Help me find a gift for a 1 year old!

It’s my friend’s daughter’s first birthday on Thursday and I have asked her what sort of present she would like/need. She has said she would prefer books or clothes. I have a budget of around £20 but have no clue what to buy. I don’t want to buy a voucher, we always buy each other presents but I find it increasingly difficult to buy kids stuff as I have a boy and I’m not clued up on girls clothes. I’m not very stylish myself so this simple task has me stumped. Wouldn’t know what books to get either as her daughter isn’t currently into books and is at the stage where she prefers to chew them 😂

I have been looking at Next and M&S and have seen some lovely items but the minute I have to start piecing together an outfit I get stuck as I’m second guessing whether I’ve made it too matchy or that they completely don’t look right! As I said, I am not stylish 🤷🏻‍♀️ please help, oh stylish Mnetters, can anyone find me some nice gifts for £20ish??

The pyjamas you've linked to are very cute but just in case you didn't realise / your friend's daughter doesn't need this kind of clothing: they're part of the 'adaptive' range that M&S do, which are clothes adapted for children with specific needs like access for feeding tubes or wider necklines to be removed without disturbing medical devices etc. If this is not what you need I'd recommend getting a pair of non-adaptive pjs.

Oh dear, I had not read that part about the pyjamas being adapted so thank you! I can’t find any other pyjamas on the M&S website in that price range though which is weird. Why have they got adapted ones and no non adaptive ones, so strange!

These are quite cute:

Thanks @cherryassam these are really nice. For some reason if I filter pyjamas in the baby section only 14 options come up and they aren’t the usual M&S range like these, so I’m clearly incompetent 😂
I am going to buy these I think as they are lovely.

Velour PJs are a bit warm for this time of year.

It’s because most babies these days are in sleep suits, not pyjamas.

It’s to last until she is 18 months which will be December. We are not in a warm part of the UK and live by the sea in old drafty houses so it will not be warm come autumn. I actually dressed my toddler in velour pyjamas last week as it was cold and it has been a cold summer here so far. I’m sure it’s probably a different story down south though.

I hadn’t thought of that 😂 I dressed mine in PJs from 1 year old as he would have nappy leaks over night and sleep suits used to be a right pain as it would mean a whole outfit change. Plus, he would like to stand up at that age and the footed sleep suits were a bit of trip hazard and also would squash his toes as he was tall. I just preferred separates as they were so much easier. I have heard my friend complaining of overnight nappy leaks also, so I think separate PJs would be welcomed.

You’re right, she is crawling and my friend has told me she can leave her bare legged as her legs get scraped. Her mum puts her in dresses with leggings or trousers/joggers with a top. She usually dresses her in bright colours but nothing overly patterned.

I am thinking of doing what @NuffSaidSam suggested and buying a little board book set I’ve seen featuring the hungry caterpillar and looking at some pyjamas from M&S.

Sorry just wanted to point out that if she chews books, board books won't survive. Mine is the exact same and they just get turned into mush🤣

Just get a £20 WH Smith voucher so she can but the kids books she wants.
My daughter loved the Winnie the Witch series and you can often get box sets on something like Bookworld for around your budget
