Recommendations for keratosis pilaris please

Hello all,

My son (4) has keratosis pilaris - those raised bumps on his upper arms. The GP said it's permanent and there's not much to be done about it. The internet suggests that exfoliation and moisturiser can help. Does anyone have any recommendations for products I could try?

Thank you in advance.

Not sure I'd worry about it in a four year old as it's completely harmless and I'd guess he doesn't care about it. But Ameliorate Transforming Body Lotion does/did the job for me.

Cerave products. Completely cleared up my KP, I use the soap style bar in place of shower gel and their moisturiser.

Similar to @RollaCola84, I've found switching from shower gel to soap has significantly improved mine. I made the switch for environmental reasons so was very pleased by this unintended consequence.

I use The Little Soap company who are stocked in Boots, Sainsburys etc but I'm not sure the brand is overly relevant, it's more that it's proper soap.

Aveeno deep moisturiser (the navy lid) is good but not as effective as a long term switch to soap IME.

The inkeylist have just bought out a stick that they reckon can help with KP. It’s basically a moisturiser in a stick but might be easier than a lotion!
ameliorate seems to work the best on mine but nothing has got rid of it completely

Ameliorate is the best known and gold standard high street range. I got it for DD when she was about 12 (she's 21 now) and she swears by it.
Lots of ranges around now though- the ingredient you're after is lactic acid.

Thanks very much all - this is really helpful. I appreciate that my son doesn't even know it's there but I'd like to get on top of it now. The tip about lactic acid is great as I can start checking ingredients lists!

Do you live in a hard water area? I only developed KP after moving to the UK. What I’ve found is a acidic PH toner first to neutralise the alkaline in the hard water, then I use the ameliorate cream. But I think really important to toner away the hard water residue first. Salicylic acid and glycolic acid wipes help as well.

Definitely change from shower gel to soap - I had KP on my arms and exfoliate regularly but the greatest improvement came from switching from shower gel to soap. I use Dove but sometimes use posher soaps as a treat. I think it must be the ingredient that makes shower gels ‘bubble’ that damages the skin. Changing to soap also cured the KP on my DD’s and DS’s skin.

I've moved to using all Cerave skin care products in the last six months but I ditched shower gel and other liquid soap for bar soap years ago, I also use a shampoo and conditioner that doesn't contain the foaming ingredients and that's made so much difference to my skin.

We've been conditioned for years that the foam means it's cleaning but it isn't.
