Going grey - options?

Has any ever stopped colouring their hair but then returned to doing so? Before the pandemic I was starting to get a bit of grey and used to buy a box of Nice'n Easy permanent in light or medium ash brown every few weeks to cover it. It was like painting the Forth Bridge to be honest, with constant messy root touch-ups. During lockdown I just gave up completely but now I want to return to colouring it and am wondering what my options are? Happy to go to a salon if that means the colour will last longer and I'll make less of a mess in my bathroom!

I think you need to get lowlights done, somewhere they specialise in good colour.

In my experience, it still looks a bit shit after 4 weeks even when done by the hair dresser. I had 'grey blending' high lights and low lights done by the hairdresser and wish I'd never bothered now. I still had a stripe by my roots after a month.

How grey are you and is it the same all over your hair? The problem I have is that I'm white around my temples, salt and pepper on top and what can only be described as gunmetal at the back. So if I go blonde, I get dark roots!

I'm just going to grow it out again and start using a temporary colour wash (like Glaze or similar) through it to give it a bit of life.

Lurking for ideas.

i stopped dying my hair about ten months ago and am planning to go buy a box of hair dye tomorrow as Dd told me yesterday my hair looks awful and ages me 20 years. I’m dark brunette naturally but loads of grey at the temples, quite a bit on top but dark at the back like @ProjectEdensGate

so a dark brown dye means i fight the grey regrowth. I haven’t tried going blonde but think I’d have some dark roots on top and even more at the back. Plus I don’t think blonde suits my colouring.

Thank you ladies, it sounds like we are all at the same stage of going greyness! Today I bought a box of semi-permanent dye in light ash brown. It claims to leave no visible root line, as the colour gradually washes away. I promise to report back!

I completely grew out my formerly brown tinted hair during covid, decided I hated the grey, and eventually took the plunge. I now have high & lowlights, and the grey roots aren't obvious for a while, - hair looks fairly brown overall. T-section done every 3 months then every third visit I get the whole head done. Nothing is ideal after you go grey but I can live with this and it's not stupidly high maintenance.

I wouldn't go back to an all over tint.

I stopped dying my hair during lockdown lasted about a year and straight back to it
I have super dark hair and it feel like it's about 50% white
I find I get better results going to the hair dressers my hair feels in better conditions the application if far better/even and the biggest plus is there's no mess.
I go between 8 and 10 weeks. After 6 weeks my roots are noticeable but I hold off as long as I can just to save money

I go to a hairdresser - I get a light brown caramel colour on the roots and that blends well as long as you don’t see my hair line! I go 8-10 weeks - also have some blond bits added every 6 months. My colourist is brilliant
