Starting the search for winter coat

I’m overseas and visiting the U.K. in July. I want to get a decent winter coat for dog walking, kids sports games - sick of being cold or wearing DH’s old coat.

Help? Needs to be something I can clean somehow with the dog factor. Have a decent budget but I want it to last years.

Also what trousers are good for keeping warm? I see women in gym leggings in the freezing cold and I don’t get it?!

You know its not winter here in July? I mean, it's colder than usual right now but all you need is a rain mac. Try Regatta.

CaptainBarnacleButt · 07/06/2024 09:34

I think OP means they want to buy something while they're visiting the UK, to take back home?

If that's the case, there won't be huge ranges of coats in the 'generic' shops in July, but if you head for places like Mountain Warehouse, Regatta etc you should find something. More practical than stylish though!

Matches have some bargains. Though they are in administration, I've had no issues with receiving orders. I'm not sure if they offer refunds, though. I just bought a Joseph coat for 50% off.

Yeah agree outdoor shops are a good shout. I have a Rab jacket and it's good. Mine is quite lightweight due to mildish wet climate year-round, but you can get a down one, e.g. this. Washing instructions here.

For trousers, I do tend to just wear thick cotton leggings for dog walking and change when I get home, but I got Acai thermal trousers recently and they're excellent, not too hot even when it's 12 degrees-ish. Here. Size up. I suppose it depends what you're used to, if it gets very hot where you live you might feel the cold more than me.

Correct, I’m aware july is not winter in the U.K. 😜

Those thermal trouser sounds just the ticket. Thank you

Will be hard to find winter coats in the UK shops right now. More chance online especially the sale sections. I’d try places like Mountain Warehouse and Superdry.

I have Acai thermal trousers and they are decently rain resistant also.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/06/2024 19:28

Look at Didrikson's. They are usually stocked by Cotswold Outdoor and Go Outdoors during the autumn and winter, but are online all year. Excellent quality and warmth (albeit at a price).

I was also going to recommend those Acai thermal trousers.

henlake7 · 07/06/2024 19:40

I think Regatta is pretty good for waterproof coats.

Also I live in leggings in the winter. Primark do awesome fur lined ones that are very cosy.
Lots of places do thermal lined ones too.

gardenmusic · 07/06/2024 20:26

OP are you able to do on line shopping while you are here?
I like Craghopper for warmth and waterproof - ness, classic rather than fashionable.
Landsend, too.
July is actually a very good time to buy, you can get some absolute bargains.
My last 2 Craghoppers were bought at 50% off in July.

That’s helpful thank you! I am but do like to be able to try stuff on too

Aah, might be a bit more difficult then.
Garden Centres often have an outdoors section.

If you are able to shop online whilst you're here, you might get a bargain eg https://www.hellyhansen.com/en_gb/women/jackets/winter-jackets?p=2

I found this at John Lewis & Partners. What do you think? https://www.johnlewis.com/ted-baker-aliciee-longline-hooded-padded-coat-black/p109200299?tmad=c&tmcampid=7&sshare=jlappioss_Y29tLmFwcGxlLlVJS2l0LmFjdGl2aXR5LkNvcHlUb1Bhc3RlYm9hcmQ=

Love the Helly glacier. I do not need it. I love the grape colour, and it is a 600 fill.
It packs up small for travelling.

Great suggestions thank you! I was thinking I’d Barbour - just in terms of longevity - is it still a decent brand? Feel so out of touch with this stuff

OP posts:
gardenmusic · 08/06/2024 20:48

Very decent, but cut a little small

rubyroola · 11/06/2024 02:00

Perfect thank you!
