem.

ArcticBells · 19/06/2024 10:41

@CakeIsNotAvailable I'm not actually really that bothered - just wanted an opinion

I’d need to see the whole outfit on to be honest. I’d have probably quipped back that the thing that made the outfit look old was the body inside it and there’s nowt I can do about that. But then I’m guessing you’re young.

ChocHotolate · 19/06/2024 10:43

I've heard that colour described as "menopause pink" because it is worn by ladies of that age. I don't agree with the comment but it must be reasonably wide assumption about that colour

FrogNToad · 19/06/2024 10:47

There's a sort of granny chic that some people can get away with. At my age I'd just look like a granny though.

My Mum is ancient and her idea of a smart outfit is black trousers and a nice top, so to me that is a look that I'd avoid. Depends how formal your office is though.

I think the lace thing.has been and gone and charity shops are full of it, so yes maybe it might look a bit dated. As others have said it probably hangs on the style of the trousers and shoes but there are probably much nicer tops to.be found.

Maddy70 · 19/06/2024 10:48

It ia a bit frumpy tbh

Tel12 · 19/06/2024 10:55

With black trousers and pumps, absolutely fine. Whoever made that remark is just plain rude.

Reddog1 · 19/06/2024 11:13

It depends on the wearer I guess. Put it on Kate Moss or Tess Daly or Kate Middleton and it’ll look banging. As will most stuff I suppose.

And the trousers are key as others have said. Cheap boot cuts that are a bit too short won’t even work for Kate/Tess/Kate.

Your colleague is discourteous by the way. It’s one thing answering your question on Mumsnet Style board, quite another to give you an unsolicited negative opinion.

PrincessMee · 19/06/2024 12:12

I think it is the length of the sleeves. Shorter or 3/4 would give it an entirely different look.

thedevilinablackdress · 19/06/2024 14:31

Not OLD! OH MY GOD SET IT ON FIRE IMMEDIATELY.

(And the correct answer to the comment was "Why thank you! That's what I hoped. A lot of older people really do have the best style don't they")

TheOGCCL · 19/06/2024 15:14

I'm not a fan of black with colours, that would look nicer - and potentially more modern - with brown or grey or white trousers. Black sucks the living daylights out of colour unless it's white (but is that even a colour), or more black.

I think the top falls in a bit of a no man's land. It's not evening-y enough for a night out but yet still seems a bit fussy and overdone for daytime. I think accessories are key with something like this. Jewellery could lift it and give it some more oomph.

I would never say this to anyone unsolicited though. And if you did want to change up the look a little it wouldn't take much.
