Cardigans etc

I have loads of lovely summer clothes now but it's fucking freezing. Can you share some links to cardigans / cover ups and things to go with summer dresses and tops? I have a few ratty cardigans knocking around but I bought them about 20 years ago and need some nicer options.

I find the slightly boxy cropped type work well, I got some from
H&M last year and they’re great. I’ll try and find them.

GreenShady · 14/06/2024 09:11

I quite like this one although it's a bit expensive for me:

There's always the classic M&S (not cotton) - loads of colours

More long line style here?

To be fair there are millions out there 😂 I've bought a few LK Bennett cardigans on Vinted - cotton/silk, cropped sleeves.

Depends how cold it is where you are 😂

Jumbojem · 14/06/2024 09:45

I find boxy and/or chunkier knit ones look more modern, I have some fine knit ones but they do make my outfits feel more dated.
I like the H&M one linked above. My most worn cardi is an ancient natural coloured flecked cotton one as it seems to go with most summer outfits, is not bulky and sits at my waist. Longer cardigans don't look good with dresses for me.
I used to have a knitted cotton bomber jacket which was brilliant to throw over summer outfits and I'm kicking myself for not buying a similar one I saw in M&S back in Spring which has now vanished from the website.

dudsville · 14/06/2024 11:01

I agree with@Jumbojem re contemporary shapes and styles. I have some oversized cardigans both longer and cropped. The cropped ones don't feel quite as current though. I also have two thick flannel or brushed cotton over shirts that are loose, slightly swingy and work well over dresses. I also have a couple of light weight jackets that are working well. For me it's what to wear under the dresses themselves that I'm pondering!

laclochette · 14/06/2024 17:14

I love a chunky cardigan - I think they look less twee than thinner materials, and you can wear them draped off the shoulders so they almost look like you're cosied up in a blanket. It's really hard to find ones that aren't made of synthetic fabrics these days that don't also cost the earth, but I've found that eBay is a goldmine for pure wool vintage cardies - search "clwool cardigan" and set the filter to "used" and you'll find loads of really nice pieces that would be £250 or more if you got them from somewhere like J Crew. There are lots of handmade ones from the Highlands that are gorgeous.

If you find something let me know;) I am looking for goog quality/ chunky cardigan:

Recently got this one from Boden:

might be a bit childish but I haven't found anything that is better!

I bought a sort of safari jacket in lyocell to go over my summer, looks surprisingly which IMHO

I just bought the Seasalt “Vanessa” cardi in the papaya colour to wear with my dresses until the sun rocks up.

Its a really nice colour, goes v well with my green and blue toned dresses.

RosyappleA · 15/06/2024 09:24

I wear cotton cardigans from
everlane but do wait for a sale as they are expensive. Look brand new several months later. Had a nice similar one from uniqlo much cheaper though.

DailyEnergyCrisis · 15/06/2024 11:54

Just bought this from Vinted plus a couple of similar styles in different colours for this very reason.

Cardigans etc
DailyEnergyCrisis · 15/06/2024 11:59

Also there’s loads of lovely bomber jackets- nice floral or embellished ones which would look good over a midi dress or with denim midi skirt.

DailyEnergyCrisis · 15/06/2024 12:03

Just bought one of these too- there’s a few listed. Planning to wear it over a black jersey midi dress.

Cardigans etc

I bought this a couple of months ago and it gets me compliments nearly every time I wear it out and about. It's not too heavy but has enough weight to make it warm when this summer does its thing. Currently out of stock but worth keeping an eye on to see if it comes back into stock again. It looks okay in the photos but so much better in real life.

Ah love that. Shame it's out of stock.

In addition to cardigans I've been getting use out of my dresses by wearing cropped leggings underneath as an extra layer. 😆

Yes I've been doing this- leggings and a polo neck works under some dresses.

I love that Fatface cardigan in green. I'm on a 'buy no clothes until Christmas' but I'm very tempted by that.

hastalav · 16/06/2024 10:53

For over dresses I often use long sleeve shirts, some cropped, some long that I tie in a knot at the waist. Just keeps the edge off the cold depending on the fabric.

For over bottoms with t shirt etc. I like "no button" cardigans. I got one in Primark a couple of years ago in a mocha colour, still going strong and it's warm but light.

RosieChardonnay · 16/06/2024 15:20

I have the seasalt one linked here. It's lovely but not particularly warm

Toooldforthisshit49 · 23/06/2024 15:03

@AhBiscuits I like the fatface one you linked, think it would go with anything (might buy it myself 😊)

Would second the eBay raid! Would also recommend https://quernstone.co.uk/product/norna-short-jacket-lambswool-cashmere/
Whilst they are investment pieces they are natural materials, last well and are a little bit different. Also supporting a UK industry.
Bought a jumper from them last year and absolutely live in it!
Lovely friendly team as well!

Exactly this.
I particularly like the M&S ones, I wear a lot of dresses. I also have the longer length M&S one in navy and it’s so handy.
However, as others have mentioned I also use Vinted.

June-uary has turned into Feb-July-ry and so have ordered this in the Hush sale, in an effort to get more use out of my summer wardrobe.

It’s actually surprisingly neutral for a bright colour. Goes with most things and doesn’t make me feel too much like my Granny (although she was a marvellous woman, I can’t carry off her style). Makes a refreshing change from wearing hoodies.
