Has anyone grown out a pixie cut?

I have a rather chic pixie cut - or so I like to think!

My hair is not my best feature so having it short means not having to deal with crappy thin locks and it's super practical for the gym etc.

But I have started to feel really unfeminine. It shouldn't bother me but it does.

I want to grow it but afraid it'll look a mess while I do. Anyone done this - any tips?

Regular trims and just let your hairdresser do their best to make it look decent, I'd say. Don't get hung up on it being a particular style until you've grown enough out for it to be approaching your final goal style. I'm growing out a shaggy pixie and cursing the impulse that got it in the first place!

Echobelly · 14/06/2024 18:38

I've grown out a pixie a few times (it was basically my main haircut age 7-35!) Actually had a grown out pixie when I got married - I just had it shaped around the ears and feathery at the ends so it looked quite nice as it grew, and then got it cut to a very short bob. I kept it pretty short in the immediate aftermath, but you can grow out from that.

Thanks! Good to hear I have company @Magpiecomplex :)

Yeah I might just need to go for it!

I had my pixie style trimmed today. I’d love a different style but my hair is thin, fine and flat, so not many options. I wash it, put a blob of curl jelly on, scrunch it through my hair- at least it’s easy!

Blackbeardsvest · 14/06/2024 19:27

Growing one out as we speak for exactly the same reason, have put on weight and just feel like a fat, unfeminine mess Sad Don't actually want to grow it from a practical perspective if I'm honest but it's really getting me down so here we are. Just about to book for my first 'tidy up' cut and will be trusting my hairdresser to figure out how to make the best of it til I can get it to the short bob stage, just need to decide what I'm going for longer term then as I currently have no idea!

This is exactly me. I like my hair because it's easy and tbh to me, doesn't look any worse than when I had long hair that just hung there, but no one else likes it and I'm thinking a change would be good.

DS had a short back and sides at the start of lockdown and by the end of 2 years without a haircut it was well past his shoulders, so I'm thinking it shouldn't actually take that long, but what to do with it in the meantime.

PCcrisps · 14/06/2024 19:29

I really hate a straight bob, but if your hair's straight, what's the alternative for the inbetween stage?

Tontostitis · 14/06/2024 19:29

I grew out a Sinead OConnor style skinhead with a spiky fringe. It was the eighties before you faint!. I had my head shaved or a flat top bleached white for most of my twenties and knew I didn't want to go into my thirties with it so short. My hair grows fast and I just let it grow and wore baseball caps or slicked it back with Alice bands and fake pony tails that clipped in for 18 months and just had odd trims here and there. My hair grew out in amazing condition and was past my shoulders in big thick curls by 32. Just had 8 inches chopped off as I want to get my natural hair go grey now.

Iheartmysmart · 14/06/2024 19:38

I regularly grow out a really short crop then realise my hair is ridiculously fine and just hangs limply like a pair of curtains when it gets to a certain length. Currently going through a similar stage to you and feel a longer style would be more flattering but dithering over what to do.

I tend to keep mine short around the ears and around the neck while I grow down my layers. It does look bloody awful for a while though despite my hairdresser’s best efforts.

lemmity · 14/06/2024 19:42

I've done it a few times in my youth. You just have to accept that you will have a bit of a mullet for a while and stay strong until it grows long enough for a tidy up.

JammyJellyfish · 14/06/2024 19:49

Twice - long & tedious process but keep it trimmed (about every 3/4 months) and use hair grips & claws to keep control.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 14/06/2024 20:06

"A bit of a mullet" and "it was the 80s before you faint" made me cackle!

Yeah I feel like I will grow it out and be like, eurgh, now I remember why I cut it...... but had a severe pixie for around 3y now and just bored!

Have been pondering this a lot recently.

While not a pixie cut, I am regrowing my hair after chemo. It is currently a few centimetres long/in a bit of a mohawk on top. It actually looks really good - am totally surprised how much it suits me. However, prior to chemo, I had long hair, mostly pulled off my face and tied up in a top knot. I would really love to return to that but have been worrying about 18 months, particularly the next six months of supremely bad hair.

