Has anyone got/had an undercut?

I've thought about it for years, partly because I have mega thick hair, never grow it past my shoulders and never do anything with it. However it just feels a bit bold and also I have a pretty hairy face which though I do get threaded monthly, I can't always keep on top of every hair and I feel like I'd be super self conscious about that without hair growing down the sides of my faces to hide it. But then the feminist in me thinks who cares really, I can't help that I have dark, thick, fast growing hair!

Anyway if you have or had one, how do you/did you find it? Would you recommend it?

Yes! I got one a couple of months ago and I absolutely love it. It makes it easier to manage and it looks great when I pin it up. It's nice and cool, and do much quicker to wash and dry. I have had it clippered once since I got it done, and plan on keeping it for now. I will probably get my hair cut short when I'm fed up with it.

Is it low maintenance you’re seeking? Then don’t get an undercut with fast growing hair. I have fast growing thick hair and a lot. I didn’t have an undercut but a pixie with a shaved back, it’s amazing for a week, so lightweight, I slept comfortably, my head didn’t get hot. And then, similar to men, looks messy and untidy after a week of regrowth. It also gets itchy with the regrowth, I guess cos the hair is very thick. I didn’t want to commit to weekly or even fortnightly haircuts. So a week it’s great and then after overall it’s worse.

Forgetting the maintenance, I loved it, my husband thought it looked great, very trendy and I got a lot of compliments. However I do look like my dad, so if I was wearing glasses and no jewellery or makeup I’d look more boyish but I didn’t mind this and all I did was a bit of eyeliner if I had a day feeling self conscious or something.

Sorry shaved was the wrong word, “clippered” is a better description thanks @FoFanta

WhyamInotvomiting · 07/06/2024 09:48

Thanks both, do you have any photos you could share of the styles? Not of yourself but anything similar on the web? Just struggling to picture them.

The maintenance is a good point, I'm lazy and I don't think any of the very local salons would be thrilled about those types of hairstyles either so I was looking at some in town but it would be a hassle to go regularly.

Not too bothered about it looking a bit messy though as my longer hair probably looks messy anyway a lot of the time. Also not remotely bothered about looking more masculine. I wear glasses and hardly ever wear makeup anyway.

Pixie cut another option but again feel self-conscious about the sides of my face whereas undercut I could have a top layer longer or at least on one side or something so would be able to hide a bit behind that.

Have a look through the Bluetit account, they do a lot of alternative styles and have lots of photos of people smashing it. Something like a mod cut or modern mullet would fit what you’re seeking but they are both a lot of styling effort.

But it sounds like you’re being guided by wanting to hide something rather than an overall look you’re aiming for? Maybe a session in a hairdresser that does the sort of look you like and they can recommend what will suit you and meet your needs - like mine are I won’t style it all the time and I won’t come for a haircut every 12 weeks! My haircut is shoulder length and thinned out with scissors to take a lot of the weight out, the amount of hair on the floor after they take it out thinning, it looks like I’ve had a major haircut. It dries quick and sits nicely. I put leave in conditioner in it after washing so it looks tame.

I have one at the back of my head, under my very, very thick hair. You'd never know it was there unless my hair was up. My hairdresser did it for me but my husband keeps it in order once a month for me with an electric razor.

I have never regretted it for a second. I no longer get hairs tangled in my necklaces, it's much cooler on sunny days, it's slightly faster to dry/style my hair too.

Mine would be a bit like this:

I do! I have a number two round the sides and back. I love it! I've had an undercut for pretty much all of my adult life with varying amounts of length on top due to having very thick hair. Currently I have pink and black wool dread extensions in.

Has anyone got/had an undercut?

I also have one just at the back so you wouldn't know it was there unless I put it up. My hairdresser always forgets it's there when I see her as my hair is so thick! It really does make a difference, my hair sits much nicer at the back, it's not as hot and when I do put my hair up it looks good.

I've also got my DH to clipper it for me before, but tbh I don't put my hair up often unless I'm exercising so I usually just leave it as you can't see it's longer under my hair.

TheVeryAngryCaterpillar · 07/06/2024 10:37

I had one under a short bob and loved it but was never very good at styling it.

During lockdown my DH had to maintain it with clippers but managed to unintentionally go a bit higher every time until it was pretty much a mohican at which point I gave up and grew it out!
Took ages and left me with some very uncool stages in between. If I did it again I'd have one like @LolaJ87

RazorstormUnicorn · 07/06/2024 11:24

I have very thick hair and got one two years ago. I loved it and thought the slightly alternative looks suited me.

Unfortunately I found that a succession of barbers couldn't properly clip it, and they used to take nicks out of my hair and I had less abs less hair left as a result.

Then my husband decided he wanted an undercut and it was the last straw and I am growing it out. It's nearly there. I got my hair cut to shoulder length so it has less to 'catch up' too. In all in will have taken a year to grow out.

I'd only recommend if you are going to stick with it for some time. I guess I don't regret it, I had been toying with the idea for nearly a decade so I was always going to do it sooner or later. Lesson learned. Find a husband who doesn't copy 🤣 (he bought the same sunglasses as me too!)

Sonolanona · 07/06/2024 16:53

I had one and it felt fab... but was a pain when I wanted to grow it out as it goes through a messy, can't do anything with it , stage!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 07/06/2024 16:59

I made DP clipper one in when I was being driven insane by Psoriasis. Instant blissful relief and the ability to get steroids where they were needed instead of travelling down my hair. Nobody ever noticed unless I tied my hair up (and I switched to full face wax instead of threading, so no danger of a big wiry hair being missed).

goodnessidontknow · 07/06/2024 17:25

I have a nape undercut and love it. As pp have said if my hair is loose or tied low it's not visible but it has made managing my thick hair so much easier. I have a number 2 clip done about every 6 or 8 weeks and find that's enough although it does get a bit untidy in the last week or 2.

TheYoungestSibling · 07/06/2024 17:47

I had it cut across from ear to ear last summer. You can't see it when my hair is down and it felt amazing. Will definitely do it again.

It was clippered short rather than shaved so it was still dark to look at and hid regrowth.
