Summer coat for living in scotland - help!!

Ok so I need a coat to see me through summer BUT I live in scotland so it’s needs to be at least slightly warm (not some aspirational floaty linen thing). I do NOT want an anorak - this needs to be a coat I can wear to work but it doesn’t have to be very formal. I cycle to work so it also needs to be no longer than hip length. (I do have a cycle jacket, but I need something that can also be worn when I’m going out to meetings so it can’t be a neon- yellow cycle jacket). Also - as noted above - I’m not a fan of anything remotely anorak.

does such a thing exist? Or am I asking for the moon? I’m 50 and aspire towards Cos /jigsaw / whistles style dressing. Not that I reallly have a style. Budget is anything really.

at the moment I’m wearing a grim anorak and I hate it so much.

I’ve seen so many brilliant suggestions on this board from stylish women who recommend places I didn’t even know existed so I’m hoping one of you can come up with a spark of genius!

thank you so much.

I'm also in Scotland and have the same issue of summer never really getting going! I'm looking into a quilted/kimono style jacket. There are a few nice ones about in shops. This one is off Ebay

I'm in Scotland. I have a couple of summer coats from Oska Ischiko from previous years. They are similar to these. One is waterproof, 1 isn't.

Oska rainproof

Oska jacket

I also have this dress which I wear as a coat.

Palava linen coat dress.

I also have a long, navy cotton drill coat from Cabbages and Roses but you couldn't cycle wearing it

I think either of these would work.

Cabbages and Roses

Cabbages and Roses Frances jacket

If you want cycling specific coats I can recommend Georgia in Dublin . We have a similarly damp climate over here.

PragmaticDramatic · 09/06/2024 13:04

What about a Barbour quilted jacket?

grassyknees · 09/06/2024 14:21

Or this heavier duster coat from Benetton:

Thank you so much - these are exactly the kind of ideas I was hoping for. Will check them out properly tonight although I think I am actually in love with the Georgia in Dublin range - thanks @TheLongRider 😊

I think you need at least 3, sorry!

I have:

  • proper waterproof
  • medium warm utility jacket
  • lightweight smart coat for work.

Agreed. On top of the ones I listed I have 2 proper Macintoshs as well.

I’m in Scotland and in the summer if I needed a jacket I’d generally wear my Barbour (if I thought it might rain), a quilted jacket from Free People or a bomber jacket (if I needed something with a bit of warmth but not expecting rain).

Similar to these:

What on earth were Barbour thinking of 😳

Oh and a couple of light tweed single breasted just below knee length coats as well. The nearest to one coat does all is my Oska water repellent coat.

Are you just here to shite on folk?

Cable1905 · 09/06/2024 21:37

For cycling look at Vulpine clothing. They do a waterproof thigh length jacket which looks smart and nothing like bike wear.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 09/06/2024 22:03

I don’t cycle but do walk everywhere (NE Scotland) including 30 minutes each way to work. I have several different jackets I wear at this time of year, plus a very sturdy umbrella (obviously no use for cycling) and always carry a beanie hat I can shove on. I go between leather jackets (an oversized biker from H&M, and the Whistles clean-bonded one), quilted jackets (a dark green one from Hush, and a beige one from Cos), and denim jackets (blue Kickers and grey-black Levi’s, both oversized). I always see influencers/magazines talking about a trench being a spring essential but rarely see anyone in one here.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 09/06/2024 22:06

My main summer coat is a barbour waxed one with a nice lining - there have been liberty ones that look good imo.
You need to keep them waxed if you want them to be showerproof but I love mine. I have a dark blue one that I think looks a bit smarter.
