What on earth can I wear to this event??

What should I wear to this event? I have no clue! Please help!!

I’m late 30’s, fairly “on trend” I think, 5’10” size 12 with curves. Not got my flat stomach back after pregnancy which I feel a bit self conscious about, and I also have never liked my upper arms. I feel this restricts my wardrobe a lot. Colour-wise I’m a bright winter (light green eyes, dark hair) so I need colours that work within that which are cool toned / bright / contrasting.

Anyway there’s an event I’m going to where a client will be hosting in his home. This is an important client, very wealthy, hosting at his Mayfair home. However, the event itself is “casual” - a Saturday afternoon running into the evening. There will be drinks, cocktail waiters, food but it’s all just meant to be casual. The client himself always wears jeans or shorts with flip flops(!) but he is super wealthy, think tech mogul proportions.

My colleagues are all men and will be wearing chinos and a smart casual shirt from Gant or similar.

What the hell do I wear?!! As it’s in the clients home I don’t want to feel over dressed or stiff. I barely ever wear heels but they wouldn’t really be suitable. Anything too rigid would look awful. In the other hand wearing jeans would be wrong and ill-judged.

Event us at the end of the month in London so weather probably won’t be hot if we are going by this summer so far.

Please help!!!

Summer dress, flat sandals or ballet pumps, cashmere cardigan

Whycantiwinmillionsandsquillions · 16/06/2024 13:51

Linen or wool trousers with a blouse and blazer. Shoes depends on the weather but I would go for sandals.

FartingAgainstThunder · 16/06/2024 14:00

Wide legged trousers with a sezane style shirt.
Flat shoes or really cool trainers with simple accessories.

Nothing which is formal tailored work wear or an evening dress. Nothing which appears on any website which describes itself as "wedding guest"

Once you've ruled that the only other consideration is your budget and personal preferences. You're in London - try looking round Liberty for a starter.

If it were me, I'd wear one of my Klements, Cabbages and Roses or Eponine dresses.

Flat pumps or sandals

Alémais is perfect for this. Liberty and Harvey Nick's stock Alémais so OP can check it out in person.

I’m not in the Uk but for something like this I would wear wide legged trousers, a silky cami and a blazer. Then flat leather sandals (I have a pair of Hermes Oran sandals that I always bring out for something like this)

Failing that, I would wear some kind of midi dress (maybe wrap) and a pair of wedge espadrilles.

PurBal · 16/06/2024 16:48

Shirt dress

Hard AGREE! If you've got £500 to splash, that is. One of their sundresses, with a denim jacket.

Please don't wear a plastic satin skirt.

Linen wide leg trousers and a linen waistcoat style top with wooden buttons in the same colour. Tan leather sandals. Understated jewellery. And hair- so if for work you wear your hair up and neat, let it hang loose. Or half up half down. If for work you wear little gold hoops, consider something more casual like some larger hoops or something beaded.

Bag wise- a simple tote would work.

for warmth- wear a vest. And bring a cashmere baggy sweater to layers on top.

do bit wear a blouse and blazer. Very much work wear!

or
a full skirt, with a button front and pockets with a knitted/linen mix knit type top. Massimo Dutti have nice knits.

I would wear wide leg silk trousers and matching top. Basically silk pjs. Footwear whatever you are comfortable with but no heals

So my ideal outfit would be this - linen waistcoat and wide leg trousers- however - I HATE my upper arms so no way I can do waistcoat. Plus tummy issues. BlushConfused

What about the trousers with a matching coloured knitted top- something in a loose knit.

Meadowwild · 16/06/2024 21:10

I'd wear wide-legged well cut linen trousers (not drawstring) with a longish silk or very fine jersey tunic (just covering bum), maybe belted at the waist and a fine knit long line cardigan. Flat sandals with painted toenails or ballet pumps.

Bobbybobbins · 16/06/2024 21:13

I would also go for wide legged trousers and flat sandals or pumps. Not sure about on top.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 16/06/2024 21:15

I wouldn't wear linen wide legged trousers as everyone else will be wearing them.

determinedtomakethiswork · 16/06/2024 21:24

What's your budget?

TwigTheWonderKid · 16/06/2024 21:42

What about a jumpsuit?

Whistles
Phase 8

And loads more on John Lewis website.
