Hi All

i don't really wear make up and this morning I sorted through the bits I have and realised I haven't got much and the bits I have are ancient.

so if you were starting from scratch what 5 items do I need to have? A foundation? Lipstick? Mascara? Are these even things anymore? If it helps I'm an mumsy 39. I have never been in to make up but should start making an effort but low effort hehe.

If your skin is good I'd just try a tinted moisturiser and mascara and a lip gloss.

I would go with

Tinted moisturiser or a BB/CC cream (suggest Erborian for very sheer, NARS for a bit more coverage)

Mascara, I prefer non waterproof as can’t be bothered with make up remover

A tinted balm (I like Burts Bees) or a very sheer lipstick (Clinique Almost Lipstick). Or gloss if you like it but if you’re a no make up person you may hate the feeling

If your eyebrows need some help then eyebrow makeup makes a big difference- I like the NYX micro brow pencil. Skip if you have naturally full eyebrows

Some kind of soft blendable eyeliner for when you want to look a bit more dressed up - and/or you may prefer a deep coloured eyeshadow and a brush which gives more options

My essentials are: concealer (under eye and spots), matt translucent powder (shiny forehead), blusher or bronzer (colour on cheeks) , tinted lip balm and mascara. This is my no makeup look.

For a bit more, I'd add eyebrow pencil, lip pencil and lipstick. Fully made up; eyeliner and eyeshadow.

I don't really wear foundation, I have tinted moisturiser but my oily skin doesn't keep it on. I prefer a powder based foundation, I like the Laura Geller one.

So I guess I'm saying, trial and error. A lot of make up is based on your colouring and skin condition. I used to wear black eyeliner but it is too harsh with my colouring, brown works better. I'm warm toned so wear peach blusher instead of pink.

Oh gosh yes forgot concealer (NARS).

LaWench you should try the Laura Mercier oil free tinted moisturiser, great for oily skin (which I also have) her foundations are good for oily too.

  1. Light base eg eborian bb/ skin tint
  2. Brow product I have revolution micro pencil
  3. Blusher I have Chanel but want a stick
  4. Lip balm - tinted or not. I have burts bees (clear) and Clinique chubby stick (tinted)
  5. Mascara I have elf extend

I also have eyeliner as I'm a bit of a waterliner

Tinted moisturiser (nars or Fenty), concealer (nars), brows, some kind of cream blusher you can also use on lips and eyelids (glossier), and mascara. Done.

You know it's working when you start getting compliments on how lucky you are to have such great skin/brows/eyelashes.

Also skin wise it very much depends on what your skin is like naturally

I have recently acknowledged that I look a lot better with foundation rather than a BB/CC cream - but I have acne and melasma, so this won’t be the case if you have fairly even unmarked skin.

  1. foundation - coverage depends on what you are looking for. I use Lancôme Tient Idole which is buildable.
  2. An eyebrow pencil - your eyebrows can really make a difference.
  3. Some highlight.
  4. Blusher
  5. mascara

under all of this you need SPF and moisturiser
