Newly wavy hair- need hair brush help please!

I say newly wavy- it is becoming increasingly so as I go through menopause. I am 56 and have thick but fine just below shoulder length hair. It has always been straight as a die up until recently.
Now it has a definite wave to it and gets horribly frizzy if I brush it dry- I look like I have been electrocuted.
I can see that it wants to wave/twist. 56 years of treating it one way and now I have to learn something new.
I have heard that the Denman/ tangle teezer brushes are good to use when it has just been washed to help define the curl pattern.
Can any more experienced wavy hair ladies help this clueless woman out please. I don’t want to look like Hagrid any more!😮

When I was learning how to deal with my wavy-curly hair, I think the most useful piece of advice that anyone gave me was that natural waves/curls don’t look like the waves/curls made with heated tools so try to embrace the natural variation in your hair’s wave pattern.

Also, from experience, I’ve noticed that the more you use the correct products and styling techniques for your hair the more it will be happy sitting in its natural wave pattern and the less effort you will have to put in to achieve that.

Best of luck with your new project 👍

I agree with this. I literally only use bed head after party cream after I've washed and conditioned it. Leave it to air dry 90% then blast it off on a low heat setting to finish off. Natural waves stay in place, and are defined not frizzy. I'm actually enjoying wearing my hair down and natural 🙂

Thanks! I hope mine becomes that easy to manage on time. You have me hankering after the tigi. LOVE the smell of that stuff. Is it good for wavy hair then?

My hair is very fine and I have what I call beach waves. It's got wavier as I've got older but I've straightened it all my life and have only started to embrace it this year.

When I first started noticing it was wavy, I went all out on products for wavy hair, tried all the techniques (my god, plopping takes forever!) but realised that, actually, what works best for me is washing with my normal shampoo and conditioner, brushing bottom up with a tangle teaser once dressed while still wet straight after washing (dressed first so you're not pulling clothes over it afterwards) then scrunching and letting dry naturally. Sometimes my roots are slightly frizzy so I run my straighteners over that top bit.

Products were too heavy for my fine hair and didnt seem to add any benefit. I'd honestly see what you can achieve with no product and minimal effort first, before you invest time and money in anything else!

I find an afro comb works best

Me too, Afro combs are brilliant for no frizz 👍

It's great on mine. I have thick longish hair and the wave pattern is an 'S' so a loose beach wave. My hairdresser used it on my hair and it was so light, not sticky, that I bought it there and then to use at home. I love it. And you're right the smell is amazing 😊

@UtopiaPlanitia I would love to have some product recommendations! I look stuff up, read reviews then get completely overwhelmed and buy nothing.☹️

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you BigButtons. I think you might find this video really useful as Tori has fine hair, she gives product recommendations for the UK (both budget and otherwise) and it shows useful tips and tricks too 👍

As for personal recommendations - after trying lots of different products in the early days of learning to style my natural hair texture, I’ve settled on two brands: Jessicurl (https://jessicurluk.com) and Curlsmith (https://uk.curlsmith.com).

My hair is very coarse (with low porosity because it’s not been chemically treated) so I tend to get on best with styling products that moisturise and have only small amounts of protein. I prefer minimal-fragrance or fragrance-free: for some reason curly hair products tend to be very strongly fragranced. I also avoid silicones in my haircare because my hair doesn’t like them.

I use E45 and Nizoral daily shampoo because I like a moisturising shampoo with stronger cleansing ingredients - it prevents build up of styling products. After washing, if it’s a Jessicurl day, I condition with their Too Shea or if I’m going to use Curlsmith stylers, I use their Shine conditioner.

Jessicurl products are fantastic for my hair; very moisturising and great for rehabbing hair that has been through a lot of heat styling. I can’t say enough positive things about their deep treatment conditioner. They’re very concentrated products so a little goes a long way in application - a full-size bottle of product will last me a few months (I wash and style every 3 days.) Also, their conditioners are all multi-use and can be used for heat treatments, rinse out and leave-in.

Curlsmith are a brand with lots of product ranges targeted at specific hair needs. I like their fragrance free Shine range, although I find the strong hold gel can make my hair feel a bit producty if I use too much. I don’t find Curlsmith as moisturising but that might make them better suited to finer hair.

Both of these brands sell trial/travel sizes which is great for saving some dosh while testing things out.

I used to get on well with the Noughty range of wavy hair products but I stopped being able to tolerate the strong fragrances.

Whichever styling products I’m using, I apply them to wet hair in the shower, after I’ve washed and conditioned, and comb them through with my Tangle Teezer detangling comb. Then scrunch to ensure the product coats the hair. I plop ()  my hair in a microfibre hair wrap for about 20 minutes to help form waves and then diffuse to about 70% dry before I get bored and let my hair air dry the rest of the way. When the hair is fully dry, I scrunch out the crunch of the styling products with a few drops of coconut oil on my hands.

Hope you find this information dump helpful 😊
