I have an event coming up.
I never usually leave the house.
Some days I don't get dressed or brush my hair (lots of diagnosis).

I need to feel better about myself
Have confidence
Lose weight
Hair / Skin need help
I don't have going out clothes

Now miracles can't happen but what can I do to TRY and look a little better in 4 weeks thanks.

Title should say look "better" I guess!!

This seems quite ambitious, so don't put too much pressure on yourself. Go outside for an hour's walk every day (or at least 5 days a week if that's too much). Drink more water. Cut down on sugar. Can you book a hair appointment? What sort of skin do you have, what needs sorted (e.g. is it dry, spots, wrinkles?).

MrsDTucker · 09/06/2024 09:33

I have those horrible dark spots. I've been using factor 50 on my face every day for 3 weeks.

What other foods can I cut out?

Thanks.

Also what foods can I eat to keep me full / snack with?

Protein. Eggs,, chicken etc. Try fasting. If you want to get rid of brown spots get laser or a peel. Get your eyebrows tinted and threaded. A good haircut.

DogwoodTree · 09/06/2024 09:42

No booze
sort eyebrows professionally
haircut
neaten up nails
eat lots of vegetables and pulses

ClemFandangooo · 09/06/2024 09:59

Hair cut, maybe balayage or highlights if you have £, get your nails done (acrylic if needed), eyebrows shaped and tinted, Dove/Nivea gradual tan moisturizer

Daily walks listening to music or a podcast if you can

stardust777 · 09/06/2024 10:03

Beautywise
Professional eyebrow shape
Hairdressers
Teeth whitening
Book a free personal styling session with John Lewis to get a new outfit

Healthwise
Up your water intake
1 smoothie per day (I usually use spinach and carrots, or cucumber and carrots as a base and then add frozen berries)
1 yoga with Adriene (or any other youtube yogi) session per day

IWillBeWaxingAnOwl · 09/06/2024 10:15

What is the budget?

Appointments
Haircut and colour if needed
Gel nails
Eyelashes - can think about subtle extensions or dyed and permed
Eyebrows - again can think about just groomed Vs dyed
Hair removal if needed eg underarms
Teeth whitening

Health
Drink 2L water a day
Get the best sleep you can - check in on your sleep hygiene and early to bed.
More walking if you are able.

Style
I also recommend the John Lewis service - they got my mum a lovely mother of the bride outfit that really suited her figure and sense of style.

Questions before we say more:
Do you exercise already?
What kind of event?
What kind of diet do you have at the moment?
What approximate age are you?
What kind of shape do you have presently?

When you say you don’t usually leave the house - did you mean you sunbathe in your garden?

More generally:

Getting outside as much as possible, beyond your home, will improve your physical and mental wellbeing.

Do you get much opportunity to speak to a range of people - including strangers? You can do anything you want to alter / improve your appearance but in order to enjoy the event you’re attending you need to feel at ease in a social situation. The worst thing about being confined to home is how painfully self conscious one can feel when you do eventually go out. So it would be a good idea to create ways to interact with strangers and groups over the next few weeks, so it’s less of a strain on the day.

You really don’t need fake tan or fake nails - though you can get them if you like. In social situations people need to look clean and tidy, smell fresh and show an interest in the people they meet.

Dentists are expensive but if you can afford a visit this might be money well spent if needed.

Get a weekly veg box with probably three times the amount of fruit and vegetables you may usually consume. (Obviously if this is something you do already, that’s great.)

Avocados, carrots, fresh turmeric and salmon may make the biggest difference to your appearance in the shortest time if consumed regularly. Eat things in as close to their natural state as possible - you don’t need complicated recipes.

Oh! Order some enormous bags of magnesium salts (not dainty little jars) and throw several handfuls into a bath a few times a week. Miraculous effect on skin and great relaxation properties.

Just to add to what has been mentioned if weight is something you are concerned with then Id invest in some decent shapewear.
Long term diet and exercise but you wont see a difference in just 4 weeks!😉

Superstoria · 09/06/2024 10:45

Four weeks? I reckon:

Strict low carb or shakes
Shedloads of water
Start painting your nails daily with strengthener today

Then a couple of days before:
Fake tan
Hair cut and / colour
Possibly lashes

The first 4 weeks of starting to lose weight are usually the most productive. It’s not unusual to lose 10-14 lbs in that first month and drop a dress size. After that it tends to slow down dramatically to 4-7lbs a month in my experience.

@MrsDTucker if you can find an old copy of Monica Grenfell’s Fabulous in a Fortnight, she sets out a whole programme of beauty treatments - hair masks, facials, manicures etc over a 2 weeks period all of which can be done at home using products bought from the supermarket and a gentle exercise regime which needs no equipment to start to address some wobbly bits! You could easily rip through this twice and be match fit for your event.

edited to add Amazon link where it’s still available

Thank you so much everyone.

I don't have a budget. As in zero money. So I'll have to make do.

I appreciate it thanks.

Perhaps that information might have been better in your first post, @MrsDTucker? Then people would have restricted their advice to things that cost little, if any money.

But really, if you can tweak your diet, and get outside every day, exfoliate in the shower and use moisturiser / oil on your body, cleanse your face and apply any gentle oil (available in the food aisles of any supermarket) you’ll make progress.

If you don’t already take a Vitamin D supplement that would be a sensible investment of money saved on snacks and sugar.

4 weeks of yoga - use a towel on the floor if you can’t afford a yoga mat - will make a big difference to flexibility, posture and confidence.

Could you find a friend or relative to do your hair?

PoachedScrambledBoiledFried · 09/06/2024 13:31

A lot of good advice already but I think you should focus on "feeling" good/better rather than "looking" good/better, especially in 4 weeks and with zero budget. Eating well, staying hydrated, getting outside for some fresh air and movement, exercising at home (at whatever capacity), can all be done with little time and no extra cost. The knock on effect is that you will feel better, hair/skin may improve on its own (depending on what the issues are), and with consistency weight loss will happen. This will all build your confidence.

Of course this is all assuming there isn't other issues at play but healthier changes (whatever you can do) are always better.

MrsDTucker · 11/06/2024 13:25

Thank you this has helped

Lentilweaver · 11/06/2024 13:31

Vinted for the clothes? Or borrow from a friend?

MetaDaughter · 12/06/2024 09:26

How are you getting on, @MrsDTucker?

Have you managed to get outside for a walk? Brushed your hair? Or found an easy yoga routine on instagram or YouTube? I know it can be very hard to do anything at times when one feels beset with challenges - but a specific goal, like your event, can be motivating.
