Hair dye help please (roots)

Hoping the wise women on S&B can help me out again.

Years ago, I bought some mixable stuff from Sally's hair and beauty, for my mum, so she could do her roots at home.

I remember mixing a peroxide and darkest brown dye in a bowl.

I now need to do my roots! But I can't recall what we bought. It was recommended on here because even a root touch up box is too much in amount, and this way was much more economical.

I don't have a Sally's near me now.

(Or anything similar that I know of so I was looking at Amazon).

I think it was S pro peroxide? But I can't remember anything else. The colour had a number rather than a name.

Basically it's for doing roots at home but I don't need a full pack of hair colour so I'm looking for something that I can mix. It used to last mum about a year.

Can anyone help? Thank you.

If you buy any box dye, it’ll contain a bottle of dye and a bottle of developer.

You can just decant equal amounts into a separate bottle and secure the lids firmly then keep the rest for future use.

Brown box dyes come out very dark so go for the lightest shade of brown and see how you go.

Thanks you @SmileyClare

very keen to find what we had though as it lasted ages and had easy instructions- measuring by teaspoons. Mum and I are both darkest brown/black so a colour match is dead easy. The colour suggested here was a number IIRC.

Not a professional but have experimented with different hairdyes over the years...

The first number on the hairdye indicates the level (how dark/light) the colour is. So for example on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 would be black and 10 would be blonde.

The second number or letter is usually the depth/tone and depends on the brand. For example in this one https://www.sallybeauty.co.uk/hair/hair-colour-and-bleach/permanent-hair-dye/PAULMITCHELLCOLOR10.html the letters represent (N)natural, (A)sh, (G)old, (W)arm, etc. But in this one https://www.sallybeauty.co.uk/hair/hair-colour-and-bleach/permanent-hair-dye/KOLSTENPERFECT.html the other 2 numbers indicate the tones of the colour.

The hairdye is mixed with a developer which is hydrogen peroxide, though there are hairdyes without peroxide. The dye should say what developer to use to achieve desired result but usually 20 is used for a little lift and/or to cover greys.

Since you don't have a store near you to see colour samples/get advice, I would suggest looking at pictures/videos (Pinterest st/YouTube) of people who DIY and have similar hair colour to you and see what they use to get an idea. Wherever you order the dye from, don't forget to do a patch test and colour/strand test!

@PoachedScrambledBoiledFried Thank you, that's reminded what the Sally's people explained, so I can get what I need now! Thanks so much.