Am planning a trim in a few months time. Will dig out alice bands once the front it long enough, and also continue to wear scarves/head wraps.

Puppylucky · 14/06/2024 20:38

Wolf cuts are your friend! Like a mullet but wispier around the back and heavy around the ears so you can tuck behind. Bad explaination - probably best to Google!

DrStrangesSmarterSister · 14/06/2024 20:50

I'm doing this at the moment - I'm sticking with regular haircuts, and my hairdresser is doing his best for me not to be driven mad by it. We're using an undercut to make it look less rubbish in the meantime.

DrStrangesSmarterSister · 14/06/2024 20:52

Very impressed with the people just taking the pain to get there more quickly!

Sonolanona · 14/06/2024 21:15

I had the pixie cut of regret at the end of August last year. I hated it instantly (I love short hair on other women but it always looks dreadful on me!)
I let it grow for 3 months and then had the mullet ends trimmed, and since then it has just grown.
I have a cut booked for 10th July as I wanted as much hair as possible to get a style cut back in... this is it currently to give you an idea of growth. It was very short last September!
(It was windy and yes I'm asking my dog for a kiss Grin)

Mine looked across between a helmet and a straw hat for a bit but it soon grows and you'll have it longer in no time. I too didn't fancy super short hair anymore having had either a pixie, pageboy or a bob all my life. I found that as I aged, it wasn't doing anything for me.

DrStrangesSmarterSister · 14/06/2024 21:39

I actually really like having a short pixie cut, so I'm feeling some uncertainty. I had it like that for 10+ years.

Gorgeous, both you and the dog!

Springwatch123 · 14/06/2024 21:52

I had pixie cut, in various shapes and sizes (very short, to more layered short hair) for twenty years until lockdown, when it grew out. Why, oh why didn’t I do it sooner!

I now have a one length hair cut and it’s so much easier to look after (apart from takes longer to dry) and I need it cutting less often. I almost feel cheated at the hairdressers now, as a hair cut is so much quicker - snip, snip, snip and it’s done.

In answer to your question, get a good cut so as it grows, it still keeps it shape. Mine went through a very short bob (french bob?) for a while.

MistressOfCopperMountain · 14/06/2024 22:04

Hi, same as you here and few other posters. Felt sassy with a short haircut for many years but the jawline is melting and I feel that it makes me look austere, rather than sassy. Plus grey hairs.

So, I have been growing out for 4 months and it’s kind of messy and annoying now, despite regular cuts. I have started taking collagen daily to give it the best chance. I try not to think too far ahead but focus on the nearest stage when it will look nice, something like this. Ironic to have all this hair despair all over again, after been a teen, I am mid forties now. Also, making effort with make up and general appearance helps, when hair is shapeless.

millymae · 14/06/2024 22:51

Lock down did me a huge favour. I let my pixie cut grow out then and stopped the colour and highlights at the same time.
Every hairdresser I’ve had has remarked upon how thick my hair is and when it was growing out it was very bushy but not too difficult to keep it looking presentable.
Had there been a hairdresser open it would probably still be short now but by the time lockdown ended the layers had all but grown out and it was easy for the hairdresser to cut it into a short bob.
It's longer than a short bob now and I’m back to my natural colour too. Everyone says they prefer my hair as it is but it takes me so long to dry that I sometimes wish it was still short.

Fraa · 15/06/2024 08:47

I grew out my pixie about 5 years ago. Same as others, had had a pixie for many years, but got older and jowly and it didn't suit any more. I like my shoulder length hair now, even though it is very fine (the reason for having a pixie in the first place).

I went with hair clips and chopping off the mullet on a regular basis during the growing out phase.

Londontown12 · 15/06/2024 09:46

I’ve done it twice !!!
first time I just left it and when it got just past jaw I cut all the back off and had a sharp bob !
2nd time round I kept trimming the back til the sides caught up I enjoyed the grow out the 2nd time round to be honest !
takes around 18 months from short pixie to jaw length Bob ! X
