Do you cut your DP/DH/DS hair?

DH usually goes to hairdressers for his cut but the other day he came home with some clippers and said that I could have a go.
I've never cut hair before.
I've just watched the DVD that came with the clippers but not sure I've learnt much from it.
Any tips please?

Is he just having the same all over?

ScienceTeacher · 08/04/2008 12:51

Occasionally. I just do a #2 all over for DH as he has male pattern baldness and short definitely looks better.

It's pretty hard to get wrong with the clippers if you are doing the same length all over. You can always start with a longer length, and change to progressively shorter ones.

oh it's a doddle with clippers. My DH does his own and then I just neaten it up at the back with the sticky out bit on clippers (no- I never watched dvd!). Have a go.......tis DH's fault (and problem) if it all goes wrong!

I do DS and sometimes DH with the clippers. I do DS's longer on top than the sides, but he's not old enough to be fussy !

I find it easiest to do when the hair is damp as otherwise it can sort of jump off the blades

Agree it's easy with clippers. My DH cuts his own hair with them, without a mirror, and just gets me to check it and do any bits he's missed.

The shorter your DH wants it, the easier it is.

Find someone who knows what they're doing. Get them to do it the first time and watch I cut DHs hair but he has very very tight curls, so it's more hedge trinmming than cutting, lol, plus my SIL was a hairdresser and I watched her cutting his hair for years before I started doing it.

Be brave.

Start cutting it longer than he would normally have so you've got room to correct anything, plus you've got an idea what it's going to look like.

It's the finishing touches that make it look cut - doing the edges, tidying around the ear and the sideys, shaving their necks.

Put a big sheet on the floor, or do it in the kitchen as the hair gets everywhere.

It is very satisfying I have to say.

yes i do dh and ds with scissors. one is 42 the other nearly 3 and they each make equal fuss.

do wear an apron or something, you will get covered. i find behind the ears the worst bit, have found that echoing the ear shape while providing a bit of coverage is best. but they both have gigantic ears which need to be disguised.

I do what castille does, finish off what DH has started with the clippers. He has a #1 though so it's not difficult at all.

Have tried to do a previous partner's hair when he wanted different lengths (ie tapering down from a #3 to a #1 at the back) and I couldn't manage that.

doggiesayswoof · 08/04/2008 13:40

My biggest tip would be: you have to have quite a light touch with the clippers. When I started doing it apparently I used to dig into his scalp too much

I have done but i have watched lots of time dh doing to dss and then once i did for ds and two times for dh.

TigerFeet · 08/04/2008 14:56

I have offered to do dh's but he has refused.

Not sure why, I do a good job shearing my ladygarden
