Bikinis as approaching 50

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 10/06/2024 09:36

Can you help suggest bikinis for me.

I am 49, tall (5'9) and reasonably slim and toned (half way between a size 10 and a 12) but flat chested. I am slightly pear shaped with quite a long body and actually not especially long legs for my height.

I think I still have a few years of bikini wearing left in me but want something with a bit more coverage definitely on the bottom half.

I am happy to spend between £100 to £200 for something that really made me feel good.

Any ideas where to look?

Try Boden and/or Saint and Sofia

nameohnameohname · 10/06/2024 09:57

I make sure I have a well fitting top - by bra size. Freya and Fantasie bras for me well so I buy their bikinis too.

I hate high rise pants but the low rise sit under my belly and are not flattering, so I make sure to find the higher mid-risers! Size up in bikini bottoms so that there’s no ‘dig in’.

dementedpixie · 10/06/2024 09:59

I buy separates from belle lingerie. I like mid rise pants and bra sized tops

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 10/06/2024 10:08

Thanks will take a look. Yes it is the bottoms I find more problematic than the top to be honest...finding a good pair of midrise. I agree hate the look of high rise and low rise are just not substantial enough.

Think the mid rise one's I like are Elomi ones

Dreamingaloud · 10/06/2024 16:50

I just bought a Cupshe one that I am pleased with - lots of different shapes.

minipie · 10/06/2024 16:53

Funnily enough the best bikini I’ve tried recently was John Lewis own brand.

this style but mine is blue & white striped.

Bum fits properly, and good support. Also the top stays up even if you undo the halter strap which I like for sunbathing without strap marks.

jeaux90 · 10/06/2024 16:59

52 and I love the fold top bottoms from Boden

3awesomestars · 10/06/2024 17:02

Pour moi have great bikinis - bra sizes and different styles of bottoms.

Passmetheaero · 10/06/2024 17:27

I’ve just bought separates from Victoria Secrets - bottoms were £29 and top was a little more

£100-200 for two tiny bits of cloth?

Everyone has different budgets....if I found something cheaper that I felt a million dollars in I would spend less, but I am prepared to spend a bit on something I feel good in.

She didn't say she wanted to look younger in it.

Mojitowithice · 10/06/2024 20:27

I’m similar shape to you and really rate Heidi Klein bikinis. I tend to buy them from Brand Alley .

astarsheis · 10/06/2024 21:01

Seafolly do some mix and match bikinis and I also like pour moi.

erinaceus · 10/06/2024 21:05

If I had that budget I’d shop here, I love their collection.

GinJarRogers · 10/06/2024 21:47

I am EXACTLY your height, size and body shape and love the Boden Arezzo bikini. I’ve just bought my second one as it’s so comfortable and flattering.

mitogoshi · 10/06/2024 22:03

Mine are fantasie, pour moi and joe browns. All bought as separates bra sized. I have a couple of pairs of bottoms for each top plus a modibodi period bottoms too. Everything can mix and match if needed as similar palate. Size up on the bottoms if needed as the skimpy are not flattering even on youngsters ( the thong type look particularly ridiculous imho)

Thistooshallpass. · 10/06/2024 22:15

I'm very near 50 .. got 2 new ones recently . M and S.
Really nicely structured, briefs not skimpy but not too big ( I think the bigger they are the bigger your behind looks ) - but you feel secure , comfortable and they have some plain or patterned designs .

Shuttheblinds · 10/06/2024 23:27

I am tall too and similar age. I have bought a few from Freya this year, the tops are in bra sizes and they often do 2-3 different style of bottoms. The higher rise bikini bottoms are really popular this year. Usually around £70 ish for bikinis.

Obi73 · 11/06/2024 04:47

Seafolly & M&Sdo great beachwear

LightDrizzle · 11/06/2024 08:49

Freya are great but quite expensive. I’m a different shape to you though, a somewhat out of control hourglass.

I’m over 50 and currently flabby. I wear a bikini because I find it more comfortable. I live on the continent and I really like the fact that you see all sorts of bodies and ages on the beach in bikinis (and swimsuits). I think it’s good for children and adolescents of both sexes to see people of all ages and sizes comfortable in their skin; taking up space on the beach or by the pool and enjoying the water and the sun. It’s a small antidote to the bombardment of messages they get that if they don’t look like Kyle Jenner they’d be better off either dead or spending £££ on mostly ineffective shit to get them closer. Nobody gives a second glance here, it feels very healthy. I expect I’ll be in a bikini into my 80s if I’m fortunate enough to live that long.

It’s lovely to be in possession of long lithe limbs, toned abs and youth, but even if we are blessed with them the latter passes quickly. I had a mum who was very invested in looks, I can’t blame her as she learned young how much society valued her looks, but she just hated aging. I think girls and women are still surrounded by messages that make our happiness too dependent on how we look, whereas until recently, men’s happiness was determined by what they are looking at or doing.

Sorry! Went off on a bit of a tangent there but please don’t feel there’s an upper age or weight limit beyond which it would be indecorous to wear a bikini.
