comfortable but stylish outfit for long distance flight

First time posting so hope I've got this right. I'm 63, 5'4 and a size 14 with big boobs and a tummy. Flying to California in July to meet my brother. Want to look effortlessly chic (something I've never been able to achieve) but comfortable. I've got a mop of grey curls in a short bob and I really don't want to look like an old lady travelling. I get a big enough shock every time I look in the mirror as it is. Any suggestions?

Honestly no one will care what you like. Wear something comfy, change before landing if you really feel the need.

Fair point - but I care what I look like.

I like wide leg linen trousers for flights, with an elastic waist.

A matching oversized linen shirt would be very chic! M&S usually have some good options.

I plan on wearing a long-sleeved tunic with leggings.

Comfort is most important but unfortuantely pjs are frowned upon and I don't want to look like a jumble sale. Jeans will cut. Long arms stop you getting too cold from the air con. Leggings mean that I can put jumbo fluffy socks on top.

I wouldn't go linen as it creases so badly. She will end up looking very crumpled by the time she arrives.

OP you could either travel in the same thing you plan to arrive in or be even more organised and take an outfit to change into on the plane. You can also take some skincare and light make up to do on the plane so you look extra refreshed.

I would have a look at the white company for beautiful loungewear. Cashmere would work very well.

I was going to say wide leg trousers as per ascothelp, with an elasticated/comfortable waistband BUT make sure they are ones that do not crease otherwise you won't achieve the look you are going for at the other end.

Same rules with the top, loose, comfortable and not one that creases. If you go for an oversized shirt option you could also wear an additional layer underneath.

If you step off the 'plane in an outfit creased to oblivion you will feel creased yourself!

Linen is lovely but tricky due to the crumple factor. Crumpled linen looks exquisite on Tilda Swinton, the rest of us may not pull it off in such style.
However - you may be one of those people who can OP! Have you looked at White Stuff's linen collection? I have one of their tunics and love it. Great shape for a 5ft 3 plumpish woman (that's me!) Team with some nice loose trousers.

Cotton palazzo trousers with elasticated waistband and merino wool long sleeve t-shirt is what I wore in my last long haul flight and I felt good.

GerbilsForever24 · 17/06/2024 16:07

@PlacidPenelope has it. Wide legged trousers with elasticised waist, not linen.

A good t-shirt or flowy shirt. Consider fabric here - it can get sweaty on the plane so it's worth wearing cotton, but something that won't get to creased.

A denim or other light jacket can do a lot of the work of elevating an outfit on arrival, but take a lightweight jumper in cotton or cashmere for the flight itself.
